Posted - 04/19/2005 : 18:25:41 Hello!
I know you'd thought I had gone away but no. Couple more things. If anyone can shed light on these I will love you forever. Unless I don't like you already, they I guess I'll be grudgingly appreciative :P
Ludwidshafen Snake Oil are there any "official" lyrics to these? do we know anything else about them? i am sure I have seen reference to snake oil somewhere on this forum at some point? also for consistency: Take What You Want Down In The Hole
also, remnant points from the other threads
Massif Centrale Two people have said that Frank has mentioned the misspelling in a German interview in 2004, do we know any more about this interview? What was said? Who the interview was for?
Everything is New A brief google suggests the club on hermosa strand is the lighthouse club, a couple of links to this. .....at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, buying drinks for the likes of Chet Baker and Art Pepper.... http://www.thelighthousecafe.net/history.html http://www.jerryjazzmusician.com/shop/shopmain.cfm?CatalogName=lighthouse
What do you think? Is it?
Manitoba We have the story of the woman in the snow (and excuse my ignorance here please) who should I credit it to
Nadine The U.K. ep has a catalouge number, the US does not, that sound right?
The Snake We are happy with the astrological references here?
THIS THREAD IS A WORK IN PROGRESS - I MAY ADD MORE AS I THINK OF IT

I need snake oil to rub my feet Because they're sore, walkin' the floor My face is pale, mind gone stale Law's on my tail and a wild wild woman Wants me put into jail
chorus: Snake oil, snake oil Snake oil, snake oil Yeah, yeah, yeah I need snake oil
I need snake oil to rub my head To ease the pain in my brain Society is not for me Got me drinking chablis with a wild wild woman Trying to put the clinch on me

listening to the clip (over and over :P) holiday son sent me (thank you again so much for that) I get this:
Interviewer: Now coming back to this song because I like this song very much, the Massif Centrale... Frank: I spelled it wrong on the record, it's spelled wrong. I spelled it "Centrale" I don't know why Interviewer: Oh, but well it sounds nice Frank: Yeah.
and I got:

Hi Frank - great new album, and some very good reviews this time (ignore those fuckers who work at Q magazine). On the offchance that you hold court in Edinburgh, some more scraps for you:
1. Is Snake Oil a cover of the Steve Earle song? 2. Is the person commemorated in Ed is Dead and Adda Lee the same person? In fact, does this person appear in SMYT - Nadine, perhaps? 3. You said that Blood on the Tracks was not your favourite Dylan album, which is your favourite Dylan record - Blonde on Blonde perchance? 4. You have great taste by choosing Edinburgh to rehearse in! Any warm-up gigs planned - Charlie Thompson's Rush tribute band maybe?
Great new album - cannot wait until the 26th!
PS - Jonathan Ross said that he wanted you to appear on his radio show again after playing My Favorite Kiss last Saturday...
No man is an island, unless he is in the bath
snake is fb. no warm-up.. maybe open mic somewhere... b on b
yet....
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7230 lots of conjecture here, do we know for sure it's a cover anyone? I'm still digging?
and I need a moderator to tell me if the chinese astrlogy should go in as well.
thank you!

Posted - 04/20/2005 : 10:11:10 'Snake Oil' is a term used for fake, fraudulent, and usually ineffective potions and nostrums. The expression is also applied metaphorically to any product with exaggerated marketing but questionable or unverifiable quality
The term is used in many fields to denote something sold without consideration of its quality or its ability to fulfill its vendor's claims. This term originally applied to elixirs sold in traveling medicine shows. The salesmen would claim their elixir would cure just about any ailment that a potential customer could have.
I read somewhere this song is a cover. If it's true,i can't track down the original anywhere The Nadine single just says - Snake oil copyright control. |

The interview was from 11/11/03. Frank just said "It spelled wrong on the record.(...) I don't know why." It's a video interview that was linked on this forum. I saved it in mp3 so if you want the clip about MC I could send it to you. |

All I know about this is the piano part during the chorus is the same (or very similar) as the piano part during "Pray for the Girls" when Frank starts going "in sleep we searched behind the sun..."
I kind of assumed he took one from the other..

Anyway, mister Potter is now credited, Hermosa strand is now added. Just the Snake, confirmation of the lack of Nadine number (I can't find one anywhere and I looked) and a source for the Frank Black misprint interview!
oh and the B sides if anyone can shed any light there.
