Posted - 03/14/2006 : 07:06:34 It turns out that I have deleted what was one of the most informative threads on this site without a clue that I had done so. You see, I was deleting my post which was at the top of the page and the button was therefore right next to the delete thread button. In any case, obviously I feel horrible about doing so, but perhaps we can reconstruct part of it. I've got page 8 from Google, if anyone is able to dig out other pages, I'll put them in order.

oddball It is so great to have a concrete name for referring to the second nashville album. I wonder what the inspiration behind this title could be. Any thoughts?
Erik
VoVat Maybe it was named after the kind of pizza Frank was eating during the recording sessions.
fbc A song of the same name maybe?

fbc we best redesign the forum again, an italian theme me thinks
dayanara didn't we hear something about frank recording faure's sicilienne during these sessions? jon?
maybe that's too far a stretch.

fbc (those pics are never lost on me floop, potential cover art for sure)
I knew we had two records to look forward too, but having the name of the second for some reason makes it seem all the more exciting (to me, anyway). This record has all of a sudden come to life, no more Nashville 2, we got 'The Sicilian'.

"Seems like The man from Brooklyn called Reid Paley will be even more involved in music from frank black in the future. They have collaborated on another 6 songs that frank already recorded in Nashville for the next one"
so that's 7 so far, not including the tracks left off HC.

Oh yeah Dayanara, you cracked the code.
What FBC said! "You The Girl as Frank be The Man"!!!
And, thanks again for being "on guard" last night, we were well represented!
VoVat You know, that pizza that Floop posted looks awfully tasty.
IceCream I agree with VoVat. I hope some record company releases this album on vinyl. The front cover could be that picture of the pizza Floop posted. I'm imagining a gatefold jacket. There would, of course, be a large picture of Monica as well.
shineoftheever wierd, i feel hungry and intrigued, also filled with feelings of anticipation.

but she's Italian, which will fit in with the overall theme. c'mon.
mun chien Andalusia a bit of monica will fit everywhere, just pointing out that she has nothing to do with sicily. maria grazia cucinotta is a better example maybe being sicilian and all
1965 Has there been any leaks on what the track-listing may be for Sicilian? We've read it was likely to contain some or all of the five Honeycomb out-takes plus some FB/Reid Paley compositions, but what else and how many tracks, etc. Hopefully if JT is out there, we could maybe get a heads-up on what to expect... Please!
The Holiday Son And when will it be released?!? It still puzzles me that during a Pixies Reunion, Frank has so much trouble releasing albums. I'm sure if it said "Pixies" on them it would already be on presale...
VoVat Maybe it could be billed as "Pixies Minus Three."
Daisy Girl This is great news!! I can't eat sicillan pizzas which I love, so I will have a wonderful surrogate... a dish for my ears
VoVat You're going to eat pizza with your ears? How will you chew it?
Jason HONEYCOMB is Frank's 7th album in 5 years (I'm counting ODDBALLS). That's more than most bands put out in twice that time. It doesn't sound to me like he's having problems getting albums released.
We don't know when THE SICILIAN is being released because HONEYCOMB hasn't even come out yet. HONEYCOMB is what the record label is most concerned with now.
dayanara january 06, according to the Man. two albums in 6 months, i'm certainly not complaining.
OldManInaCoffeeCan Hell no, you ain't gonna hear any whining from this uber fan. I've used this time to bone up on The Man's B-sides, and I bought that I-tunes "Show Me Your Tears" EP, so, I've been about as happy as a pig in shit!
Jason And some of us haven't even heard HONEYCOMB yet.
Between still having HONEYCOMB to look forward to, hearing it for the first time on a nice official release with nice artwork, and not yet chomping at the bit for THE SICILIAN because HONEYCOMB isn't already "old" to us, I say us non-Soulseek-ers got the better deal.
billgoodman I just don't listen to honeycomb everyday. I know the songs, I know the leaked version, but I don't over do it, otherwise I spoil it too much. Same with the newest Robert Pollard
vilainde Know what I did? I downloaded HC, listened to it a couple of times and shelved it until the official album is released. So I've heard the songs, I know they're great, but they're not old to me and I'm eagerly waiting for the real album to come out. To be honest, everyday I feel the urge to dig up the leaked version and listen to it but I've been strong until now. I must have masochistic tendencies.
Denis
VoVat I haven't heard Honeycomb yet. I'm being good, and waiting until Christmas to open my presents.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.
benji i too haven't heard honeycomb...it spoils the fun i think. when's it released again?
Page Two
Erebus Me too. No pre-release listening for me, this time or previously. Frankly, I been wallowing in downloaded Pixies and Frank bootlegs, so much so that I sometimes feel guilty for not spending more time listening to my store bought discs.
Fbc BUMP!
January 06? Bring it on!
Kelladwella Is there a release date already for this? I must have missed that.
Fbc not that i know of. but super Daya on the previous page mentioned January next year. and she knows her stuff.
Jontiven The Sicilian will be available early next year, but we have to make sure there is enough room in the bins for it. So make sure there are no spare copies of HONEYCOMB lying around your local record store, please buy them up if you have to.
Are any of you people familiar with the Americana Convention here in Nashville? They did make an announcement yesterday.
bye, Jon Tiven
Frog in the Sand If I buy 30 copies of Honeycomb, will you divulge the Sicilian's tracklist ?
(PS: I already bought 3 + ordered the Japanese version)

