Posted - 01/18/2005 : 07:27:04 My sister bought this movie and I'd heard some good and some bad things. So I watched it last night.
Without betraying my own feelings on the movie, was there anyone out there that didn't think it was worthy of being highly placed on a list of 2004's worst movies?

Posted - 01/19/2005 : 11:21:55 I thought Napolean Dynamite was pretty funny. However, the hype is WAY too much for it to live up to. I can't quite figure out the mass appeal of the movie, but I do like the film. With how slow and lifeless it can be, I'm surprised how all sorts of different folks enjoy it. Then again, I guess Will Ferrell can be slow and lifeless and a lot of people like him (though I don't find him funny at all).

Posted - 01/19/2005 : 10:43:50 My opinion was the movie was horrible. Could barely sit through it when my cousin and I watched it Saturday night in fact I think we spent longer than the playing time of the movie discussing how absolutely shit movie was after the credits rolled. I really can't see the appeal at all, and I think that when someone mentioned that this movie was painting geeks as inbred, etc is at least partially true. It does kind of herald a new movie form at least I haven't seen much of geeksploitation.

i always wondered if he was a fan. figured he must be since he has such excellent taste in music. he should do a movie and have Pixies songs be the main theme (like Bowie was for LIFE AQUATIC), a la the impossible-to-find ALBERT SOUFRE
great article!

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 20:03:19 Wes Anderson is a fan of the Pixies, or at least he listens to 'em in his car...
Also, Frank said he heard Eliott Smith's "Needle In the Hay" from the Royal Tenenbaum's soundtrack and it made him cry...

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 19:38:56 I can understand why Napoleon's appeal may elude some. My suggestion is, watch it again. It's the goofiness that makes it funny. I saw it four times in the theatre and now own it on video.

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 12:56:18 I've seen Napoleon on two seperate occasions. The first time was in a theater full of friends of mine, last summer. The second time I saw it was by myself at home last week. The first time viewing it, I thought it was genius, hysterical. The second time, I was very disapointed. I believe that when watching a film like Napoleon, you have to be in the right envirnoment to enjoy yourself. The whole film is goofy, as Brian said, and people are less likely to act goofy (or perhaphs laugh at goofy characters) when they are by themselves, or just in the wrong place. Another thing is that when I saw it, I hadn't heard any of the hype, and was expecting a poor film. By being surprised by its entertainment, Napoloen was able to impress me more. Perhaps had I heard its praises prior to viewing, I would have expected more. By entering the theater with low expectations, I was more willing to grant the film a positive review.
As far as Wes goes, I'm a big fan, although not to the extent that some are. I'd have to say that Rushmore tops my list of Anderson films, followed by TRT.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 12:13:07 I really enjoy Wes Anderson's stuff too (I did enjoy Life Aquatic, just not as much as earlier stuff by his - I felt like he maybe lost some crucial character development time for gags or style).
The line Jen quoted from Pedro was one of the two lines I laughed out loud at.
I agree also with Jose, Ocean's 12 was a surprising treat. Not great, but I was expecting it to be awful and it was actually pretty enjoyable. I may have to watch Ocean's 11 again sometime when it's not 4 AM and I fall asleep through the middle.

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 11:59:04 i agree jose. though i'm not as thrilled with his mainstream efforts lately. . what's cool about him is that, even though he makes a film like OCEANS 12, next time around he'll make some small, experimental personal film. he does both.
i actually met his editor once, who worked on the THE LIMEY (very cute by the way). THE LIMEY is one film that truly does use editing in some creative ways. in a very self-conscious way. . i love that film

i don't see the SCHIZOPOLIS comparison. i thought that was an interesting film, but got tiresome. i respect for Stephen Soderberg for making it. to me SCHIZOPOLIS was doing something completely different than Wes Anderson

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 11:40:36 Yeah, Pedro did have some good lines.
"Summer Wheatly? How the heck are you gonna do that? Pedro: Build her a cake or something."
floop, maybe that's why I didn't like it very much. Besides it getting talked up so much it could never live up to the hype, I haven't enjoyed any Wes Anderson movies, not after "Bottle Rocket". Can't figure what I'm missing there, I'm just a weirdo I guess. I think Schizopolis did the Wes Anderson thing better than he ever has. Nose army.

Posted - 01/18/2005 : 11:29:18 i didn't really see it the same way. i thought it was just trying too hard to be quirky and have odd characters, at the expense of the film. also, a little too Wes Anderson deriviative.
that said, it was refreshing to watch. when so many films lack any originality, it's nice to see someone at least trying to do something different. not to mention on a shoestring budget.
and you gotta love Pedro, c'mon!
