My sister bought this movie and I'd heard some good and some bad things. So I watched it last night.
Without betraying my own feelings on the movie, was there anyone out there that didn't think it was worthy of being highly placed on a list of 2004's worst movies?

i really enjoyed it - i thought it was goofy as hell, but a lot of fun and really funny...and i'll be damned if someone in my group of friends doesn't say 'GOSH' every 2 seconds

I thought it was really funny. I hear ya Brian, my son now says gosh every 2 seconds and you're acting like a frickin idiot. (not to me mind you;)
The actor was on Mad TV on Saturday night as well.

Some really funny stuff, but overall over-rated.
For me, the best scene was the big dance number during the election speech. It had enough energy to make me forget that I had been a little bored with the movie before that.
Good, but not great.

Hmm, I guess I'm mostly alone then. I found the movie dull, I hated ALL the characters except maybe Pedro who I just had no reason to like but didn't dislike. The dance number was entertaining, but the rest of the movie at best made me smirk/smile and generally found me quite bored. I didn't find anything amusing about a catch phrase repeated ad nauseum, I guess, nor about the delivery of the said catch phrases. But to each his own.
I think I laughed out loud twice during the movie.
I wanted it to be funny, I did, but I just found it utterly devoid of comedy or interest. And I usually find most things funny.

NP was the second time we got suckered into renting an ass-horrible movie, sorry to say. The first was "Better Luck Tomorrow". We heard great reviews about both, from people and places we thought we could trust more than the mainstream press, especially about NP. Both were produced by MTV, and showed it.
What bothered me most about NP was that it revelled in depicting "geeks" as inbred morons, while couching it as kitschy laugh-at-ourselves humor. There were a few moments of situational comedy, but they were so self-concious they fell flat after the initial automatic-response. ...like the guy shooting the cow in front of the school bus. HA! zzzzzzzzzzzz
Napoleon Dynamite = MTV trying to get "geek cred" by playing frat-boy pranks on "geeks" while they're sleeping and making them laugh at themselves when they wake up so they can finally be accepted.

Being as out of the loop as I am, I didn't hear much about it before it came out, maybe that makes a difference.

i wasn't aware that it was getting panned. it seems to be a critics favorite.
i thought it was a fun film, and impressive for a first-time filmmaker who had hardly any money to make it. but i didn't think it was as good as some people thought it was..

i didn't really see it the same way. i thought it was just trying too hard to be quirky and have odd characters, at the expense of the film. also, a little too Wes Anderson deriviative.
that said, it was refreshing to watch. when so many films lack any originality, it's nice to see someone at least trying to do something different. not to mention on a shoestring budget.
and you gotta love Pedro, c'mon!

Yeah, Pedro did have some good lines.
"Summer Wheatly? How the heck are you gonna do that? Pedro: Build her a cake or something."
floop, maybe that's why I didn't like it very much. Besides it getting talked up so much it could never live up to the hype, I haven't enjoyed any Wes Anderson movies, not after "Bottle Rocket". Can't figure what I'm missing there, I'm just a weirdo I guess. I think Schizopolis did the Wes Anderson thing better than he ever has. Nose army.

i'm a Wes fan so i don't know what to say.. RUSHMORE is one of my favorite films of all time. though he hasn't topped that since.
i don't see the SCHIZOPOLIS comparison. i thought that was an interesting film, but got tiresome. i respect for Stephen Soderberg for making it. to me SCHIZOPOLIS was doing something completely different than Wes Anderson

Hmm, you're probably right, because I obviously don't get Anderson. I wish I did. Maybe a new thread is spawning.

not to get too off topic, but soderberg is a god among men.
well, he's a damn fine filmmaker, at least. has anyone seen the limey? he's an editing genius.

i agree jose. though i'm not as thrilled with his mainstream efforts lately. . what's cool about him is that, even though he makes a film like OCEANS 12, next time around he'll make some small, experimental personal film. he does both.
i actually met his editor once, who worked on the THE LIMEY (very cute by the way). THE LIMEY is one film that truly does use editing in some creative ways. in a very self-conscious way. . i love that film

even with soderberg's mainstream films, they're a joy to look at. his touch and catherine zeta-jones made ocean's 12 very nice to watch.

I really enjoy Wes Anderson's stuff too (I did enjoy Life Aquatic, just not as much as earlier stuff by his - I felt like he maybe lost some crucial character development time for gags or style).
The line Jen quoted from Pedro was one of the two lines I laughed out loud at.
I agree also with Jose, Ocean's 12 was a surprising treat. Not great, but I was expecting it to be awful and it was actually pretty enjoyable. I may have to watch Ocean's 11 again sometime when it's not 4 AM and I fall asleep through the middle.

I've seen Napoleon on two seperate occasions. The first time was in a theater full of friends of mine, last summer. The second time I saw it was by myself at home last week. The first time viewing it, I thought it was genius, hysterical. The second time, I was very disapointed. I believe that when watching a film like Napoleon, you have to be in the right envirnoment to enjoy yourself. The whole film is goofy, as Brian said, and people are less likely to act goofy (or perhaphs laugh at goofy characters) when they are by themselves, or just in the wrong place. Another thing is that when I saw it, I hadn't heard any of the hype, and was expecting a poor film. By being surprised by its entertainment, Napoloen was able to impress me more. Perhaps had I heard its praises prior to viewing, I would have expected more. By entering the theater with low expectations, I was more willing to grant the film a positive review.
As far as Wes goes, I'm a big fan, although not to the extent that some are. I'd have to say that Rushmore tops my list of Anderson films, followed by TRT.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

The Royal Tenebaums is by far my favorite Wes Anderson film, but i love all of them - i'd say it goes Royal-Rushmore-Bottle Rocket-Life Aquatic

I can understand why Napoleon's appeal may elude some. My suggestion is, watch it again. It's the goofiness that makes it funny. I saw it four times in the theatre and now own it on video.

Yeah, 'cause "antrhopologists" are really gonna' take the word of someone who can't spell the title of their job or the movie correctly.
Alright, I admit it, I'm just showboating for those anthropologists. Sorry, K! :)

I can see it their report now-- Frank Black was a woshiped diety. The birth of his first born was unparalled. A certain Pixies Mania stuck in 2004. Curry, as well as beautiful men and women were revered my many. |