Well, Sir Jon, that was a helluva clue, it didn't take fbc long to solve the riddle, did it!
Hey Sir Jon, I'm wondering, will The Boss be performing at night in one of the venues that will be selling individual tickets for that night's performance($10,$20,$30,...), OR will The Boss be performing/appearing at some of the events which require the $250 registration fee? Certainly, you get a lot for the $250 over the 3 day period, however, can you tell me if I could see all of The Boss' performances / appearances by just buying tickets to whichever one of the three nights The Boss will be playing at either the Basement, Station Inn, Mercy Lounge or Cannery Ballroom?
Llamadance OldMan's is bigger than mine
OldManInaCoffeeCan
That's OK Llamadance, don't feel bad, mine is extraordinarily big, or at least that's what I've always been told, so don't feel like yours has to be as big as mine. From what I can see, yours looks nice and I'm sure it's adequate. So try not to get hung on the size thing.
(Ha!, Sorry, I just couldn't resist that pitch that you served up for me, Llamadance, thanks, I owe you one!)
Llamadance
No problems, if you keep hitting home runs OldMan, I'll keep pitching.

Hey Sir Jon, I meant to ask you, is there gonna be a "Honeycomb" booth at the conference? It looks like a good deal for $350. I've got a friend of mine looking into getting one, the price includes the $250 registration fee for the conference and you get one extra booth worker pass (that would be me).
Jontiven I don't have any details yet and when I do and get the OK from Mr. Big to divulge, you know I will.
Now I've got a favor to ask of you. Any of you. All of you. As you are my friends.
I encourage all of you to post your reviews of HONEYCOMB on Amazon.com. The more the merrier. You are our street teamers.

OldManInaCoffeeCan Thanks Jon, I know you will.
Now to the task at hand, reviews of HONEYCOMB on Amazon.com. I'll try to squeeze something coherent out of my pea-size brain tomorrow, but there are far better pensmen here than I [ahem: Kathryn, et al...] and many of the music intelligentsia [ahem: Broken Face, Peter Radiator, fbc, et al,...] are members here at fb.net, so I'm sure we can count on them!
Fbc the word is always being spread
Oldman, i never saw Frank listed in that Americana link. My eyes. So bad. thanks for pointing that out.

Alrighty. i just put in a quick review. there's 6 in so far. they're all pretty good. this one cracked me up "Holy cow I just bought an album that Jon Tiven produced and I like it. The world must be coming to an end., July 20, 2005" i hope you think that's funny too Jon.(that wasn't my review)
by the way, the production sounds great on honeycomb!
Jontiven Thank you fu.
More reviews on Amazon, please, anyone?
bye, Jon Tiven
Frog in the Sand I'll post mine on Amazon.fr., if you don't mind :)
I'll give 4 stars out of 5 - IMO 'Violet' is weak and 'My Life...' is boring.
Billgoodman my life... boring? not the way I hear it (it's been a bit long though, but 'stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again' isn't short either...even singing the title takes 10 seconds)
Carl My life is boring!!
(Although there's never a dull moment on FB.Net!)
HeywoodJablome I do like Honeycomb, but why are people stressing so hard to buy multiple copies. I too love most everything he puts out but I've only ever bought two copies of the same recording when I liked the cd so much I wanted the vinyl too. Instead of buying ten of the same record there are many other "starving artists" that I would like to support too.
Fbc because we want a tour (please Frank!)
Nothing Catholic on the horizon. But then again. What does that mean. I mean. Horizon in terms of real life - frnck blck
Daisy Girl Jon,
Any chances the Sicilian will be leaked to fans similar to the way HC was leaked? I thought that was so cool!
Thanks!
Billgoodman like Jon leaked it himself...
still nice question

