I hardly ever watch Austin City Limits. It seems like they always have Los Lobos every time I flip by. So how long does an act get to play? If Frank could only play five or six songs, which ones should he "showcase"?
My choices
1. St. Francis Dam Disaster-- This songs could've been a hit if it only ever got decent airplay.
2. Southbound Bevy-- I used to think about the world, like so many people do. But I probably think about too many useless ideas like Frank ever actually being on ACL, and some doof like me choosing the songs.
3. Calistan-- used to be Navajo. An ode to old, great Frank Black stuff.
4. San Antonio, TX-- what a great song with another Texas city in the title for Austin City Limits.
5. Whispering Weeds-- This is the Van Morrison song from BLD. I always tip my hat to it.
6. Velvety-- End the set on the biggest bestest jam of the two releases. I like my lemur I lick it.

Since ACL is traditionally country and blues (I did recently see Beck on there backed up by the Flaming Lips ((totally cool show!) I'd lean towards the countryish Frankie songs
(in no particular order)
1. Jet Black River
2. Chip Away Boy
3. Manitoba
4. Whiskey In My Shoes
5. Stupid Me (okay, couldn't think of any other country-ish songs)

Thanks chipahoyboy for keeping this topic alive. In my quest to try to get Frank on ACL, it is good to see others instigate the notion. Hopefully SpinArt/Frank/or whoever sees these threads enough will cause them to say ‘ok, I am going to make this happen.’ I am currently stationed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and I am driving down to Dallas and Houston next week to see the band. Just as I will pick up and go next week I would pick up and go to Austin to see such a landmark show!

Differentiation at it's best...

Well, how about

Robert Onion ( a single, a popular song and a hard rockin' start)
California Bound
Cactus ( a little pixies)
Jane, the Queen of Love
Every Time I go 'Round, Here (oldie with a trad feel)
Velvety/Black Rider (Medley - won't it be great? really finish with a hard rockin' jamm of the two fastest killers of recent FB's work)

I would like to see the new song "Nadine" would be great. At least I think it is a new song...I have heard him play it at a few shows.

Instead of choosing his "countryfied" songs to fit the ACL format, it'd be cool if he came out with a full band to play songs that he seldom plays live. That way we'd all get a chance to see them in like a one-time only gig as opposed to following him around on tour hoping he'll bust out one of his rare gems. How about this line-up:
1. Old Black Dawning
2. Superabound
3. Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons
4. I Want To Live On An Abstract Plain
5. His Kingly Cave
6. St. Francis Dam Disaster
7. Debaser

No! No Debaser! Debaser belongs to the past! I can think of very few things as rediculous as Frank performing Debaser again

A good song is a good song is a good song. Getting all bent about the past is counter-productive. You can't convince me that the crowd at one of Frank's shows wouldn't just go ballistic if he started belting out "I am un chien andalusia" again!

Ofcourse they will. Just like audiences go balistic when Mick Jager sings I can't get no satisfaction (without Viagra). It's a good song, but for the stones to play it today is not art but nostalgy mongering.
