"How."

Where is David Bowie?
Could I choose more than 5, I would probably add:

Nick Cave
Tom Waits
The White Stripes

Wow. The Thread That Wouldn't Die. I like that :-)

If I could count (ahem...), I'd list all the bands named in this thread and try to establish what the Pixies fans' fav bands are.

I'm quite surprised at how many mentions The Smiths get. Goes to show how eclectic Pixies fans are :-) Maybe it's a generation thing. (FYI, The Smiths would've been on my list too, had it been longer than 5 names.)

I'm also a bit surprised to see that I was the only one to mention Throwing Muses. I understand they're not everyone's taste, and I don't say you should like them (I do say you should listen to them if you haven't, though), but they were linked to the Pixies back in the day, and I would've expected more common fans.

I really think I should compile a big list of "bands I should give a listen to" from this thread. I never ever listen to the radio (got sick of being exposed to crappy "music"), so the Internet --especially recommendations from people who listen to the same stuff as me-- and in-store booths thingies are the only ways I have to discover new music. Oh yeah, and filesharing too :-)

Keep 'em coming!

My dear Edwina, you clearly must have seen some of my other postings as Mr Bowie would indeed have been at the top of my top 5 bands lists (well actually he would have been second from the bottom it being in reverse-alphabetical order and all that) but i didn't think i was allowed solo artists!

Dear Scarla 'O
Well, it's true, the original question was 'the 5 favourite bands apart from Pixies', but then a lot of people mentioned more than 5 bands; others named Pixies themselves and many other people solo artists, so I think you could get away with adding David Bowie... and who would you kick out then?
As for the bands named in this thread (a very interesting one) They Might Be Giant seem to appear very often.
Operation Ivy get mentioned as well, which really surprises me...

I guess i'd kick out the droogishly named 'Moloko'...and drag Davy B into the frame (metaphorically speaking). Regarding whether you're allowed to include the Pixies in the list or not...hmmm...you know it's fair to say you have a point, but then i'd have to kick out the Sonics and we wouldn't want to do that now would we?

I've heard that 'They Might Be Giants' are a great band to see live and also that they played at the Barbican on Saturday.

No no hold on... Pixies should NOT be included in the list, as the whole point of this thread is to estabilish what bands Pixies' fans are into.

And no, we wouldn't want to kick out Sonic Youth! God forbid.
If we have to kick out someone, then let it be Roxy Music. Though I'm under the impression that if you are allowed to include solo singers, then your list will change pretty radically... won't it?

I guess my top five non-Pixies-or-Frank bands would be:

1. They Might Be Giants (I doubt I ever would have gotten into Frank or the Pixies if I hadn't been into them first)
2. XTC
3. Young Fresh Fellows/Minus Five
4. Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker
5. Weird Al (the first artist I was ever really into)

Audioslave...well I cant really stand them...
I love rage...and i love soundgarden...
but some things just dont mix well together
i mean... i find cornells' vocals...kinda like a dying cat over rage's funkdafied tunes...
i tried to get into them... but i just couldn't
and their on EVERY DAMN CHANNEL!
i was listening to the radio in the car yesterday(god forbid)
and it was on three different stations...
now there is no need for that.
what about you?

Yeah, i tried getting into to Audioslave (considering Soundgarden are one of my favorite bands of all time, and Rage were pretty kickass also), but it just never happened. I have been constantly underwhelmed every time I hear em. Maybe it would have worked better if it wasn't just a straight-up combination of Rage rhythm section/guitar and Cornell banshee-wailing. They exemplify a "supergroup" (as the media likes to call them) that isn't nearly as good as the two preceding bands.
