***if you haven't seen the movie, you probably shouldn't read this!***

Hmm. I love the movie, but it still keeps me guessing. My little theory is that although the cop John G. was creepy, he wasn't the real killer, and that Leonard decided to kill the cop when he made him angry. So he made a split second decision while angry, wrote down a note, and then when he forgot the incident, he thought he had a real lead on the case. He says himself that he could make his own reality, and that this particular John G. could be his John G. if he decided on it.

Did you know that on the special edition DVD you can watch the movie in chronological order?

If you watch the movie in chronological order it tends to make more sense. The only thing I still have a problem with is Jimmy. How does Jimmy Gantz know Leonard Shelby? That bothers me. Such a good movie though.

I thought it went...

Attacked by burglers, killed wife through OD on medication, wandered around, killed people, was told truth by pal, didn't like truth so made pal seem bogus, killed people, killed pal.

i may be way off, but i thought the wife faked her death, so that she could get away from leonard--perhaps because his short term memory problem was too much for even a loved one to handle.

He didn't have the problem before she died though.

Gosh i haven't seen this movie in a while. but from what i remember, the wife didn't actually die, but Guy Pierce (Leonard?) thought she was dead because she seemed dead when he snapped into his memory-loss thing, so therefore he thinks she is dead because it's, i guess embedded in his memory that she is "dead." I hope i am making sense. I am making sense in my head. ha. i need to watch the movie again.

I'm pretty sure she wasn't dead. Some guy came in and raped and TRIED to murder her...Lenny was attacked and got his brain damage. Teddy was the cop who worked the case and helped Lenny find the attacker and murder him. This part was never shown in the movie, the only evidence is the picture of Lenny with his shirt off, which Teddy took of him right after Lenny murdered the attacker so that Lenny could remember/see how happy he was after he killed him. He then just continued on "going after the killer," pretty much working as Teddy's sidekick. Lenny decided at some point that he did not want to believe Teddy's truth, instead creating his own reality, so he made the note to "not believe Teddy's lies," which eventually lead to that girl getting him to kill Teddy. Now, the part where I'm confused is when Lenny showed up at that bar in that chick's dead boyfriend's car...and why she wasn't suspicious, how she knew him, etc. That's the only part I don't get.

If she wasn't dead though, where did she disappear to?

And you're right, El Barto, when he shows up at the bar, I'm really surprised that Natalie doesn't freak out on him. How many people look at a situation like that and calmly turn the tables to their advantage?

the problem is....if she was alive after the break-in, and he killed her through diabetes overdose, then that would have been a new memory he made because he projected what might have happened with him and his wife onto Sammy Jenkins

She definitely was alive after the break-in. And yeah, the whole Sammy Jenkins story is weird, because of his "Remember Sammy Jenkins" tattoo. Did you all catch the part where Sammy is sitting in the home and someone walks past in front of the camera and Sammy turns into Lenny? It seems as though, yes, Lenny killed his wife with the overdose (wasn't there a flashback in there showing Lenny with his wife?). Maybe Sammy's wife really was who she was, and Lenny really did work with Sammy and his wife. That's another tough one.

I think Natalie might have known who Lenny was before he showed up. She knew her boyfriend went somewhere to sell drugs and I think she knew that a guy named Teddy was the one who he was selling to (of course it was a bust, because Teddy was always an undercover cop). Perhaps she also knew that Lenny was with Teddy...there was a coaster with a message, and a whole story behind the coasters with messages that I don't remember. We all have to watch it again :)

Good question, but I believe that's what the "remember Sammy Jenkis" is about.

This website will kill our discussion:

he remembers that he has the condition because it's pure conditioning. the other guy who has it didn't respond to conditioning, but he knew that he was missing time, so that could make sense there, too. he, however, did respond to conditioning (which, if you remember, was another brain function altogether), and therefor could "remember" what he had. that's the case with people who have that disorder in real life, too.
