Lived in Europe for a bit...
Impressed with the following cities: Stockholm, Copenhagen, Sienna, Prague, Ceske Kromlove (went to Prague when traveling a couple years ago last trip couldn't leave Krumlov for a month), Geneva, Interlaken and St. Sabastian.
Have yet to go to Hungry or Poland. Would also love to see the Baltic states and parts of Russia. When living in Europe I stayed in London for about 8 months... crazy but great city which takes a lot of getting use to... just crazy diverse and expensive and fun.
Looking to travel again but I am grounded for a while... would like to do Asia and would prolly hook up with some of the Aussies I met in London...
Bazza, would also like to go to Ireland and visit the home land one day as well..

barry,
some of my best vacation photos are posted on my website (including selections from the 18 rolls i took during 10 days in scotland two years ago!)
also included are photos from ireland, italy, and various locations throughout the continental united states and canada! each one of these trips has been amazing - for different reasons. my wife and i are returning to ireland in june for our 10th wedding anniversary.

Scotland has the most amazing landscapes I've ever seen. It beats everything. Pity the weather is so shitty there.

In the summer of 2000 my father and I went on a two week trip to Sienna, in Tuscany. We were also joined by 14 family friends, and we stayed in a huge villa with lavendar bushes and amazing views. It was the time of the Palio (a medieval horse race thay have in Sienna twice a year) and we experienced that and all the excitement around it. It was lovely and hot and as we all still say "the best vacation ever". |

I've had a wicked time in Eastern Europe, Mexico, and France. But I figured that's it's about time I get to know my own bit of the planet. I was thinking the Eastern U.S. and Canadian seaboard. I wonder if it's worth the cash, or should I just go live like a king in South America?

Bazza, I'd agree with you that Krakow is amazing. I went there 10 years ago for my cousins wedding and had 6 days of getting lashed and seeing the sites. Did you go to Zakopane? Thats a pretty cool place nearly in the mountains...
China is pretty good as well, if you go to the nice places you'll see nothing like it in the world. I went to a place called Lu Shan, in Jaingxi province back in May... it is not supposed to be one of the nicest attractions in China, but to me it was out of this world. If thats not supposed to be anything special then I'd love to see the sights which are deemed as beautiful.
Hibobumsteak..... why don't you go out and rob a bank, then you'll get your wish for free in some penitentiary....

I haven't been back to Krakow, but when I went back to England a few months ago I was toying with the idea of travelling around Europe (as my girlfriend came with me and seeing as she is Chinese she doesn't get the opportunity to travel much), with the aim of travelling to Krakow again. I have family there as I am half Polish so it would be easy for accomodation and could do it on the cheap. Unfortunately it didn't materialise. But if you ever go again then make sure you go to Zakopane, as it trully is beautiful.... apart from the cable car ride which quite frankly scared the fuck out of me....
Did you go to Auschwitz?? I really wanted to go, but my relatives wouldn't let me at the time. I don't know why I wanted to go, but I kick myself for not going...
We went to Egypt a month or so ago, for a week. We stayed near Taba on the Red Sea. We wanted to go to Luxor and Cairo, but 1) didn't have enough time, and 2) we were nearly thrown out of the country as my girlfriend didn't have a visa (the bastard travel agent told us when we booked the holiday 3 days before we flew that she'd have no problem getting a visa... the lying fuckers)... it was a case of losing all of our money, me going alone and leaving my girlfriend at home with my parents, or saying fuck it and taking the risk of being sent back home.... the fuck it option worked well in the end, I'm glad we went but obviously we would hve loved to see the Pyramids. From where we were staying we could see Israel, Jordan and Saudi... it was beautiful.
This is gettin a little long.... but I'd have to say that Ive never been to Scotland... I'd love to go though as I love the Scots and have heard that the sights there are breathtaking. Also a tour of Ireland appeals to me, as the Irish are the friendliest people Ive ever met, the westside is suposed to be beautiful, and also I love Guiness (trying to get a decent pint of Guiness here in the Jing is impossible.... there is more chance of Gary Glitter selling out a world comeback tour than getting a decent pint... the shit pints are 6 or 7 quid each so its not even worth it). Ive been to Dublin, but that was to see U2 at Slaine Castle and to go on the piss for 6 days... I wouldn't like to say that Ive seen Ireland properly.
Thats all I guess...