you're right billgoodman... well does ANYONE else besides Jon know if it will be leaked? Hint, hint.
The cool thing is that the ones of us that do have the leaked HC version do have several songs that it looks like will be on the Sicillian anyway.
Daisy Girl Here's my Amazon Review... for some reason I thought my Target one would make it to Amazon... b/c they looked connected... anyway for what it's worth....
"Close your eyes and think of the albums that made you cut class and run to the record store so you could be the first one in your school with a copy. You were driven like the wind and that gut instinct that brings true love to the altar early.
When you had that album in your hand, you would piece through the lyrics and photos and credits, memorizing every detail.
When it was safe to go home you would run up to your room, shut the door, put on the album sit on your bed, crouched over the album. Taking hours to listen to each word, each cord, each beat until you absorbed it as much as possible into your core being.
I could count on one hand the albums that made me feel that way. It's been decades since I have felt that way. That is until a miracle of a masterpiece by Frank Black called Honeycomb.
Like a slice from a beehive that's been smoked out, Honeycomb is the sweetest slice of Americana. It's a nuvo version in the footsteps of the legendary singer-song writers that are the pillars of American music-- Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie and the like.
Yes, Frank Black has paid his dues with the legendary alt rock band the Pixies, Frank Black and the Catholics and a successful solo career. His work is loved and revered by myself and many others. With the bulk of his work, being a good 10 years or so ahead of music trends.
But for some reason, when the time is right and all the planets allign-- you get a miracle and this one is called Honeycomb.
Honeycomb is a beautiful trip with talented legendary musicians. Starting with Frank Black but including many music legands with experience recording with greats such as Dylan and Elvis. It's cosmic!
This album appeals to the core Frank Black fan as well as others new to the fold. It's mellow, it's thought provoking, its sweet, its sorrow and witty.
For something recorded in four days, it's perplexing how all the details of lyric, song and feeling mesh together to such a solid and beautiful piece of art.
This album is the first album in over a decade where I don't fast forward tracks, I just listen and enjoy and then hit repeat when its done.
You will not be disappointed. Let Honeycomb take you on an aural journey that you will never forget. "
Daisy Girl Just went and voted for all the reviews that gave it 5 stars. Hopefully that helps?
Fbc

you're so right. it's easy to forget through all the exposure what an achievement this is. nice review there, daisy girl.
I remembered this from another thread:
The second record---and I apologize if I leave anyone out because I'm doing this off the top of my head---has on guitars Lyle Workman, Steve Cropper, Duane Jarvis and myself; bass Bob Babbitt and Tom Petersson; keys Ian McLagan, Mark T. Jordan and Al Kooper; drums Levon Helm, Billy Block and Simon Kirke; backgrounds by Ellis Hooks, Rick Duvall, Bobby Bare Jr., Billy Swan and his two daughters Planet and Sierra. I played a little alto sax, Wayne Jackson from the Memphis Horns on trumpet (JT)
HeywoodJablome Lyle!
Also, did'nt I see something that said Lucinda Williams was involved as well?
Daisy Girl
why thank you FBC
Heywood, Lucinda Willams was not involved in HC.

HeywoodJablome Maybe I'm just excited because I'm going to see her soon. Anyhow, I'd like it to be true!

Four and a half months till the Sicilian!!!!!!!!! That's not long at all!!
fbc "Charles called me a month later to do another session, which will be out sometime early next year, and it's a very different record from Honeycomb. We cut all of the tracks initially in 24 hours, and I thought that was going to be the album, but now we're going in again soon so maybe it'll be two discs, I don't know. But that's another album, another story."
How lucky are we? More songs. Sweet beautiful songs. Gimme gimme gimme.

Don't let fbc's humility fool you, HeywoodJablome. He has been bestowed many titles, including the following:
Thread Starter Extraordinaire (just take a glance at the threads here at fb.net and most of the really quality threads were authored by fbc (formerly known as frank black conspiracy)
Guitar Man (his work and posts in the "Tabs & Musician Stuff" is unmatched)
Omni-Stupid Thread-Master (actually fbc is not OS TM, but he does exert much influence over OS TM)
FBC--- You rock. (a moniker bestowed upon him by Sir Jon Tiven, see http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14022)
And now, after reading my post, (sometimes fbc is taken for granted here by all of us and after a time-out or time away from here, his influence is recognized and appreciated) I would like to bestow another title on fbc:
fbc, The Omniscient (in all things Frank)!
fbc Oldman you forgot: swine. vulgar little maggot. worthless bag of filth. a putrescent mass. a walking vomit. a spineless little worm, a jerk, a cad, a weasel, a stench, a revulsion, a big suck on a sour lemon, a bleating foal, a curdled staggering mutant dwarf smeared richly with the effluvia and offal accompanying your alleged birth into this world. An insensate, blinking calf, meaningful to nobody, abandoned by the puke-drooling, giggling beasts who sired you and then killed themselfs in recognition of what they had done.
I take them all as compliments.
OldManInaCoffeeCan

Hey, and i'm finally pleased to meet you. at last.
Mr. fbc seems to be a very receptive and peacy guy. He has the typical enthusiasm you can find in true good admirers. Or at least he knows the subtle ways to convey this feeling without being agressive, sarcastic, cynical or irrelevant, which is a RARE quality in this forum. As far as I remember I never read a bad comment or free insult or passionate pointless remarks from him.
So yes, fbc is maybe the ideal fan we all have inside: usefull, positive and sharing with pleasure all his qualities.
Moreover, fbc, Mr hWolsky was pleased to notice that you enjoyed his pictures. He says 'thank' from where he is for he appreciates people who have good tastes and actually lives for them.

oh contraire! we arrived early.
I read in another thread FB is back working with Mr Tiven within a month. I'm hoping the work involves The Sicilian.
Work! Sounds like fun to me.

