I'm 20 and they're very relevant to me. They were one of the first bands I ever got into, without them I might never have heard of Frank Black. If you guys went to a Sonic Youth message board and all the sonic youth board members started trashing on Frank's solo stuff you'd be fighting them off just like the Sonic Youth fans are fighting you off on this message board. Face it, no matter how many times you say "wait, they're call sonic youth and they're over 40?" and "they play feedback, that's so pretentious!" it's not going to change our minds. |

How can a rock band comprised of human beings be called the Pixies? I like this quote by Mark Prindle: "Sonic Youth is the greatest band in the world. And they fucking suck." |

well i love sonic youth and i think that it is odd that the pixies and sonic youth came around at about the same time with similar styles. maybe frank resents them a little. and murray street is amazing and is NOT like every other youth cd ever made. deffinately an amazing band. |

I agree that Murray Street is an excellent album...nycg&f was excellent as well. I just have to mention that SY started around 81 and the Pixies started in 86. |

murray street is good but 1000 leaves is my favouraite sonic youth album of recent years. Sonic youth were around way before the pixies and i don't really think the styles were similar. Sonic youth certainly seem alot more serious( or pretentious, depending on whether you like them or not) than the pixies, frank or the breeders and i think any jealously on the part of frank may be due to the recognition that sonic youth recieve. i don't really think that frank is jealous though. |

okay you will have to forgive me. i was born in '87 so i think i am doing pretty good for at least knowing that they are in the same decade. somewhere in the middle i think SY resembled pixies more than they did in the beginning and now. they started out trying to make as many tones with their cheap instruments and etc. and have gone to their brilliantly mellodic new stuff. i guess i dont think that frank is jealous so much as may see them as a nuicense in some ways b/c fans seem to be mutual. or maybe he really just doesnt like their music, but come on its not THAT big of a stretch. |

Honestly, I don't really see Frank being jealous of any other artist, it just doesn't fit with him. |

SY lick balls live now. I saw em' 3 times in the past 3 years and the whole time I was fuckin' bored out of my fuckin' mind.
Yes, the have some good CDs, so does Billy Corgan. But fuck that shit. You gots to rip it up live. And fuck a Sonic Youth that fuckin' drone out their audiences consisting mostly of weird ass freaks who stand around at a show and don't move and are like, "That was cool Butthead." "Yeah, it was." Fuck that.
Just kiddin' Sonic Youth, you aight.

We're on season 14 at the moment. :) But season 6 is the best season of the Simpsons - all the classics come from there. The show started being good around season 3, season 5 was really the first REALLY good season, and 6 was the peak. 7-9 are really good as well, though things start to go downhill slowly as 10 & 11 (still with many great episodes) have a few real bombs. Season 12 & 13 are probably the weakest in the show's history, though 14 has been quite a bit better. Maybe we're on the way up to a new peak. Check out www.snpp.com for episode names, then go and download them from Kazaa if you don't get them. |

The weird thing about Sonic Youth is that have been on a major label all these years and have continued to produce "strange" or "weird" music, and they seemingly have had little trouble with their label. Nowadays, a band has dissapointing sales and they're dropped like a tonne of bricks. Sonic Youth has been putting out challening music for (more than?) 20 years and they just keep playing. I'm not a huge Sonic Youth, in fact I only have "Dirty", which is generally regarded to not be their strongest record, but I find it interesting that major labels spew out a constant stream of crap and do nothing to encourage original, interesting or just plain good music, and here we have SY quietly making albums for a major all these years. I think I had a point in there somewhere, but it has escaped me. I'm going down in flames. |

That is an interesting point. I guess Sonic Youth's longetivity in the music biz could largely be credited to a VERY dedicated core of fans; the band doesn't sell "a lot", but sells consistently. I generally regard Dirty to be SY's weakest record. It'd probably be considered a classic if most of the second half was left off. |

Speaking of The Simpsons, season 4 is where all the good episodes come from. Season 8 is when it started to suck ass. |

Alright, we should probably start a separate Simpsons thread, but since Jim himself is posting this here, what the hell...
Season 8 sucks?!?! You mean classic episodes like You Only Move Twice (Bond parody), Bart After Dark (Maison Derrierre, the burlesque house), Homer's Enemy (Frank Grimes), El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Homer (The one where Homer eats that crazy chili pepper), Homer vs. The 18th Ammendment (Prohibition hits Springfield), ... (15 minutes later), ... Homer's Phobia (Homer is worried Bart may be gay), ...
Anyway, the list goes on, but those are some amazing episodes. Not as much as say season 6, but still good. There are many greats from 4 as well, for the record, but I think that 6 is the flawless season where there is not one bad episode, all the animation and voices are finally right, and the sex appeal of Marge is through the roof. Well, maybe not that last bit, but... |

i'm kind of the opposite. i used to like their albums (like, when i was in High School and beyond that a bit) but then they started getting boring to me and i lost interest..
but i recently saw them in Los Angeles and they rocked so fucking hard, it made me consider buying some of the recent albums i've been skipping over. this is only based on one show, but it was a pretty amazing show. my ears are still ringing.. |

Again, jumping on the Simpsons thing...they had a short dry spout around seasons 10-11 I think where they just made Homer unbelievably stupid...then they got a second wind when they started introducing non-sequitor humor (shows start off one place, completely change directions, lots of bizarre one-off jokes, ext) |

I always thought it striking how many similarites there were between the Pixies and Sonic Youth, like:
-Both groups were AMAZING (& at the top of my ultimate list of artists) -Both started in the 80's -Both bands influenced so many other sweet bands -Both were willing to step outside the box while keeping one foot inside (they were fresh and experimental but familiar enough so the listener would not be totally lost) -Both had psychotic lead singer dudes with weird names, Thurston Moore and Black Francis/Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IVth -Both had bassists named Kim -Both had immigrant lead guitarists with amazing proficiency -Each member of both groups went off to do solo or side projects
It puzzles me the two didn't become sister groups or something back in the day. I know Charles,Dave and Joey probably thought SY were cool and respected them. Kim,however, seems to be the one member coming out of the Pixies to have a really close link. Apparently she really admires SY and even did guest vox on one of their tracks 'Little Trouble Girl.' |

Sonic Youth Rock. The only album that I do not like is Washing Machine - it is so boring. Murray street is an amazing album. NYC G&F took some getting used to, but I love it now. I was once like many of the people here. I thought that SY sucked. The truth is, I didn't understand what they were doing with their music and I didn't want to understand. I am not so closed minded now. It took listening to Sister - the best album ever, after Frank Black * Frank Black - to make me realize what an amazing and innovative band they truely are. But, all who agree must have figured out by watching music video channels or listening to the radio, that people don't want innovative , they want the same shit fed to them over and over. I have a question about THe Year Punk Broke. Near the end, Thurston is talking about the tour, and he says something about some Black Frances action. Why is there no Black Frances action in the documentary? |

Yeah!!! I was watching 'The Year Punk Broke' again a month or two ago, and I realized that the last time I had seen it I had no IDEA who Black Francis was, so that reference went completely over my head.
Why didn't they include Frank Black live stuff on it?????? Good question. Precisely what I asked myself. |

Yeah! it's like....lemme get this straight. You included that completely crappy noise-jam that was Gumball....and the horrid-quality Ramones song footage....but not a SINGLE Pixies performance. For shame. |
