The Houston show was completely amazing. I saw FB in Austin last year and he played about half as many songs as the Houston show. Rich Gilbert was insane. He broke a string, the rest of the band went on to immediately start playing the next song, he replaced the string on stage and halfway through the song started playing when his part came in like nothing happened. He also played with his teeth and a beer bottle. The rest of the band was great. It is great spending very little on the tickets. It allows for more drinking money. Here are some of the songs played that I can remember. I would really like the setlist if anyone has it.
nimrod's son where is my mind cactus gouge away Mr. Grieves Crackity Jones monkey gone to heaven
los angeles all my ghosts 666 st. francis dam disaster robert onion bullet hermaphroditos black rider california bound cold heart of stone how you went so far the farewell bend jane the queen of love
about five new songs
and many more songs I can't remember |

You might be confusing St. Francis with End of Miles...cause they are somewhat similar. |

The whole show was amazing.
Jane, and The Black Rider kicked!
His voice has changed, it's stronger than I ever heard it (ten+ years of shows).
Manitoba was in there too.
Awesome show.

Maybe the missing songs were from Pistolero and Devil's Workshop? It seems to me that he hasn't been representing this album as much as BLD. It seems like he's only been playing Velvety, Heloise, and Whiskey In Your Shoes. I would kinda like to hear Out Of State, This Kingly Cave, & San Antonio, TX, but then again, his set has been so amazing lately, I don't know what I would replace from it (except maybe Heloise & Whiskey themselves for those other DW songs). Oh well, I really shouldn't complain.. I can't wait until the in-store and show here in Orlando on Wed. |

Ok I think i have a complete setlist for the show in the order they were played this is REALLY close. First song: -Bullet -Wicked Son -Jane Queen of love -New house of the Pope( new song? ) -Robert Onion -Cactus -Velvety -Six sixty -six (Larry Norman) -Black Rider (Tom Waits) -California Bound -Mr.Grieves -Cold Heart of Stone -Nimrods son -(??) -Farewll Bend -(??) -Manitoba -Crackityjones -Gouge Away -Hermaphroditos -Monkey gone To Heaven -All my Ghosts -Nadine(?) Encore: -Good Bye Lorraine(??)New song? -Los Angeles...Yes he(Rich) played it with my empty Bud bottle. -How You Went so Far -Where is my Mind ....Thats it kids..I got a decent pic. of the broken guitar string on Rich's SG.The thing about the beer bottle thing , I still had a couple of good swiggs left in the bottle. and Rich ,not wanting to foul his strings of his SG with ,hops barley and such emptied the contents on stage (alcahol abuse!!!!) I talked to him breifly before the show and he was geniunly nice. I was like " Hey Richie"..He said "Hey Matt, How was the drive from Austin"...My younger Brother was in shock .hahah...Even Lovering gave me a shout-out before the show it was cool....Billy Gibbons from ZZ Topp was there too.( FB Fan??)hmmm?)..Ok im a noobie at this tell me how to post some pics. please some one give me a small tutorial.

I'm actually not surprised that BG was there. Billy is much more of a freak than he lets on to most of his fans. His taste in music at this stage in his life has very little in common with what most people would think of as "ZZ Top" music. he continues to tour and spin the fuzzy guitar and all of that, but it's mainly for the dough.
Not that it's a complete put-on, but he's been itching to branch out and do some completely off-the-wall shit for some time now. It's just that he knows his bread and buter fan base won't dig it at all and he's afraid of alienating them.
I'd love to hear he and Frank collaborate on something. Don't forget, Billy was in the Moving Sidewalks, one of the first (and most underrated) Texas psychedelic guitar bands in the mid-1960s...

Greetings,
I was at the show too, and as usual, it was great. No BS, just straight into the tunes. FB didn't even pause for Rich to change his string that he broke while kicking ass on "Nimrod's Son"...and Rich -barely- made it back for that "Farewell Bend" solo, though no one seemed nervous at all. I do think that either not many of the notes from that solo are on the high E string, or he just improvised it out, because though he got it on, he didn't seem to play it much, and had some serious tuning to do on it after the song was over
The last time he was here, he played at the same place (Engine Room, Great place to see a show like FB) and it was great too, though we had no Rich, we had Eric Drew Feldman. So both shows were similar, but very different. This lineup was the same as the show that I saw in Leiden two years ago, and is a great way to See FB and the CAtholics, very loud and very live, and all about style. How about the Rodeo getups?
Anyway, I have many pics and even a couple of smail .avi clips with bad sound of the show(s) and maybe i'll find a way to post them up here when I get a chance. I have a few that really turned out well, better than most of what you see online.
I also made a set list, and it's pretty thorough, with a couple missing (new songs I think)....
Here it is....
Bullet Holiday Song Jane The Queen of Love Robert Onion Cactus Velvety Six-Sixty-Six Black Rider California Bound Mr. Grieves Cold Heart of Stone Nimrod's Son The Farewell Bend Whiskey In Your Shoes Crackity Jones Gouge Away Hermaphroditos Monkey Gone To Heaven All My Ghosts Lost Angeles How You Went So Far Where My Mind
There were a couple of new ones that I didn't recognize, and I have no idea what "Manitoba" is, but otherwise, there's my list... not so different from Crackity's, but I know he played "Whiskey in Your Shoes, not only this time, but last time (one year ago) as well and it wasn't released then. Anyway, great show, let's hope for more in the years to come.
Anyway, maybe soon i find a way to post my good pix.
Wade
PS> how bout that Lovering act? Hard to tell which part was performance and which part was just wingin' it. Still, very funny. Gotta wonder as you watch though, if this was Franks way of teaching him a lesson for takin' sides with Kim. hehehe, I was the one who asked him during the question and answer if he would come out and make a guest appearance on the drums during a Pixies song. He declined and said that the "Scientific Phenomenalist" show was his thing now.
Well, see you all at the show next time...and move over so I can get closer with my camera.
PPS> Did anyone buy that CD that Rich is pimping? the Rich Gilbert Experiment, or something like that? I was curious, but didn't have another 15$ in my pocket at the time. Just wondering how it is.

