Well, Kim Deal loves Sonic Youth. I remember two references Frank has made to them (both in his Pixies days). One time he mentioned how the Monkey Gone to Heaven video wasn't played on some show by "the guy from sonic youth" because Joey gave a thumbs up in the video. And another time he talked about how he has a place in his head for every beatles song, then as an example, said he didn't have a place in his head for any Sonic Youth songs.
On both occasions he doesn't really say whether or not he likes them, but it's pretty clear at least he's not a hardcore fan. I'll bet nowadays he'd say "i respect them, they do their own thing" |

Granted, they've essentially been making the same record for twenty years, but I thought Murray Street was at least the most to the point they've been in ages.
At least the thing they do is their own. It seems that everything is something else. The Strokes ("Goodbye Toulouse" by the Stranglers), The Hives (every garage band of the last twenty years that no one cared about), The White Stripes (umm...Zeppelin crossbred with Stooges)....I could go on, but I won't.
Speaking of, anyone heard about this Stooges reunion? |

I actually heard about it months ago, but was told to keep my mouth shut because Iggy Pop wanted to make sure their new songs didn't suck before he announced it |

I've got nearly every Sonic Youth album, but I can't say I like them all that much. I keep buying them because there's something there I'm searching for. When they let their songwriting shine and don't insist on being arrogant and underground I really like them. The marriage of sonic dissonance and songcraft is very exciting. Songs like Candle, Disappearer, Cross the Breeze, and The Diamond Sea are amazing, but I have little patience for the songs where Kim is just talking the whole time.
Other than that I've heard that they're real assholes in person. A friend of mine was at a performance art puppet show in NYC and Kim and Thurston sat down next to him. He's a big fan and was sort of terrified so he didn't say anything to them. Before the show started, Kim turned to him and condescendingly remarked, "Can I see that program? You won't be needing it" So he gave it to her and she never gave it back.

Easy with the "sonic youth are assholes" rumors. I'm a member of the Sonic Youth board too, and it's the same as here. Lots of people have stories about how nice they are, and of course there are a few where they were grumpy. I've seen Sonic Youth a bunch of times, and they've always been smiling and saying hi to fans and talking to the audience. |

I'm sorry, but that's about as arrogant as it gets. Give me a fucking break. Fan or not, I would have left regardless.

Whether they like each other or not, I personally always thought that Sonic Youth and the Pixies pretty much covered the ground of everything that came after them. They're both the type of bands that have put such a footprint on rock that they're style has almost become part of the vocabulary. Fugazi comes to mind. Wire comes to mind. Jesus...the Stooges come to mind. The bottom line is, you can't deny The Sonic Youths...There are bands out there that sound like them in a major way, and may not even be aware of it.
Any Brainiac fans in here? |

I always felt that Sonic Youth's vibe is pretty "holier than thou." I mean, they're so super hip it's almost hard to get into more than just their music. |

Honestly, not enough bands nowadays would play reverb for 20 minutes till all the non-fans left. Everything now is so conservative and conventional. What happened when bands would throw away their equipment and leave after 4 minutes, or jump around in glass and pass out 5 songs into the set. Now everyone wants artists to best super nice to the fans and lick everyone's ass. "they were such charming young men" |

Fuck that, dude. You get into rock because you like the music, not because you want to see some guys act like goofs on stage. I like Iggy and the Stooges, but if that motherfucker charges me 35 dollars for a ticket and then just winds up cutting himself and passing out five songs into the set, I'm going to find him after he resumes consciousness and beat the living piss out of him.
Likewise, why the fuck should Thurston Moore and company care if someone in the crowd is a fan or not? They payed their due, and they wanted to see a decent show, not be thrown a heavy dose of Metal Machine Music just for the sake of creating fucking feedback. Oh, and that story about Kim taking someone's programme? What complete and utter fucking hipster arrogance. |

James, have you ever heard someone who saw Iggy Pop when he was in the Stooges NOT say he was one of the single greatest performers they ever saw in their lives?. Maybe instead of listening to rock music you should take up a nice safe hobby, like stamp collecting. |