Any more news re Sicilian/Nashville II? Is there any speculation on the number of tracks yet? Still hoping for an early 2006 release anyway...

I don't know if these quotes will bear any relevance to the released Sicilian, but here's what's been said so far:
quote:
[Frank and Reid Paley] have collaborated on another 6 songs that frank already recorded in Nashville for the next one
quote: We did an adaptation of LE SICILIENNE OPUS 98 last night (or was it this morning?) in Nashville. Lyle did a nice job of figuring out that one for me.
And this isn't including the tracks left off Honeycomb.
quote:
We cut all of the tracks initially in 24 hours, and I thought that was going to be the album, but now we're going in again soon so maybe it'll be two discs, I don't know.
1965
Thanks for that! very comprehensive. I also read somewhere recently that Frank said "it [recording] wasn't finished yet..." So maybe we're still too early... work-in-progress, etc.

Yep. jon Tiven mentioned working with FB within a month. That was around a month ago I think. It's exciting to know there's a new record under 'Work In Progress'. Can't wait for more news.

oh i should mention that five of the songs were co-written by mr. reid paley.
The quote you mentioned was posted by another member, who I forget.
Jason Well we do know that Frank is (or was) in Nashville this past week...
Jontiven
9 new songs, a reunion of the HONEYCOMB crew (all three guitarists but only one drummer, Billy Block) in tow, plus Rich Gilbert on pedal steel and Jack Kidney on sax/harp.
Chances are many of these new tracks will be on the album, but as you know we have quite a bit in the can....only Frank Black knows for sure. But I can tell you this:
IT ROCKS!
Keep on prodding all your friends to buy HONEYCOMB....and remember that Xmas is just around the corner, and it makes a fine stocking stuffer.
bye for now, Jon Tiven
kathryn Nine new songs? Plus Rich Gilbert? Oh my!
Ziggy Crikey. It'll be quite an opus...
Page 8
OldManInACoffeeCan So, Jon, am I correct then with the 15 songs being recorded in October 2004 and then 9 songs recorded in September 2005?
I've always liked brown rice myself....
And now, I'm going to give something back to you...a dinning tip if you don't already know this one.
If you enjoy having rice and a variety of other dishes, say as one would at a chinese buffet, place the rice in the center of your plate and then you can place servings of the other dishes on the outside of your plate.
Jontiven That's close but not quite right.
We did 12 at Jack Clement's October 2004, 9 there in September of 2005, and we had three leftover from the HONEYCOMB sessions that we were considering. Right now, unfortunately, the three HONEYCOMB leftovers are out of the picture but you have every reason to believe that they, like the rest of these songs, will emerge at some appropriate occasion.
All of this subject to change on a moment's notice. I would guess that there will be bonus tracks somewhere in the release of this next record and PERHAPS some of the missing songs will make official appearances in that configuration. I would hope so.
bye, Jon Tiven
OldManInaCoffeeCan Hey thanks Sir Jon,
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!
Hey Jon, I've got a great idea, how 'bout the 12 days of Nashville 2...each day you could post an interesting tidbit concerning the Nashville recordings, you know, similar to the 12 days of Christmas, except you'd be giving 12 stories of The Man and his music...or not...just an idea...
Ok, here's another something for you,...this is for Halloween...when you carve your pumpkin and cut a hole out in the top around the stem so that you can place a candle down in the pumpkin, well next time cut a hole out on the bottom of the pumpkin and you can place the pumpkin over the candle and you don't have to burn your hands trying to get the candle down from the top, huh!
velvety One of those three leftovers from the Honeycomb sessions isn't 'Kiss my ring', is it? John, please tell us that 'Kiss my ring' will make the final cut!
Damn it, I just remembered that 'Where the wind is going' may also be left out!
But surely these two are the best of the best... right? Pretty please?
billgoodman Highway To Lowdown must be on the record. I've been pleading for this since the songs leaked the first time. It's one of the best Black-songs in years, and I simply want to see it released, maybe as an one-off single. Or build an EP round it, but don't make it a stupid b-side, it's too good for that. A HTL-less record wouldn't suck of course, I'm happy with everything you are happy with.
OldManInaCoffeeCan KISS MY RING, HIGHWAY TO LOWDOWN,"...one of the best Black-songs in years...."
Damn, I guess I should ask Santa Claus for that leaked, premastered version of Honeycomb, huh! [I had actually forgotten all about it]
Jontiven The three songs mentioned, along with "Sad Man's Song," made the long list but not the short list. Everything will eventually be released, it's just a question of when.
I agree those songs are terrific. I would have no problem with them being on the next release. But if you're making a 13 song record, something isn't going to make the cut. Believe me, the other nine or ten which are left in the can are absolute stunners as well.
bye, Jon
OldManInaCoffeeCan Hey Jon,
How 'bout Johnny Barleycorn, You Can't Crucify Yourself (It Takes Two), and of course the duet of Dirty Old Town with Marty, will those 3 will be on the next record?
I hope you've finished all of your Christmas shopping, I finished mine Friday.
Merry Christmas, OMIACC.
Jontiven Dear OMIACC,
Those three are on the shortlist, and in answer to the 2nd question, Santa's work is never done till Dec. 26th so it's off I go.
bye, Jon
spunXtain why look at it as a "13-Song record"?? I don't get it. Time on a CD is not an issue, they can run for over an hour. Look at "Teenager of the year" a 22 song masterpiece. My question is honestly, why cut ANYTHING out? What's wrong with a 22 track album? Us hardcore "Black Sheep" will love every song on it. Everyone else who's listening can just hit "Skip track" if they don't like it.
Got coffee, got donuts, got wasted..
billgoodman I think Jon and Frank really want this one to be perfect. A 13 song record, that flows, fits together perfectly and only has topnotch songs (although I doubt Frank can write a bad song).
