Hobbit 2: Smaug.
Spoilers:
There were some good moments, the best one perhaps being Bilbo and Smaug's conversation but then the scene went on too long with the Dwarves fighting Smaug. It made him ineffective as a villain. I think I dozed off for a moment or two during this part. The barrel scene went on too long, same with the Laketown business, though I suppose they did a good job transliterating that. You can't just have Bard show up out of nowhere, so it makes sense they'd build him and the politics of the town up. Given Jackon's stretching moments out (see barrel scene) it didn't seem like they spent much time in Mirkwood. Some of the weird, hallucinatory moments and the spider sequence were well done but too short.
Oh, it was strange, when Bilbo is bound in the web, how quickly he just attacks with his sword, it seems like a moment built for tension, Biblo struggling to unsheath Sting and use it, the spider becoming aware of him shifting around inside the web etc. but instead it just plays out rather quickly. The movie was nearly three hours long but felt like ten to me and I usually enjoy a long movie. Ian McKellan as Gandalf was great but c'mon...wipe the bird feces from Radagast's face already, a terrible bit of decision making iwth his character design. |

American Hustle
The actors all appear to work very hard at being great in their roles. Art direction costumes photography all solid. But I paid for a story to be told. After familiarizing myself with the actual events (post watching this mess) I wondered was there even a reason for the telling? That to me is where the director failed. A fetish for 1970's garb and scumbags being scumbags isn't enough to keep my interest for 20 minutes let alone 2 hours. I've seen the movies that David O Russell is chasing and with this latest effort he is not even close. Did I mention that all the actors appear to have worked very hard in their roles and that I felt trapped in the theater for two hours watching them? |

The Wolf of Wall Street - very entertaining, engrossing and (intentionally) funny, not for the prudish however. It's actually depressingly unwholesome and testosterone-fueled, but their's no way Scorsese is celebrating this lifestyle... despite the humour, there's a dark tone throughout, which comes to the fore at the end.
(Apologies for the 'film critic' tone of that analysis.) |

SPOILERS:
What the fuck did I just watch? That was awful. About the only bit I liked was when he got angry at another driver before cutting to him going to church. The first time. it was funny; then it became tedious. I guess the other good part was the breakdown of the romantic comedy and hte parallel both with porn and the audience watching this movie. But other than that...terrible.
And Scarlett Johansen's character? "Ahll hayve ma mayd kleen yore playyce." Uggh. Terrible.
I'd say Gordon-Levitt did a good job directing it but I don't know how much of that I'd attribute to the d.p. He did do a good job acting like a lunkhead.
Watching this felt like going to a fancy, independent restaurant and being served Spagettios and Velveeta.
I get it; he's addicted to porn and can't fully enjoy sex. So? What the fuck? If this is the story, then everything else better be damn interesting and for me, it wasn't. How many times do I need to see him in a confessional? "I masturbated 22 times." What? C'mon, stop this, just stop this movie. Fuuuuck. Oh, I see, this film is one colossal act of masturbation. Yuck. |

I enjoyed this too. Was a little long at 3 hours but still managed to hold my attention (my bladder couldn't take the whole film in one go though after buying that drink at the cinema!).

Trying to catch up on Oscar contenders before this Sunday's show. Just saw 12 Years a Slave which though well shot was disappointing. Gravity was good. The effects were startling but the central idea of other people being our emotional gravity was rendered well. Captain Philips, Dallas Buyers' Club and Nebraska are up next, waiting on my hard drive. Haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street yet and am excited to see both Her and Inside Llewyn Davies. Opinions on any of these welcome.

I watched Blackfish. Spoiler Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!
The footage shown of that one trainer who was able to endure being dunked over and over again deep under water by a bus size fish then lucky enough to have that one shot at surviving by escape is worth watching. The rest of the film is painfully obvious. I remember being a spectator at Seaworld. I really wanted to be there for the show and my Dad relented. He tried to go along with the spectical but I can still see the right side of his face. The old man dug animals and knew when shit was off. He didn't say much afterwards. At the time I just chalked his reaction up to him being difficult to read. |

The Grand Budapest Hotel - haven't watched any Wes Anderson since The Royal Tenenbaums, but this piqued my interest. Funny, charming, touching and beautifully made.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - wouldn't have bothered with this except that I read good things about it... the first one was a bit meh but this is cracking stuff, great action and a smart story, plus Robert Redford!
Oh and also saw 300: Rise of an Empire recently, silly but visually stunning. A definite guilty pleasure movie. |

I'd like to see that one as well. I guess you've seen 'The Cove'?I tried to watch it at home but my daughters get really upset by any cruelty to animals, so I'll have to wait to watch it on my own on the PC some time. |

I can't figure out if I've never seen it or saw it while drinking.
I remember Mikey Rooney, maybe the scene came up when he passed.
I don't remember Eartha Kitt.
I had trouble keeping the characters straight,
do they or don't they necessarily die when they fall off the boat? |

dismay, shock, anger aren't really healthy incentives to watch a documentary, but i'm sure i'll be seeing the sequel - The Look of Silence. |

As far as I can make out, The Act of Killing is banned here for obvious reasons I guess.
