They went to celebrate They went to have a ball Everyone gathered at the gates But it wasn’t good at all The sky was turning grey They laughed a their mistake As their skin began to crawl
Hey, but it’s too late for to go back now They closed the gates and the scene was set Enter into His Kingly Cave Don’t worry the leopards won’t bite you Wipe that big tear away
See they got jumpsuits on the headless cast Polished jewels under two inch glass And bullet holes in Vernon’s room out back Don’t worry the posse won’t shoot you No more crying today
He’s tripping over graves As the rain begins to fall And finally they escape When the shuttle bus is called The mourners now abate As one begins to say I scream I scream for all

Quotes: "[His Kingly Cave] is about Graceland. It's about a trip that I took to Graceland many years ago. I thought it would be fun to take hallucinogenic mushrooms while I was there. I was much younger than I am now. It's not something I would really do now. I was young and dumb and I went to Graceland with my girlfriend and we took mushrooms and it was a horrible and tense day. That's a telling of that day in that story." - Frank Black, Free Williamsburg, November 2002

yeah the quote we already have in the db sums up fb's drug of choice on this day, but the mention of 'cap' is an obvious reference to 'shrooms. So i say this should be included too. Away from the quote, the lyric points to frank tripping on the shroom of the mush rather than acid

Posted - 06/05/2005 : 14:47:18 Great pics oldman---coffeecan, and thanks for digging up the links Mr Ten Percenter. Noted on the Vernon Dean and as soon as I'm done with this endless pile of COSHH forms (middle of next week) I'll update to where we are. I didn't find anything new on google for this, quotes wise. But big props to transmarine for givng us that article bit!
So are there any references within the song other than Elvis's pa we think should be clarified? like caps reffering to mushrooms? Jumpsuits of elvis etc etc? Or do we think the quote already in the db takes care of that?
(and I read all those things on that poll once, Dean is one mean so and so)

Glad ya liked it Rita. It was just a fun little experiment...

Nice additions to the db, though.

Posted - 06/01/2005 : 12:39:12 Okay...sorry it took me so long to post...I couldn't access the site all day until just now. I believe this will shed some further light on the whole 'Graceland' idea as related to 'His Kingly Cave'.
This is from BAM MAGAZINE (as opposed to my mistaken magazine title in yesterdays post)...a free Southern California magazine which covers the world of pop music weekly.
The date is AUGUST 28, 1998. It is just after the release of FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS, just 4 months before PISTOLERO.
BM - So as a huge, true fan of rock, would you do some- thing like visit Jim Morrison's grave site in Paris?
FB - If I had the time. My brother and my girlfriend, we were there once, and they went over one afternoon. I freaked out at Elvis' grave, actually. I was on mushrooms at the time. Someone had given them to me and I was like, "Come on, honey, let's take these and go see Elvis' grave." This is like nine years ago. She was like, "No that's not the thing to do." But we did it. We started to trip inside this really claustrophobic tour where all these people were sobbing their brains out; I don't know if it was the anniversary of his birth or death. Then you're in like this garage in the back-"This is where they used to shoot off guns." Then, at the end, people are really crying, and all of a sudden, [making the Psycho shower noise] there it is, at my feet, the damn grave! I forgot he was there, and his mother and his twin brother, you know? It was really morbid. So anyway, I didn't go to see Jim Morrison's grave.
So there you have it folks. A lot of things in HKC that can all-too easily be associated with Graceland and his trippy experience there. Altered states, mansion walls, she says she better wait, but still the cap they ate, everyone gathered at the gates, their skin began to crawl, wipe that big tear away, jumpsuits on the headless cast, bullet holes in Vernon's room out back, He's tripping over graves, etc. Pretty cool, eh?
Even though the facts are pretty concrete, I still picture the song about a video game for some reason a' la Tomb Raider or Resident Evil. Whatever.

Posted - 06/01/2005 : 05:55:37 Hey Tre, thanks for doing this db update!
fbc posted something in the Joshua & Rich Mercy Lounge thread about me getting us some mind-expanding substances for Surfer Rosa, Kathryn, fbc, and myself for their visit to Nashville and then Memphis to see Graceland, and that brought on some vivid flashbacks from my visit to Graceland many years ago (1979, high school graduation present from my girlfriend), so, I hope you don't mind but I've copied and pasted my original post:
What a great pun by The Man, "trippin over graves", of course you have the psychedelic trippin and then the stumbling/trippin over Elvis' grave because the marble encasement of the grave sticks up a few inches above the ground and it is very easy to trip over it [they have since erected a short (2-3 feet) wrought iron fence around the graves, I assume to keep people from trippin over them]...Graceland is fucking awesome, and Frank nailed some of the sights there when he sings:
"See they got jumpsuits on the headless cast" (many of The King's famous rhinestone jumpsuits are displayed on headless mannequins)
"Polished jewels under two inch glass" (there is a small building in The King's compound where you walk through and view jewelry and other valuables encased in security glass)
"And bullet holes in Vernon’s room out back" (Uncle Vernon had his own room in a building behind the big house, and Elvis and his Posse were fond of shooting their guns back there)
"Don’t worry the posse won’t shoot you" (unless they had a little too much to drink during target practice and missed the target)
Something else I notice on my visit inside Graceland, as I left the downstairs "jungle room" with its leopards and wall to wall and ceiling to ceiling carpet, and I ascended up the stairs to the kitchen, there was a strong, lingering smell of fried bacon captured and forever preserved in the stairway and kitchen. You know, The King consumed copious amounts of fried bacon and other delicacies, including fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, around the clock.
Edit: [oops, my bad, while Kathryn and Surfer Rosa are trying to work out the logistics for a trip to Nashville and Memphis, the mind-expanding substances are for fbc and myself. I didn't want to mislead anyone or tarnish the reputations of these two fine ladies]

This is correct, Frog. I have an interview in Mean Street magazine from 1998 where he tells this story in depth. I will have to find it once I get home and then post it here.