Not quite all....
If anyone is thinking of doing the Far East then they should seriously consider China, as it is a great place to visit. Here you can trully live like a king (or Queen if you are a woman)... Chinese food is horrendously cheap, and gorgeous (its actually cheaper to eat in a restarant than to cook at home), Chinese beer is horrendously cheap (and not too bad either) and the standard of life for westerners is amazing. All of the attractions around Beijing are cheap as well, and there is loads to do here. I went on an epic all day drinking session yesterday, I was drinking for 12 hours and only spent about 15 quid.... thats how cheap it is.
The people here are great too, Chinese and Ex pats, its a really friendly environment. Plus if you live here you can make good money. I work 30 hours a week teaching, get paid about 750 pounds a month, and can save about 400 pounds.... thats with paying for rent (which is 50 quid a month) and having one or two piss ups a week.
Travelling around China is also cheap as well, if you do it via the sleeper trains. I'm considering settling down here, if I can get myself a career type job, as his place is a much better lifestyle than Britain, hardly any rain, and very hot in the summer.
If any of you are ever considering coming to Beijing then feel free to drop me an email, as I'd be happy to meet up and show you the city.... I guarantee that once you get her, you won't want to leave.
My girlfriends just gone out so I can safely write that there are alot of cracking Chinese birds as well, I mean some are stunning... and they like Western people too....
The only bad thing I would say about Beijing is that if you are a westerner then you're gonna get the shits real bad as you'll want to try out weird types of food like dog, snake, donkey etc etc... This is not so bad if you are at home (and you have the comfort of the 'throne'), but if you are outside then your only chance of relief is to visit a public toilet (which consists of a whole in the floor). This is perilous at the best of time but especially if you have had a skinfull of beer when you get caught short. The Chinese have got the squat down to a T, but westerners have a lot of trouble, and for that matter it ain't a pleasant experience. Sorry to be crude, but it wouldn't be right to not point out a small negative aspect of China.
Man, I like this forum topic...

I will be in Florence, Italy for one week and I need the skinny on what to do and what not to do. I plan on eating lots of cheese and walking around in a wine/grappa daze... so, I need help. Besides the great art and atmosphere, is there anything really outstanding to experience?

Well, staring is one thing. What is extra fun is that I'm going with my ex.. and I've heard about the allure of them Eyetalyun gents. Maybe I should pick up a leather jacket when I get there and practice my eyebrow moves.

hobo, Florence is beautiful.. aside from all the obvious historical attractions, there are some great resturants.. Italian food being the best in the world and all..
the only drag is there isn't much nightlife.. you've got to really look for it. there are one or two Irish pubs where all the ex-pats hang out.. not that you want to go to Italy and hang out with other Brits and American people... but if you like going out at night, like, after 9 o'clock, and drinking beer in a bar (as i've been known to like to do), it ain't happening unless you go to one of those. there's a cool place called Bump in the older part. i'll try to remember more..
oh yeah, and the Italian women.
do you have your place lined up? because i can recommend a few places (having stayed there a few times).

I'll be staying with a good friend and his wife who live in "the old part" of town. He's been there for about a year, so I figure he'll know plenty of places to drink at night (I have no intention of drinking ANY beer while there), so he'll be able to line me up with all his seedy hangouts and speak for me. I want to know what really worth doing during the day... rent a scooter?... try to visit Chianti?... stay drunk and full of cheese? I suppose I'll just have to wing it...

Last year I spent some time in the West Bank and Gaza. It was breathtaking. The architecture still amazes me to this day. And all the tanks, don't get me started on the tanks. I got to throw some rocks at the tanks with these Palestinian teenagers. They called me il ishad al huhbar, which means teenager of the year. I guess they called me that because I hit the most tanks. |

When I was in Egypt a few months ago we had the opportunity to go to Israel, the reason why we couldn't go was because of my girlfriends visa problems... had that not been a problem then I wouldn't have minded going for a day or two.... dodging the bullets and avoiding the buses. Its supposed to be a really nice place, if you take away the dangers. We would have gone to Tel Aviv, and to King Herods mountain fortress... it kind of pisses me off that the Chinese get a raw deal when it comes to leaving their country. Saying that, a Israeli entrance stamp on your passport will guarantee you non entry to the rest of the arab countries.
What was West Bank and Gaza like??? How does it compare to what you see in the media???

Has anyone ever been to Vietnam??? My girlfriend and I are thinking of going there in August... maybe spending a week in Yunnan Province (which borders with the Nam), and then a week in the Nam. If anyone has been there then could recommend the best places to go.
Obviously, I'll have to view First Blood Part 2 before I go to get myself in the mood for action.

I did get out to auschwitz 1 and also 2 - didnt enjoy it but glad i went. sounds strange but anyone who goes there will probably say the same thing. i felt the same when i went to sachsenhausen (outside berlin) last year too. strange places... birkenhau (auscwitz 2) is very upsetting - and anything anyone says about no birds or insects is very true.
as for going to scotland - well being irish we have a close bond. i loved the country and the scots are great. scottish women are nice too :o) anyone thinking of going should go - edinburgh is amazing - skye is fantastic and the highlands are sweet. i would be biased about saying how good ireland is - but killarney and kerry are beautiful and yes - we are a friendly bunch :o)
thanks for the egypt info. nice one. barry
