firstly, it was kick ass!
opened with 'bullet' and next song was 'holiday song' (pixies).
did a lot of new stuff mixed in with some old pixies - mostly from 'doolittle'.
did absolutely nothing from first 3 solo cd's (frank black, teenager and cult of ray).
one encore, started with 'gouge away' and ended with 'hermaphroditos' to the best of my recollection.
go see him if you can...

Hi, all. I'm new here, obviously, and prob'ly won't be around much, but thought I'd give my 2 cents on the show in Tempe, AZ Friday night. Some of this has been said already I guess... you'll have to excuse me, as I'm doing a little cutting & pasting from a post elsewhere, so I don't have to type all this again! Lazy, I know. Sorry. Also sorry that I don't have a set list for y'all either. Anyway....
It's been prob'ly 4-5 years since the last time I saw Frank, and I've been lax about buying his CDs (BAD me, I know), so there's a lotta stuff I've missed. I'd forgotten just how ASSKICKIN' he is!!! Me oh my that man doth ROCK. As do the Catholics.
I got there early and staked out a place just to stage right of Frank's mic, right in front. EXCELLENT spot. Turns out the opening act (I don't even remember who it was supposed to be) got stranded 100 miles away by the weather, or car trouble, or both, or something. Which was fine by me -- I was ready for Frank!! But had to wait about 2 hrs (!!!) til he/they FINALLY took the stage. It was worth it, tho'. Of course.
Frank was decked out in brown Levis and a stylin', schmancy Western shirt -- woo! He barely talked at all, aside from introducing the band at one point, and saying "thanks" a time or 2. Mostly it was just song after song, bambambam. And it was GREAT. Nothing off his first 3 solo albums, sadly, but a lot of (what I assume is) newer, Catholics stuff, and a little classic Pixies (lessee... off the top o' my head -- "Crackity Jones," "Mr. Grieves," "Nimrod's Son," errr... "Monkey Gone to Heaven"...um... that's all I can recall right now). And "Dirty Old Town," which I know as a Pogues song but don't know if it's a Pogues original or a cover for them too.
The crowd was surprisingly well behaved for most of the show. My past Frank Black live experience had seen me smooshed and pummeled. So I was sort of warily expecting that... but it wasn't too bad. A few mosh-pushes from behind, but for the most part had a little space to breathe and it was ok. Until (cue ominous music) -- THE ENCORE. Suddenly, annoying drunk chicks sprung up like mushrooms in a cow pasture after a rainstorm, appearing outta NOWHERE. Screaming and clutching and pushing and elbowing. URGH. I decided to be indulgent and not get annoyed; braced my palms against the stage and widened my stance & let 'em shove. Then a chick climbed up & kneeled on the stage beside my left arm... annoying, but she was ok for a while... started really getting on my nerves when she kept grabbing Frank, by the arm, by the leg... he ignored her... then she went in for a 2 handed ass grab and he gave her a most withering look, which she totally missed cause she was busy being proud of herself. Oy. Idiot. I always feel so awful for performers who have to deal with cretins on a regular basis. Ugh. THEN the band kicked into "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and of course everybody got even crazier and assgrabchick jumped to her feet and leapt from the stage into the crowd. As she stood, she slammed me in the side of the head and as she leapt, she boxed me soundly in the ear. Dunno what she hit me with -- elbow? Knee? Foot? Some combination thereof? -- but DAMN it hurt! Luckily, no permanent damage, but had a brief seeing stars moment and missed the best part of the song (y'know -- "... and if the devil is 6... THEN GOD IS SEVEN!! THEN GOD IS SEVEN!!!..." all that part). GRRRRR. But hey, that's rock&roll, my friends (unfortunately), and I will live. Tho' in a perfect world, idiots would NOT be allowed out in public with regular folks. Ah well.
Musically speaking, I wish they'd played "Debaser." But as things woulda prob'ly gotten REALLY dangerous then, maybe it's just as well they didn't.
Anyway, the point of all this is FRANK BLACK ROCKS and I'm glad I went. He's come thru the Phoenix area semi-regularly over the years, and every time he does I say "I should go!" but then something will come up, or I'll be feeling lazy, or whatever. But I know I should not let that happen, because Frank does not disappoint. I'll try to be more vigilant in future. Heh. But for those of you going to upcoming shows, consider wearing a crash helmet or somethin' if you're gonna be up front. Heehee!
I didn't take my camera, dammit. Ah well. Maybe next time around.
Hey, "you aint me" -- did they really end with "Hermaphroditos"? "Monkey..." is the last thing I remember. But I was a little distracted at that point. And I'd been trying to remember if they did "Gouge Away;" I'm gonna have to believe you and say the answer to that is "yes." Thanks.

Dirty Old Town is not a Pogues original.
It's a pretty old song from 2 singers, can't remember their names on this board

I read somewhere that they've started selling CDs and hats for the recent shows.
Did anyone notice what CDs they were selling? I'm wanting a second copy of Oddballs and I'd rather buy it from the band than off the web. I'm going to the Dallas show.
Thanks. |

It's by the late, great Ewan MacColl (father of the late, great Kirsty MacColl, who had some Pogues associations of her own.)

Oh yeah, and I've practically never been to a show where there wasn't some drunk chick trying to grope Frank and some lip-synching psycho trying to grab his mike stand. I don't know why people have to be such assholes. |

Wow. Stuff like that hasn't happened at the Catholics shows I've been to. Seriously. |

It may only happen in more southerly climes--folks tend to be a little rowdier and more "hands on" at shows. There's my mass generalization for tonight! (Of course, there's Big Galoof's account of the brawl in Winooski, VT, so I guess it's really just the luck of the draw.) |

I didn't think "Dirty Old Town" was a Pogues original, but I was too lazy to get up and check for sure. Heh.
Sorry, OliverK, I didn't notice which CDs were being sold (tho' they WERE indeed). Guess you'll have to wait & see for yourself. But yes, discs & hats.
I haven't been to many (any?) rowdy shows in a while... maybe it's just been my choice in music these days (I AM getting "old;" hee!), or maybe it's just the fact that AZ breeds a lot of apathetic audiences. Or maybe both. I'm thinkin' both.
I was thinkin' -- it's been longer than 4-5 yrs since my last FB show. Prob'ly more like 6-7? I don't know. I don't remember chicks groping him back then, but then again the last time I saw him there was a barrier thingie between us and the stage, which would make gropage difficult. Sooo... yeah. The security guy had to come out several times to manhandle people off the stage this time around. Just enjoy the damn music, people, and leave the stage to the band! Geez.
But like I said, maybe I'm just getting old....hahahaha

They did have a hat for sale and a few of the most recent catholics CDs. No oddballs though, I think it was Self titled, DITH, Black Letter Days, and Devil's Workshop. There was another album there but I don't know what it was. It had some old people on the cover and I don't think it was a FB CD. |

lah, you may be right about 'monkey' being the final song on the night. it just seemed like 'hermaphroditos' was the last, but my memory doesn't always serve me right.
i'm fairly certain 'gouge away' was the first song of the encore. it was definitely performed for it is one of my faves and remember being very pleased that he did it!
lah, very good description of what happened that night. yes, there seemed to be an unusual ammount of chicks jumping the stage. i didn't care for that for they weren't much to look at and i didn't pay to see them. other than that, the crowd was well-mannered.
my big complaint is the lack of sound quality at nita's. cement floors in a big barn type building make for too much echo.
