My wife, Veronica, and I got to the Double Door shortly before doors opened. This was my first vist to the venue, and were greeted by a sign pointing out the fact that no cameras were allowed. Despite this, Veronica's bag was not checked, and we were in. Staking out a spot in front of where Rich will be playing, we chatted a bit with the other folks who were there and ending up meeting Kirk, who posts by the handle" Frequency of Glow". The stage here is fairly low, and the PA is suspended from the ceiling so it has a more open feel. After a few rounds from the bar, David Lovering took the stage and did the Scientific Phenom. schtick, which was fairly entertaining and a nice departure from the usual. Got some photos of the glowing pickle and asked David a question duing the Pixies Q&A segment: BW: What was your favorite show you played during any of the tours? DL: Boy, that might have to be this one time we played in Berkeley, that one seems to stand out as a pretty wild time. He finished up with singing a measure of "La-La-Love You" and the stage was changed over for FB&theC's. Frank Black took the stage alone shortly after 11, and hoisting his trusty Takemine acoustic , proceeded to take control of the room. Frank lets us know the rest of the band "Still must be having that card game in the bus" and began to play solo." Valentine and Garuda" and "Are You Headed My Way?" were 2 he played at the start. After Veronica was able to get a few photos, a Double Door guy told her to stash the camera. Club policy. Undaunted by this, she spots Rich a few feet away waiting offstage. We had brought along a print of "Rich's Pedals" that she shot in '00 and were planning on giving it to him after the show. He graciously accepted the print but could not convince the guy from the club to let her shoot.( Big thanks to Rich for asking!) After 4 numbers, Rich joins Frank and they chat a bit about the previous nights revelry and how the card game is going. I'm writing down the songs in a sprial notebook and after the show notice the first page is missing, DAMMIT! So, I'm not able to list all the songs played during the time each band member made their entrance. Next up was Dave M., then Dave P., and finally Scott "Harris" B. who was wearing a little blue foam cowboy hat. "Dirty 'Ol Town" was played after everyone got settled in, also a killer rendering of "Bullet". Frank's voice was in top form, from full-on scream to straight-forward storytelling, and he was fairly chatty with the crowd between songs. Around now, my notes are intact, and these songs were played in order: Nimrod's Son Calistan Heloise- Rich playing lap steel gave this a nice touch Cactus Gouge Away Whiskey In Your Shoes All My Ghosts Monkey Gone To Heaven- Full electric treatment, still a great song.. Sign Of Your Love(?)- A new one to me, the one with the 'hills of Central France line" Black Letter Day Men in Black- WOOOOOO!!!! Velvety-Frank attacks his Telecaster to the point of string failure, puts it down to close with.. Black Rider It's now past 1am, and the band exits to wild applause, only to return a moment later to encore with: Cold Heart Of Stone California Bound Where Is My Mind? All in all, it was a dynamic show played before a very well behaved sold- out crowd. Others were also writing down the tracks, including Kirk, who mentioned he will post the ones I'm missing at some point soon. We spoke a bit with Rich afterwards, who had changed into a Pokemon shirt (Pika-Chuuuuuu!) and he once again thanks us for the photo and we have a short chat while Frank and a couple roadies load out. Truly a nice guy and an excellent musician. I then managed to get Frank's ear after the work was done, after he finished a nightcap at the bar talking with Kirk and some other fan. He was friendly and gave me the impression that, if we put a solid professional proposal before his management, he may consider performing at a show that this forum organizes. A few more "Thanks" and "Great Shows" were passed around as we now by the bus with the rest of the group and all headed to Brewtown. I'm not sure if I can get out of work for the show at Shank, so I'm very happy we made the short dash to Chicago.

As promised to the lovely and talented Steakand Sabre, here are the complete set lists for both the March 28 and March 29 shows. There are only about 9 songs that overlap both nights, so those lucky enough to see 2 shows in the same city will be treated to quite a catalog. I will only post the songs, as SteakandSabre did quite a good job describing the venue, atmosphere, etc. I will only say that Frank was in rare form. I bought him a Guinness afterwards!
Friday- Where Is My Mind? Whiskey In Your Shoes Bullet Sir Rockaby Robert Onion New House of the Pope Mr. Grieves Los Angeles California Bound Cold Heart of Stone Headache Horrible Day Six Sixty-Six Nimrod's Son Jane the Queen of Love Gouge Away Hermaphroditos Crackity Jones I Want Rock n Roll ( I nearly passed out from rocking so hard) How You Went So Far Cactus Muscaf Centrale There Goes Nadine
encore: Manitoba Holiday Song The Black Rider
Saturday- Brackish Boy Valentine and garuda New Song (My Favorite Kiss?) I Gotta Move Chip Away Boy Are You Headed My Way? Sister Isabel Farewell Bend (Rich did a mind blowing solo) Dirty Ol' Town End of Miles (by request of Scott) Bullet John the Revelator Nimrod's Son Calistan Heloise (so close to Heaven!!) Cactus Gouge Away Whiskey In Your Shoes All My Ghosts Monkey Gone To Heaven Muscaf Centrale Black Letter Day Men In Black Velvety The Black Rider
encore: Cold Heart of Stone California Bound Where Is My Mind?
He also played an acoustic in-store at Tower records on Saturday. As he took the stage, we all stood and he jokingly said, "or sit if you're more comfortable" so we did. I was too distarcted to write the set list. He signed autographs afterwards, holding two markers, so it was like getting 2 in 1. He signed my copy of TOTY. Suitable for framing.

this is my first post, so i just want to say that the person or people running this site are awesome and that this forum is great. i was at the 3-29 show and it rocked. i think that i have never seen frank scream as hard as he was during sister isabel! i wasn't able to go to the friday show, but now that i see that setlist i really wish i could have. i thought that i wouldn't miss too much, but those setlists were sooo different that it really would have been two totally different shows. i will be going to the milwaukee show tonight, so i am really hoping to hear some more new songs like manitoba, there goes nadine, and the hills of central france song again. but fb & the cs never dissapoint, so i should be in for a hell of a show. |

saw the 3-28 show and yes i wish i had gone to both -was screaming for them to play 'peace' (during the encore brake) mainly cause its' a great song and in '98 i believe he did play it at metro -oh well i was surprised he didn't play it on sat. either. met dave philips -nice guy -bass player john from wilco was there -people were taking pictures with little micro cameras and yes it was a kick-ass show -why couldn't wilco be based in LA and FB&C be based here?-@#$-(in Chicago) -given Franks' references to the desert im surprised he doesn't base out of Tucson or someplace in New Mexico (Phoenix is a pit) -does any body know what song Stan Ridgeway plays on from 'Devils Workshop'?
