I mean the best band/artist that has started around 2000 (not 1900). It must be a mix of critical and public success with your own taste. Please don't choose "John Pudding & The Shrimps" on an indie label you've seen twice at the local pub.
For examples: The Strokes, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Interpol, Radio 4, The Datsuns, Electric 6, The Coral, Eighty Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Thrills, The Zutons, The Kills...
I would say the Strokes, they have good songs, ambition and I believe they can do better. White Stripes are ok but it won't last. The Libertines are my heart's fav, but I'm afraid they'll never gonna make it with all those stories
Count: Strokes :7 New pornographers: 6 5O ft Wave: 2 White stripes: 3 Crooked Fingers: 2 The Shins: 2 The Kills: 1 Electric 6: 1 80's matchbox B-Line Disaster: 1 Libertines: 1 The Killers: 1 Unicorn:1 Decemberists: 1 Bettie Serveet: 1 Franz Ferdinand:1 Ben Kweller: 1 QOTSA: 1
Edit: KingPhilbert mailed 'cause I had forgotten TarTar's vote for Crooked Finger.

I like them too, but they'll never gonna make it, it's just a joke, they'll never make 4 albums.
80's Matchbox, well, let's wait for their 2nd album. I've seen them in Paris, singer looks mad but I haven't been convinced. Too noisy.
Oh and I forgot Queen Of The Stone Age.

going to make it? they did pretty well with their first album, and it's a fantastic album, not just a band who do great singles...
all the bands you mentioned did a decent first album, that with loads of hype did quite well, then their next efforts (if they've done one yet) have been lackluster, to say the least. the strokes are a 1 trick band, they don't have anything else in them! same with the white stripes (who took a couple of albums to get noticed properly)

You can't say Libs and Strokes 2nd CD are shit, their better than their 1st CD.
I was waiting for the "hype" thing. When one's gonna pull out the "Overrated" thing?

I prefer the first Libertines album - far more raw - 2nd album doesn't work as well for me |

overrated too yeah, dead right! second strokes and second libertines albums are poor, they haven't got anything else to offer. quite sad, especially as the strokes seemed to have some potential at first...

remig, in reply to me suggesting electric six as being a band *I* like, you said...
"I like them too, but they'll never gonna make it, it's just a joke, they'll never make 4 albums."
is that not pretty much saying they suck? or they're not as good as the bands you suggested?

I like E6 very much (love their video, and was my last summer soundtrack), but maybe my english is not very good (I only use it on the forum). By saying "they'll never gonna make it", i wanted to say (in my opinion)they won't be an influencial, important band. It's not a serious band, they do it for fun.
So sorry for not using the right term, but it's something else than just saying "libertines suck big ones".

well if that's someones opinion! i don't think much of the libertines myself and struggle to understand how they could influence anyone when their sound is nothing new... just re-vamped 70's garage punk rock...
we'll just have to agree to disagree, i think electric six have plenty more in them (they wisely have taken their time to do a new album, instead of rushing a new one out whilst they're 'the big thing') and their sound/types of songs quite different to a lot of the bland stuff about this century so far...

I too would go for electric six, and The Kills, who I fucking love.
And just because a band dont go on and on and on and on and on for years doesnt mean they are any less deserveing than bands like guns n roses who dotn fucking shut up.

I would say either the Libertines, Rancid or Hefner. Probably if pushed I would say, and remember this is my opinion, Hefner.

oh arse should read it clearer, started in the 90's, of course I knew that, I was responsible for the dear departed hellokitten.com. So ok a band that started in the 00's, um well the libertines then. or solo ben folds.

I can't think of a band that has started this side of the millenium I'm that nuts over, strokes, YYY's. Kings of Leon and White Stripes, and the Franz, I like them all I listen to them all but I don't think they're profoundly genius or anything. I'll pick strokes just because they're good to wiggle to but I aint that happy about it at all.
AND, everyone has been libertine loving at me and I find them dull

I need 10 years more to make an appropiate decision. I still don't have an answer for "Best band of the 90's" question.

I don't know. The 00's bands are not that good. I would say The Killers. Best album I've heard in a long time. |

Since they've reformed, I guess Pixies are the best band of the 'noughties'. Right? |

its the strokes for me. for some reason i liked it straight away (which is rare for me,usually it always takes me a few listens). just loved the driving bass lines and the riffs. but few years gone by and it dont get played that much now.
but still, i loved it back then and it was a critical and public success too (right place at the right time i guess. ain't that the way) i need to check out the others a little more, i've been in Frank Black and the Catholics bubble for a few years. it kinda got in the way of any other.
'nother vote for the Strokes

doesn't it seem a bit early for this? Its only twenty-aught-four. Its like saying back in 94 that Nirvana is the best band of the nineties...okay, bad example.
The Strokes get my vote. Though success has really gone to thier heads, I've always enjoyed their albums. |
