"The advocates of stronger regulation and control of creative property rights and the US-led right-wing, pro-industry lobby groups seeking stronger anti-piracy legislation have been dealt a blow with the announcement of a compilation CD called "The Wired CD: Rip. Sample. Mash. Share." It's open-source music, basically.
The CD featured tracks by prominent artists like the Beastie Boys, Matmos, Gilberto Gil and others and is going to given away for free; copying the CD, remixing it or modifying it is encouraged."

"'The motivation for Creative Commons lies in the almost irrational movement in the U.S. toward, for example, suing 60-year-old ladies because they downloaded an unauthorized copy of a Doris Day song. Copyright protection today has become an absolute restriction', said Gilberto Gil, a prominent musician, participant in the project and Cultural Minister of Brazil."
