I was hoping that something interesting would come of this. To my ear, it sounds just like the Pumpkins, which has mostly to do with Billy Corgan's voice. It just sounds like him, and thus it sounds like the pumpkins. I've only heard a small amount of their material, and I saw their boring video for "Honestly" today, and I'm quite dissapointed. Forget Corgan and Zwan, I want a new Chavez record! From that man who was too loud, and played with GBV back in the day, Matt Sweeny. Oh, and new records by Spoon, Interpol, John Vanderslice and the Notwist are all really, really good. But I want Chavez la loma, I'm in a state. |

Yeah I listened to the cd today at the record store, and wasn't really blown away by any of it. Usually on something I listen to theres a couple songs that I know are going to really blow me away eventually, but I didn't hear much like that, and I used to be a huge pumpkins fan. |

these are some of the weakest criticisms i've ever heard in my life.
sounds the same as the pumpkins? firstly, it doesn't and secondly of course if your opinion of the pumpkins' sound is billy's voice, then ANYTHING he does will sound like pumpkins to you.
billy doesn't have anything to say? really, neither does frank. neither do they might be giants. so what? who gives a fuck? i don't think i even own a CD by a band 'with a message' because you know what? messages get in the way of art.
if you don't really like the pumpkins then it's not too surprising you don't like Zwan. i have only heard a couple off the songs (off the website) but i like what i've heard. but i'm a big pumpkins fan. Zwan is definitely a lot happier than most any pumpkins stuff, but beyond that the bass player can actually play (d'arcy never could), and james iha isn't there (i haven't heard enough to see if the other two guitarists are as creative or talented as james but i'd have faith in billy to find good ones, since he's quite the amazing player when he wants to be.)
you guys have totally underdeveloped tastes.
(ps - guy who posted above me, you're an idiot. there's maybe 5 songs on mellon collie that were more 'angsty' than anything they'd done before. 5. out of 38. you're a retard.) |

That Chris Cornell/Rage band is Audio Slave. I wasn't too impressed with that one song they put out.
From what i've heard of Rage (original), they didn't develop their sound much over the many years they were together. I really like their first two albums, but it seems like the majority of their riffs are based on a low E note/string or low D if they drop D. They have some really great songs, but seems like they could have done more "sound-experimenting" on their third album or whatever. Maybe that's why they broke up.
This is just an opinion (in case Ebb Vicious is a huge Rage fan too).
Now, i need to check out Zwan cuz i haven't heard them yet.

D'arcy is cool though!
Anyway, on the Zwan website, there's these review links that raves on and on about the two other guitarists. I think I'll really like 'em! |

That's 5 out of twenty-8, Ebb. The "grunge-bandwagon" statement was definitely a little lame, though. No big deal. |

err yeah, 28. hrmmm why did i think 38? that's probably the number of tracks in 'aeroplane flies high' box.
anyway, pataphysician1, i don't care what anyone likes or doesn't like. i was just commenting that the reasoning was weak. as far as your use of the term 'something to say', why not say wasn't very innovative or original? that's much clearer phrasing.
any way you phrase it, you're wrong. every song on 'adore' is a demonstration of tremendous lyrical talent. sure, some pumpkins songs ('today', most of 'gish', etc.) aren't anything to get excited over lyrically. but it's not like 'something against you', 'la la love you' or 'cecilia ann' (that's a joke, for the humor impaired) are lyircal triumphs. again i say, so what? that's ridiculous criteria to determine quality of a song over.
ps - i find that people with basically good taste in music who don't like the pumpkins are trying to take it too seriously. i mean, look at led zeppelin. indisputably great stuff, but were the lyrics always great? no. was every single song completely innovative? no. so what? it's still amazing. |

Dude, haven't you heard? You're required to paraphrase Rand and Wittgenstein and Nietzche in lyrical prose or else you're considered a fucking paltry poet.

