I reckon that American bands produce better music that us Brits.... certainly in the past few years anyhow. Most of my favourite bands are American, and I have to say that in recent years British music has gone a little downhill.
What do you all think??

I haven't heard any decent british music in ages. Blur and the Prodigy rock though. I don't think American bands on the whole are better though. If you think how many people live in America, they should be able to find more decent bands than there are. |

Actually think that it see-saws. Back and forth. That's what's good about the musical relationship. If it's bad now in the UK, the good US bands will influence the new brit bands and Vice Versa.

There is this new wave revolution of 'good' Brit music. Bands like: Hell Is For Heroes Hundred Reasons Muse etc You forgot Radiohead. |

I agree with The Swimmer, it does shift every ten years or so from one side of the Atlantic to the other. But nobodies mentioned all the hyped bands that are really popular in the U.K. but I don't know if they made it across the water to America yet, like The Libertains, The Coral, Elbow, Doves, Electric Six and The Cooper Temple Clause(I think thats what thier called). Personally I think thier ok but nothing amazing. My fav U.K. groups that dont get alot of exposure would be Belle and Sebastian, Clinic and Baxter Dury's, who's new debut album is really great and I'd highly recommend it to anyone,I also really love Supergrass. What I can't believe is Coldplay getting all those Brit Awards, I think thier such a dry mediocre band, give me Miss Dynamite anyday! Sorry Malax but I think Hundred Reasons are a really weak band who sound way too like At The Drive In, and theres much better American bands like The Liars and Modest Mouse. The whole English V American music is'nt as claer cut anymore anyways as it's getting diluted with really good bands from other countries who are heavly influenced by both countries(D4 and The Datsuns from New Zeland). Someone needs to start a thread on music from Iceland, thats were lots of really diverse and cool stuff is coming from!

Oh and The Tindersticks are really good as well, I always forget I saw them live though? Radiohead are really good but I've only really thought they were supremely great since Amnesiac when the got really experimental!

Sorry I just remembered Gorky's Zygotic Mynci(yey for Welsh music!, Super Furry Animals!!!!amazing!!!! and I just heard The Manic Street Preachers on the radio today who nobody mentioned) who are really great but then I love Will Oldam (American)(Boony "Prince" Billy, Palace Brothers) just as much, most people don't hear of these bands, it's all about chart invasions from one side or the other?

The British scene seems to have gone shite since the mid nineties when Britpop was in fashion. Most bands nowadays are a poor mans Oasis, which is pretty bad considering Oasis are a heap of shit. Bands like Blur, and Radiohead seem to be keeping British music repectable..... but in my opinion the Americans are currently doing better.
I'd agree with the swinging backwards and forwards comments though.... I reckon its high time for the Brits to drop the pretencious shite and come back with with some 80's style stadium rock.... thats got to be the way forward for British music.

I haven't heard Amnesiac yet. I thought Kid A was really great when I first heard it, but I'm not as sure now. The sonic experimentation to solid-songwriting ratio is a little high.
I saw Soundtrack Of Our Lives on Conan O'Brien and Letterman. Was pretty impressed, actually. They reminded me of the Who. |

Gay Dad, Guided By Voices and Robyn Hitchcoc are a few more worth mentioning, but i'd agree that there's a LOT more coming out of the US...tho i really don't care where the music i like comes from. =) |

I used to love Radiohead after seeing them live in Bristol in '95..... but their recent albums have been too depressing.... Ive got Amnesiac and started listening to it when I had a cracking hangovr one morning.... safe to say I had to turn it off as it started making me feel worse. The Bends and O.K. Computer are amazing albums, but their recent stuff is not to my liking.

It will be interesting to hear the new Cure album when it comes out in 100 years time.... but their last effort was just a repeat of what they have done before but only nowhere near as good, and the new songs on their greatest hits album were shite..... like who dares to sing a duet with Sonya from Republic..... thats definately a step back for a band as good as The Cure.

I don't like them, I was just pointing out that the media make these bands out to be the new wave of brit rock. They are a poor At The Drive In but then I don't like them either. |

Also, the Fall's good, though my opinion's based on two albums from the early '80s. Someday I'm gonna buy a Hitchcock/Soft Boys album. |

Sorry Malax, sounded like you liked them, I'm glad you think that way as well, I only really like a couple of At The Drive in songs but I still feel thier far superior to Hundred Reasons, but sadly they've spawned alot of shit bands. I think a good comparison for both sides of the Atlantic are the superb DJ Shadow and Aphex Twin, both making great music, though both thier last albums did'nt get such good reviews as thier previous ones.

I cannot believe it..... I wrote yesterday about The Cure (for some insane reason) recording a song with that bird from Republic (I don't actually think her name is Sonya) for their greatest hits album. Ive just checked out the Chain of Flowers website, which stated even worse news:
"Sophie Ellis Bextor is being lined up to work with THE CURE on the veteran goth rockers¡¯ new album. It is not yet clear exactly what contribution Sophie Ellis Bextor will make."
What the fuck??????????

If the rumours are true then the Cure are getting desperate for ideas for new material...... maybe its time for then to call it a day before they turn into the Status Quo of alternative rock.

Lately it seems like very few good new bands are coming out of both countries. This probably has more to do with marketing and the big (quick) bucks than the actual number of new kick ass bands around.
ASIDE: Why don't the big corps back up more rock instead of crap pop? In the long run, a great rock album will sell and sell and sell... they 'd make profits for a long time. While this pop shit is just a flash in the pan. I think history has shown this time and time again with the disco era, etc.. etc.. This just seems like good business to me. Maybe I'm missing something, but is seems like common sense...

i don't think american bands are any better, but they're probably better funded. anyway, what's up with american bands and the whole brit scene? i hate it when people wear the brit flag. i saw a picture of shakira with the british flag on her shirt. why?

Fuck knows, I don't even know who she is (go away for a year and you lose touch with the music scene)...... its not deemed good in Britain to wear the British flag as thats what neo nazi's wear. If you wear the flag then you're considered a nationalist..... what nationality is Shakira?

Shakira is colombian
This discusion is weird For instance: I love The Kinks and John Lennon which are english artist (of course) but at some point of both their carreers they went to make more american music. Both in the 70's if I'm right...
And (in the very begin) they were influenced by american Rythem and Blues or Elvis Presley and made those fantastic music which influenced a lot of american bands to make fantastic music which influenced a lot of Brittish bands to make fantastic music...
see the point?