VoVat True, and what Frank and Jon see as topnotch songs might not be what the rest of us see as such. That's the main issue I've always wondered about when people say they want only "the best" songs on an album.
quote: at least 2 of them are supposed to sound like James Taylor
Well, I've dug for fire, and I've loved your brain I've seen Sunday sunny mill valley groove days that I hoped would never end I've seen lonely days when I could not find my saint...
1965 I don't like albums that have 11 or 13 songs on them. I much prefer 10, 12, 14, etc. Just seems more balanced. Odd track totals have always left me thinking something was missing.
What was the Honeycomb out-take that totally missed out? Weren't there 5 songs from the original session/s: KISS MY RING, ALL AROUND THE WORLD/NEEDLE IN MY ARM, HWY TO LOWDOWN, SAD MAN'S SONG & WHERE THE WIND IS GOING.
Btw, is SAD MAN'S SONG the same as FARE THEE WELL? I always wanted to ask that question, but kept forgetting...
Broken Face yes, "Sad Man's Song" is the same as "Fare Thee Well"
i believe that "All Around the World" is now a Pixies song officially (played at multiple gigs)
and "Kiss My Ring" was recorded by someone else that Mr. Tiven was working with, so i assume that the FB version will be the 'demo' for that other recording
Personally, i'm glad we're getting an all new set of FB songs. If you really want those other tracks, they aren't too hard to find on the file sharing networks and whatnot. And, as Mr. Tiven said, i'm sure at some point this will all be officially released.
-Brian
VoVat I have to agree with 1965 about the even track numbers, but I think that's more a sign of an obsessive-compulsive personality than anything else.
velvety Here's to hoping that Frank changes his mind and includes 'Kiss my ring' in his next album. Or in the Pixies album. The song sounds more like it would fit right in his first two albums, actually, it shares a similar vibe with 'Two Spaces', very poppy and lots of weird chord changes. But please, don't make a b-side out of it. That would be like 'Announcement' all over again.
Grotesque That perpective of having a "best of the best" album is great. The problem is sometimes when you listen to a selection of songs too much you forget about the primal energy an simplicity of some and tend to prefer the deeper tunes. For exemple, some of BLD songs like "Jet black river", "Cheap Away Boy" or "Whispering Weeds" are really great but pushed in the shadows by the "stronger" tunes of this album. Even the extraordinary simple "Mexican Beans" -that never really made it on an album- sounds like a pop hit to me. That kind of song deserve attention too! (especially for the pixies) But it mustn't be placed after some kind of epic masterpiece Frank is now capable of.
By the way, Velvety, how did you listen to Kiss My Ring? Anothet Two Spaces, wow! And what else is cooking?
velvety Kiss My Ring was one of the songs that was recorded in the Honeycomb sessions, but was left out. I think they're easy to find on Soulseek. Try searching for 'Honeycomb'
Jason Well, gee, haven't many musical artistes come under lots of criticism for their "fill up the whole CD" ways?
I, as a Frank fanboy, would love it if every single unreleased song from these sessions was a part of this new album and it was a big 2 CD set. However, one must also consider that not every Frank fan is like that and for them, a more pared down release might be the more rewarding listen. (Maybe one might also consider the NEW listener.)
Ultimately I'm in favor of whatever Frank wants to do. If he thinks a 13 song set is best, I bow to his judgement.
On the other hand, I do think that many musicians - particularly very proflic ones, like Frank -- DON'T EVEN KNOW what their best material is.
Still it's his call and I trust him.
Hey, hopefully some singles come out with honest-to-gosh prev. unreleased b-sides on them.
Or maybe the unreleased songs will be reworked -- maybe improved, too? who knows! -- for future releases.
Frank does have a history of giving us big long albums from time to time and he has a history of pulling out old unreleased or under-the-radar tunes (see "Dog in the Sand", see "Velvety", see "Modern Age", see "I Will Run After You", etc.). This will happen again.
I say, be patient. If the songs are good, you WILL get to hear them eventually. In the meantime, there's a lot of good music out there and you haven't heard all of it (nobody has). Me, I have the patience of Job when it comes to getting hold of new music from even my most favorite artistes. That's just because I listen to so much music that I have lots and lots of it to occupy my time while waiting for new droplets of nectar from the high kings.
While waiting to hear what Frank has coming out or what he might hold back from us for awhile, get into Lee Hazlewood, get into Sparks, get into ELLIS HOOKS, get into old rockabilly records, get into Marvin Gaye, get into Billy Childish, get into The Hollies... get into, I don't know, whatever it is you're curious about that you haven't gotten around to hearing yet.
Grotesque "On the other hand, I do think that many musicians - particularly very proflic ones, like Frank -- DON'T EVEN KNOW what their best material is."
You're absolutly right, I remember Frank being VERY enthusiastic about the song "Planet of Sound" before the realease of Trompe le Monde, and when I first listened to it I thought "Hell, it is THAT song?". (I like it, of course, but Frank really meant it was the one at the top). The opposite thing for "Mexican Beans"... I First heard it live in 94 with Workman on guitar doing great "scratch guitar solos". Some kind of "country-rap" I thought that was the hell of a song, like the best Meat Puppets, then nothing for years, and then an accoustic version that's allright but I thought he would -of course- do his next single with it! (the same evening they played "Men In Black" and it sounded like a good unrealeased song, but not THAT good, less original). I wich I had taped mexican beans that day!