wow ebb, your "i am right and you are wrong" argument makes everything very clear. now i understand the objective reason why Smashing Pumpkins are so brilliant.
personally i'm in the camp who feels they peaked with Siamese Dream. then they kind of lost me after that. i mean, "despite all my rage i am still like a rat in a cage".. that sounds like a poem written by an alienated 8th grader. and all that "freaks and gouls" stuff. that's verging on Ozzy-level lyric-writing. "make a joke / and i will sigh / and you will laugh / and i will cry"
i actually like the pumpkins quite a bit.. and i think Siamese Dream is fantastic. but i just don't know if i'd say everything he does is a demonstration of tremendous lyric-writing prowess or anything.
and it's obvious that he just wants to be like Frank. look at his fucking haircut! :)

Zwan fucking sucks. Hey Billy, turn off that flanger for the chorus at least. Zwan sounds nothing like the Pumpkins and thank god because anything they pressed after Mellon Collie is a waste of plastic. Billy should stop fucking around, dust off his polyester shirts, grow his hair back, plug his old Strat through the Muff and bring his music back to where it was in 94. At this point, he's an embarrassment to what good music was in the 90s. I liken him to the Chili Peppers in the One Hot Minute phase. Maybe he should start a side project with Dave Navarro on guitar, Courtney Love on bass and Beck on drums. They can be called "Feces - Can You Smell the Music?" |

did you think that maybe it's supposed to express that same angsty frustration that the 8th grader is trying to write about? not that it matters to you, but it's 'still *just* a rat in a cage'.
it's not 'i am right, you are wrong' it's 'i am right, you are wrong and your reasons for being wrong suck.' i'm ripping on your reasoning for your opinion. i went over this before, captain smartypants. |

I couldn't agree more. Listen to Chavez. Matt Sweeny is second fiddle to no one. Though he loved to rock and roll, he decided to play behind Billy. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Mr. Black, but I get really bored with singers who sound very similar from song to song. I guess not every artist can have the kind of vocal range possessed by Frank. |

I myself find it surprising that anyone who was in Slint would want to collaborate with THE Billy Corgan. It's sorta analogous to that Bush/Steve Albini fiasco (though, to be fair, Razorblade Suitcase wasn't that bad). Also, I don't think anyone needs to have a reason for not going ga-ga over everything (or even anything) the Pumpkins did.
What's yo fav Chavez album, guys? |

no, i don't. i think it's just poor songwriting.

ah, now it's clear to me. before i just thought you were right and everyone else was wrong.. now i see that, in fact, actually, you are right and everyone else is wrong .. because they're wrong.
it makes more sense now. consider me converted, Mr. right one. (can i call you righty?)
by the way, it was speedy_m who you originally trimuphed over with your indomitable, argument-crushing rightness, not me.. (i was just admiring from afar).. so it wasn't actually my opinion that you were ripping into so effectively. (but that doesn't detract from the impressiveness of the ripping)...
in any case, i'll shut up now.. i'm just busting your balls Ebb.

To the people of this board,
a couple of days ago something similair happened in the ''Here Comes Your Man''-section. The topic (Pixies Ripp off Trivia) was about Smashing Pumpkins ripping off Pixies
Of course this topic was based on opinions Or dear friend Ebb (who seems a huge fan of Billy Corgan/Smashing Pumpkins), attacked everybody who didn't agree with him. Same seems to happen here.
When it comes to the Pumpkins, Ebb is unreasonable, but I think we can't blame him. He just likes the band, and gets upset when somebody doesn't. I guess we all lose are temper when MTV says Kurt Cobain invented Grunge-dynamics.
But, Ebb seems to have this common feeling a bit too strong. I think you can't say people reasonings/opinions suck, on a forum where people are supposed to give their opinions (in all freedom)
Suggestions for this problem:
-We'll never mention Billy Corgan/Smashing Pumpkins again
or
-We won't reply on any Ebb/Smashing/Corgan-related post
or
and this is my favourite
-We start a Smashing Pumpkins-section, where we put an ''I hate Zwan'' or ''Billy Corgan sucks'' topic on everyday, and then laugh at how mad Ebb gets.....
seriously,
this board needs some counseling
(excuse me for my bad english)

I'd have to say Ride the Fader is my favorite Chavez album, though the first one is excellent as well. I also really enjoy the Pentagram Ring EP, many tasty treats to be found there. Honestly, Matt, just make your own music. Forget Billy's shadow, and reform Chavez, and stay all day, if you want to. |