One more thing,
BG was there, and I have seen him at a Frank Black show before... it was pre-Pistolero at Fitzgeralds, and the show was the first I had seen Rich play guitar. Great Great show. Anyway, Billy Gibbons was at that show too, shaking hands with those who cared after the show, and he said he was a fan of Frank as he shook my hand with the hand that plays some of the finest licks in guitar history. So, it seems he is a pretty big fan of FB, at least enough to go to two different shows (at least) that are about 6 years apart.
Oh, and I found a pic from last years show, and when I get this years show here on this computer, i'll post some of those...anyway, here's one of the better pix i got from the show at the engine room last year. Hmm, wonder if posting this will work.

Well, I don't wanna start any trouble, after reading what should and should not be posted, do you think posting pix that I took myself would be considered "Bootleg" and thus not ok to post here??
I mean, like I said, I don't wanna start any trouble, heheh, but I also have some .avi clips, 30 sec. and less each, of small parts of certain songs from both of the last two Houston shows at the Engine room. It's all done from my rinky dinky little digital camera, and Frank even smiled right at me during one of the avi's from last years show. There are always other cameras there, and he never seems to be affected or irritated (visibly) that people are taking pix (I don't use a flash 99% of them personally) but, I'm rambling...
Anyway, the sound on the .avi's ranges from tolerable to bad, but seeing them in action always reminds me just how good the shows are. I have been thinking of saving them out as .wmv or .mov files and loading them on my webserver, and since finding this site, posting them here for people who know and care. I don't know, it's just so good (their music/shows), and it seems like so few people know, I just wanna show the world, or at least the part that would know good music/shows if it snuck up and bit them, you know.
But if it's not appropriate to put those pix here, or to post links to these movie files, then will the moderator Let me know? I don't wanna get Frank, or people involved with Frank, pissed at the site, or people from the site pissed at me... it's too good and I'm too glad to have it. Maybe I'm making something out of nothing, but just don't wanna screw anything up. I don't know.
So, if the moderator(s) will give me the thumbs up, I'll post the best of what I've got up there (10-20 pix or so)... might even scan a few from the show I went to in Leiden, NET two years ago and post them as well (crappier camera, maybe two "good" shots).
Cool, well glad someone else thought the pic was good, thanks. |

Ok, well, here goes. I'll post this years pix first, and then some of the better ones from last year. Both shows were, as mentioned before, at the Engine Room.
I will say that these are not retouched, and haven't really been color corected for optimum viewing, but that they are good enough to share. So, here goes.
Also, I guess I'll just upload the .avi's to the FTP as .avi's and not convert them? Sound good? Great. I'll do it... I have several clips of them doing Pixies songs (small clips, and recorded more Pixies not because that's what I'm there for but because a friend asked me to record some of it and I got carried away. Anyway, I do have quite a bit from "Los Angeles" that I'm piecing together in Quicktime, and I'll upload that as well.
Soooo.... for now..... I don't know, are these going to be too large for most people? will this irritate folks? I don't know... if so, I'll remove the mass and leave the best, but for now, couldn't decide which were best.
Also, i have more , but these are the best for the most part.... (to come)

Oh yeah, I promised a couple from last year, didn't i.
I will say that Frank seemed to not want direct spotlights on him so much this year as compared to last, and as such, the pictures of him from this years show tend to be darker, and harder to discern (man it was smoky in there this time around)
Anyhow, enjoy....

I think they're too big, or mb the server slows (it does serve some tiny videos on occasion) anyway, I think I'll make some sort of Flash thing or site., similar to the Qris guy mentioned elsewhere on this site, and then post the URL here. Until then...i'll leave them I guess, but I think it may load too slowly for dialup folks.
I don't know... just thinking "out loud" |