That is one thing about the gem songs: you have you record them properly, with some particular attention. So when you listen to it you feel some special adrenalin rise. Like the singles in the sixties. Like "good vibrations" or "you really got me" you know? The bands used to spend more time on the singles than on the rest of the albums. They knew it was THE good material, so they had to cut THE good version. But it surely must be a bit of a hellride to record that. Look Wilson and Davies: they were all washed up end of the sixties.
billgoodman I believe Davies/Kinks didn't really put that much time into You Really Got Me or any song around that time. They recorded live and let mistakes go on their record. The music is simply amazing so it doesn't matter. Wilson spend months on Good Vibrations, but he was spending more time on SMiLE after that, he never finished it until 37 years later as we all know. Pet Sounds is the same story, singles didn't really matter to him at that point, the album was the real deal. You are correct that before Pet Sounds, the musicscene was more single-based.
Wilson was washed up at the end of the sixties, but Davies? Don't know, I know lot's of people that are fan of the Kinks 70's records.
Jontiven A Christmas Message From The Producer
Here's the deal. We spent a lot of time, effort, and yes money making the current record. If we put out all 24 songs, I would venture to say that a lot of Frank Black fans would love it and then half of them would complain on the board about the five songs they thought were subpar that should have been left off the record.
As for the critics, ALL of them would say that there's a great album in there if you cherry-picked the best tracks. Now where it comes to controversy is what are the hot 13 songs on the record. Because I'm convinced that there are a few that are obviously uncontested that would be on everybody's top 5 list, but the performances of all 24 are of such a high level that my contention is that if you gave twenty people the twenty four tracks, you would get at least nineteen different records.
So this makes it difficult. However, Frank Black's longtime manager Ken Goes made it easy for us. Ken didn't like the idea of putting out 24 songs. He listened very hard to the record and chose his faves and said do what you like, but this is what I like.
Now Frank Black doesn't have to talk to me very much. And most of you he has some contact with, but limited. The press at large, hardly at all. But Ken Goes he has to talk to on a regular basis. He is his MANAGER. So he's got to have an answer for Ken.
We both listened to Ken's album. It was undeniably superb, we all talked and said that this was an album we all can get behind, and the deed was pretty much done.
If you have any complaints with the songs left off which you've already heard, Ken "I hate Kiss My Ring" Goes can answer those queries much better than the artist or myself. Rest assured that nothing will remain in the can very long, and if you've already heard it on soulseek or whatever then burn yourself a copy and that should suffice for now. We've done remixes on most of the songs from HONEYCOMB which didn't make the cut, and they are different from the mixes available but I cannot say whether one is better than the other.
I hope you all have a very Happy Holiday no matter what your denomination is. I will continue to try to keep you up to date with the album, and I appreciate your appreciation of my postings.
Much love, Jon Tiven
HeywoodJablome And we appreciate your appreciation of our appreciation.
Thanks for the update Jon & Happy Holidays as well.
1965 Can I be one the twenty people to get the twenty-four tracks please!
Thanks again for your insights JT. I'm sure the album will be great whatever version it will be. btw is there an official title yet?
FrankfanL Compliments of the season to all our friends at this site. Special thanks to Jon for his time and insights. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!!! (I'm a snake too...)
OldManInaCoffeeCan Yes, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
And Sir Jon, Thank you so much for your generosity throughout this year of 2005. Your insight and stories that you have so generously shared with us here at frankblack.net are much appreciated.
May we all continue to do all that we can to help those that need help, Amen.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a meaningful 2006.
billgoodman Ken 'I hate Kiss My Ring' Goes? Bill 'I love Highway To Lowdown'Goodman!
yeah, maybe a 13 song record is better! As long as the rest is going to be released, like you said zillion times before. Happy Holidays Jon!
Grotesque Anyway the good thing is that Frank is still so prolific. It seems it'll never turn out like Pete "maybe half a good song for next year" Townshend. I remember Black Francis saying "there is no such thing as inspiration", and I thought "Well, let's see in ten years." OK, he definitly kwew what he was talking about.
VoVat
quote:
As for the critics, ALL of them would say that there's a great album in there if you cherry-picked the best tracks.
And this is a concern because...?
I mean, I've known people to base their decisions on whether or not to see a movie on the opinions of movie critics, but I have yet to hear of anyone paying any attention whatsoever to a music critic.
Ziggy Always good to hear an update. A happy new year to all.
Grotesque "I have yet to hear of anyone paying any attention whatsoever to a music critic."
Other music critics perhaps?
VoVat That's true, but do any of them actually buy the albums?
Grotesque Well, in France at least I know they are obsessed about one thing: being hype. I worked one year as a freelance critic. It's fun to watch them. They act like gods having a chat on the top of olympus. Some are big gods, some are minor, and the minor gods allways want to anticipate what the big gods like. Free minds are not welcome in that kind of place, partly because there is not so much work available and everybody is frightened about being "out".
1965 All in good time I suppose, but hoping Jon could maybe fill in a few blanks like- 1.Expected eta in '06? 2.USA label? [assuming Cooking Vinyl for UK/Euro] 3.Album title? 4.What are the album's/KG's 13 tracks?
Thanks + Happy NY.
TheScooper yes, and I'm STILL curious about what we're in for--mainly in terms of volume. As in, loud distorted guitars or more of a classic rock feel.