Yeah, I have no time for snobbery after going out of my way and paying to see a show.
But isn't everybody in Sonic Youth like 50 now or something? Shouldnt they change their name?
Also, I dont know that F.B. likes 'em, but I have read that Thomas Pynchon does. (Which may lead to a new thread, ie) literature and F.B)! |

Well, I've heard that Frank has a lot of respect for Sonic Youth, despite he's mainly interested in the 50s-60s old rock'n roll. I also remember that Frank Black alias Black Francis in 1991 was invited by Sonic Youth and played in solo out of the Pixies in the Sonic Youth's European festival with Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, Babes In Toyland, Iggy...(cf. The video: "Sonic Youth 1991: The year punk broke")
Ah, nostalgy, nostalgy. |

Listen, I'm not saying that performers should be these static, sterile, completely monotonous drones, I'm just saying that I'd rather see Chuck Berry, who is pretty fucking static right now, play some fucking incredible rock music than to watch a bunch of pretentious performance artists waggle their proverbial dicks around stage for the sake of art.

Like Atheist for Catholics, I own several SY albums but don't find myself going back to them very much anymore. It's quite puzzling cuz I continue to hold the band in somewhat high esteem. |

Yeah, there's something amazing there that they keep hinting at and even sometimes achieve on a song to song basis, but I think they've yet to fufill their potential.

Sonic Youth bug the tits off me - when you hear half the songs on "Dirty" - Sugar Kane, Wish Fulfilment etc - you realise what an ace band they could have been. Instead they prefer to hide behind wonky art wibbling and Kim Gordon's feminist-in-a-thumbscrew atonal squawking. What I always LOVED about the Pixies was their lack of pretension; they were never afraid of appealing to the masses; they didn't take a snooty "proles shalt not enjoy our albums" attitude. Sonic Youth are a band people pretend to like to look clever.

Yeah, but I think Sonic Youth's momentary embrace of the mainstream played a part in making about half of Dirty garbage. It's not that the Youth haven't fulfilled their potential, it's just that they could never keep it up for an entire LP. |

Murray St. kicks ass except for plastic sun, but Kim's pretty good on sympathy for the strawberry. Kim's voice definitely can get annoying but I have a lot of respect for people who sing even when their voice sucks. I usually don't have any respect for bands like ACDC or someting where there is a band and they just hire a singer because he sounds good or whatever and all he does is stand up there and sing. I think the singer should be playing some instrument, not necessarily guitar, but some instrument. There are definitely bands I like where the singer just sings but not many. Anyway that brings me back to my point that I respect Kim Gordon even though her voice can drive you crazy. But I love Thurston's voice |

Murray Street is a great album...I think it's one of their best. You take on a greater appreciation for certain songs once you see them live (after seeing them live, I fell in love with Sympathy and Rain on Tin). They really do put on an excellent show. I saw them twice this past tour and they rocked hard both times (although in a Philly vs Detroit debate, Philly would definitely win...the Detroit crowd sucked! they were soooo boring). Both Lee and Thurston are amazing guitar players...I dunno, I just love em. |

I think that is a little presumptious of you, Leo. I consider myself a big Sonic Youth fan, and have all their albums from Kill Yr Idols/Confusion is Sex up to NYC Ghosts and Flowers (i need to get Murray St., i know). basically, although i might not find all their songs or albums amazing, they get me going and I enjoy their music...they stimulate my mind in ways that other bands don't. I could care less about "looking clever." |

Whoa, let's keep this sophisticated. I think that the fact that you don't like them is valid, but implying that nobody should like them because you don't is a little less than something I agree with. I personally haven't listened to them enough to be pro or anti Sonic Youth, but don't forget that outside this forum, there are a LOT more people who don't like/haven't heard of The Pixies or in particular Frank Black (maybe just because they assume that if he's not on the radio it can't be good... bunch of garbage), but that doesn't reduce his music from the 'solid gold' that it is. |

Yeah, what was I thinking? Next time I'll dumb down my vocabulary just so leo doesn't think i'm trying to be clever...and I guess that means I should just stop listening to Sonic Youth altogether as well.
Give me a break! someone is just obviously in a mood for unwarranted personal attacks, so I think keeping things sophisticated is a good suggestion. |

Yeah, it's like that claim that most people who have Velvet Underground albums never listen to them. It's kind of like an illiterate person being jealous of someone who can read. |
