Just typing to let you guys and gals know about the fire at The Station West Warwick, Rhode Island where the '80s metal band Great White played for just minutes before the place went down in a blaze caused by the pyrotechnics. I just want to send out my condolences - very sad, indeed.
Differentiation at it's best... |

I watched the video footage this morning on the news and was absolutely horrified, and very sad. I live nearby (Boston) so I am sure it will be the big story for awhile to come. Is scary when you think about going out to shows (which I and many people here do often) but it is some kind of lesson I guess. Just so tragic. |

It's really upsetting what with the other club in Chicago and the subway fire in Korea.
Living is good. When I hear stuff like this in the news I can't help but to think that. Makes me love my family and friends even more.

I'm sorry if this comes off as lowbrow, but maybe this will be a lesson to all 80s metal bands out there: just keep it in your basement, guys. |

The sound proofing around the stage was the biggest problem. Some of that stuff is extremely flammable. They've used it in firing ranges and have had it burst into flame from being too close to a gun going off. On top of that, the smoke it creates is very toxic. I think both the band and the club manager's careers are done.
Incidentally, did you read that the worst club fir was in 1942 at Cocoanut Grove in Boston? It killed 491 people.

Did you see about the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate Ky in 1977? My parents' neighbors parents were killed in that fire. Very tragic they had just paid the mortgage off on their house and were out to celebrate.

I agree. I went into this topic wanting to say something along those lines.
What's a sappy 80's band doing playing shows in 2000 and using pyrotechnics? Supposedly the venue didn't give permission to Great White to use the stuff they did. But, who knows. It's sad that that many people died.

It's like they still have all the lighting and stage gear from when they were playing arenas, but now they're trying to cram it into a club that fits 300 people.
Did I read correctly that their guitarist died in the fire?
That image of all those people stuck in the entrance way has been haunting me the last couple of days. I really wish TV news would censor itself.

Do you realize the number of people who died were more than half of the Oklahoma city Federal Building bomb victims? All because some washed up band wanted FIRE like fucking Spinal Tap or something.

Sorry, I guess I should have said "I wish J Mascis on the Frank Black Board was first to have all his flesh burned off of his rotten stinking ass body" but that wouldn't have been nice.
I was feeling nice.

I also read that the guitarist died. How many people have been killed in this incident??? People never seem to learn from past mistakes....
I also agree that pyrotechnics should be a think of the past, does anyone remember when Blackie Lawless (lead singer from WASP) used to set off fireworks from a gadget underneath his groin? One gig the things decided to explode, which must have been a little hairy for him, and no doubt dangerous for the crowd.

How ironic are some these lyrics now. I was in middle school when this was popular and I admit I liked this song. I also liked their cover of Babe I'm gonna Leave You, the classic Zeppelin tune. And I'd have to say, GW is partially responsible for my former obsession with Led Zepplin in my early teens. Other than that, they suck and are complete dumbasses for causing this massacre.
-------------- Well the times are gettin' hard for you little girl I'm a-hummin' and a-strummin' all over God's world You can't remember when you got your last meal And you don't know just how a woman feels
You didn't know what rock-n-roll was Until you met my drummer on a grey tour bus I got there in the nick of time Before he got his hands across your state line
Now it's the middle of the night on the open road And the heater don't work and it's oh so cold You're lookin' tired you're lookin' kinda beat The rhythm of the street sure knocks you off your feet
You didn't know how rock-n-roll looked Until you caught your sister with the guys from the group Halfway home in the parking lot By the look in her eye she was giving what she got
My my my, once bitten, twice shy babe My my my, once bitten, twice shy babe My my my, once bitten, twice shy babe
Woman you're a mess gonna die in your sleep There's blood on my amp and my Les Paul's beat Can't keep you home from messin' around My best friend told me you're the best lick in town
You didn't know that rock-n-roll burnedSo you bought a candle and you lived and you learned You got the rhythm, you got the speed Mama's little baby likes it short and sweet
I didn't know you had a rock-n-roll record Until I saw your picture on another guy's jacket You told me I was the only one But look at you now it's dark and you're gone
My my my, once bitten, twice shy

The video footage was so disturbing. Seeing all of those people stuck in the doorway. They were so close to safety, yet so tragically far. I remember seeing their faces...
I think it was stupid for them to use pyrotechnics in such a small club, permission or not. The band truly was stuck in the 80s, a very ridiculous decade to be stuck in might I add.
Just think though, something like that could have happened to any one of us at a show. As an audience member, there is no way of telling if the band is going to pull some shit like that.
I think all of those dumbass hair-bands have something to learn here. I don't know quite what, but they do! They sucked in the 80s and they still suck now! |