Hey Sir Jon, I meant to ask you, is there gonna be a "Honeycomb" booth at the conference? It looks like a good deal for $350.

HeywoodJablome
Damn. You’re right fbc. Maybe one more copy would'nt hurt!

you're right billgoodman... well does ANYONE else besides Jon know if it will be leaked? Hint, hint.
The cool thing is that the ones of us that do have the leaked HC version do have several songs that it looks like will be on the Sicillian anyway.

Here's my Amazon Review... for some reason I thought my Target one would make it to Amazon... b/c they looked connected... anyway for what it's worth....
Hopefully that helps?

you're so right. it's easy to forget through all the exposure what an achievement this is. nice review there, daisy girl.

Cool!
Carl Honeycomb was rumoured to be a two-discer, it'd be cool if the next album ('The Sicilian'?) is!!

Am I the only one that doesn't know who you are fbc? Enlighten me por favor, you seem to have "the goods" as far as pertinent FB info.

That quote is taken from a recently posted Jon Tiven interview, I believe.

Hey, and i'm finally pleased to meet you. at last.

Bring to this man more fish! Put it down by his side!

fbc
i'll be the new ME baby!
ya don't play bass by any chance? Frank and I were after something a little funky.
Carl I'll have to take up the banjo or some other classic country instrument. Then, when I'm 70 odd, I can play back up on like a cool Honeycomb kinda cat! :D
OldManInaCoffeeCan
I remember reading here somewhere that when Levon Helm was asked to play on the Sicilian/Nashville 2 he stated that he didn't know who Frank Black was but his GRANDCHILDREN knew Frank and were big fans.
One Who Hath Swum
I hope he enjoyed his time with Frank.
I'm sure Frank did.

Any more news re Sicilian/Nashville II? Is there any speculation on the number of tracks yet? Still hoping for an early 2006 release anyway...
** I’m a snake oh yes I’m very smart **
fbc
** I’m a snake oh yes I’m very smart **
fbc
Yep. jon Tiven mentioned working with FB within a month.

It'll be quite an opus...

therewererumours I just love Richs look, so along with his steel guitair , this is shaping up brillantly.

Thanks for the post Jon, that is awesome news. Rich is back with the pedal steel. That makes for some great listening, plus i love the quote "It Rocks".The thought of Frank, Rich and the Honeycomb cats bashing out another great rocking record sure does make me excited.
billgoodman rich gilbert is such a fine guitar player and totally cool it's nice he's working with Frank again
so his the sicilian going to be a 2 disc afair or 1 with a bunch of b-sides or just 2 seperate records (both sessions)
billgoodman hey jon, could you possibly say if Levon Helm sings back up on the new songs? Don't know if he was present at the last sessions, but he was at the 24 hour session, right? I love Helm's voice on songs by The Band, it would be so great if he sang on a Frank Black record.
Jontiven Levon played but did not sing.
New album will most likely be culled from both sessions we did at the Cowboy Arms, and will be out early next year.
bye, Jon Tiven

thanks for the info, but . It's a pity that he did not sing, but I'm sure the record will have great backing vocals just like Honeycomb had.
Jontiven
As far as I know, labels are the same, but they don't tell me everything.
Backing vocals are by Ellis Hooks, Marty Brown, Bobby Bare Jr., Brooks Watson, Jack Clement, Buddy Miller, Billy Block, Spooner Oldham, Rick Duvall, Billy Swan, and Billy's daughters Sierra and Planet Swan.
Levon was still recovering from throat cancer at the time so singing was not an option.
bye, Jon Tiven
HeywoodJablome Yeah, if you hear Levon on the "Last Waltz" commentary he sounds real hoarse, you can't even tell it's him. Damn pity, his singing was awesome in that film.
TheScooper hey jon--
thanks for the info.
You said it rocked. I've been wondering what "kind" of rock we're talking about here. Rock like Pixies-esque off the wall hard rock? I'm assuming not, judging from the players. More of a classic rock sort of thing?

Jontiven When I say ROCK I mean ROCK R-O-C-K. Not like some faux contemporary ROCK but ROCK like in the ROCK that maybe started with Louis Jordan and continued through Chuck Berry and then we had The Beatles, Stones Them and Kinks, Dylan of course and then Creedence and then Led Zep and Sex Pistols, Clash, Pixies, whatever---there is a thread that uptempo popular and sometimes unpopular music carried that was called ROCK. And there aren't a whole lot of people capable of bringing it off in an authentic, unique way. Some people like to say ROCK is dead, but that cannot be the case. I have heard it breathing.
I hope that answers the question.
bye, Jon Tiven
dayanara did honeycomb ROCK?
kathryn
Good question. I'd say Honeycomb was laid back. But you are saying this will rock. So it's a new direction?
Jason Yeah, what exactly do you mean by "rock", again? (I'm kidding.)
I interpret "uptempo" as meaning the new songs are a departure from Honeycomb. I don't think anyone would call the songs on Honeycomb uptempo.
tiven No one will confuse this album with HONEYCOMB.
Period.
At first, I thought HONEYCOMB would be a high watermark that would be tough to live up to. And it is.
But wait till you hear what we got.

Are we talking R-O and the C-K in the USA Mellencamp rock or what?
fbc
We're talking R-O-C-K penned by the hand of Frank Black. Does it get any better?
Jontiven There is one cover. Sung as a duet. The guessing starts NOW and the duet singer is one of the singers who contributes to the background vocals for the other new tracks. You probably won't guess him and won't really care because you don't know who he is but he's superb.
And it isn't Ellis Hooks or Billy Swan. Or Buddy Miller.
And that's R-O-C-K as opposed to R-A-W-K. This is the original form.

Jon:
- What about the 5 songs that were left off Honeycomb? - Is 'The Sicilian' the definitive title? - Has the track listing been finalized?
Thanks again for visiting (and teasing) us so often.
Jontiven
In answer to all of the questions, the definitive answer is: "WE'LL SEE." We haven't finished mixing. I'm certain that eventually EVERYTHING will find its way to an official release. The question now is, what would make the best album. Nothing less will suffice.
OK, you guys want leaks, I'll give you leaks. How about some titles? Would that make people happy?
"Raiderman" "Elijah" "Johnny Barleycorn" (not the traditional song, or the Traffic arrangement thereof, but a new Frank Black song)
I am sworn to secrecy for the rest. If I told you any more, I would have to kill you. And that might be difficult, as I don't know who any of you are.
