I don't want to hear it with my crappy laptop sound. I will wait until I buy the CD.
What a wonderful show it was...

yes it was a great show man ohh man
I'm listening to smile now and I have to say it tops the original performance and that's a big big big plus because I was a bit afraid Wilson couldn't pull of the vocals after hearing him live and all...

I listened to the second movement and it is absolutely ethereal, but I'm holding out on the rest until the release date. I believe a better quality version is available somewhere on the VH1 website.
Apparently Nonesuch's marketing technique (I feel like a complete idiot--I forgot how to spell technique!) of making the entire album available online for free is working quite well, as the Amazon sales ranking shot up from 19 to 7 after it was made completely available today; and there is still a week to the release date! Maybe this will send a message up the RIAA's ass about file sharing!

I've been to that official site. Gotta get the real thing. It'll be top of my list when it comes out. He's playing in Minneapolis in a week and I really, really want to go. |

Bought a mag yesterday which came with a sampler CD, and it includes a song from Smile which blew me away. The song's called Wonderful. I can't wait to buy that CD.

Hé hé Nice pics isn't it? The worst they ever did.
I'm currently listening a very good bootleg of Smile live (24/02/2004 in London). It's already so good.

Thank you SO much for that link to the VH1 site version
Anyone else see this live? Really weird hearing how the recorded version has production touches that make it sound like a 60's recording. I get all jumpy just talking about this stuff. Amazing. Just... wow.

Yeah, and the vocals really are SO MUCH better than I expected. One thing that bugs me, however, is the fake harpsichord and tack piano, but in the overall scheme of things it's really not that big of a deal.

One of the shows on WNYC aired Smile in its entirety tonight. Ouch, I had to turn it off after about 20 minutes- it was unbearable. What am I missing? Am I the only one who thinks that Brian Wilson is NOT a genius? yeah, he had a couple of good ideas, but I don't get the love affair. |

It will be out tomorrow in France. I must plan something for my girlfriend so she goes out for at least 1H30 and let me listen to it quietly.

It's not that I don't like the Beach Boys- some really great songs, stuff I grew up hearing. But genious, no. I can think of bands/songwriters that far surpass Wilsons' stuff. |

I'm sitting here listening to SMiLE, and if I were capable of easily crying, I would be. This is up there as the most beautiful music I've ever heard. I'd cry for Brian Wilson, who after more than 37 years, has put his demons aside and sings with all his heart, to prove to the world how beautiful life, love, and imagination can be. His voice is simply beautiful; I never thought I'd appreciate this more than the bootlegs I've collected over the years, but he disproved all the doubters.
Thank you, Brian.
(I'll ignore slaveish's comment)
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Is it true? Is it better than the bootlegs? Is it better than the live recordings?

I won't try to describe or review it because no words can possibly express how spiritual and beautiful this album is! Thank you, Brian!

It's definitely a notch above the bootlegs.
I haven't heard it live, though...

How's Brian's voice held up? It was kind of shaky last time I heard.

It's still shaky, but much better than his other most recent efforts. Of course, his voice is the only thing that even almost deteriorates the new recordings (besides the fake harpsichord and tack piano), but it's not too bad. In fact, it's very good at times and at times quite reminiscent of his 60's voice (especially on Wonderful and Windchimes). Actually, I can't think of any sub-par performances; it's just that his voice isn't quite as enjoyable as it once was, but he sings on tune throughout the album and hit's a few fairly high notes here and there (someone else handles the impossibly high notes on "Surf's Up" for him).

come to think of it, the impossilbe hight notes were never sung 100% by Brian in the past too
I think his voice sounds great on this record I don't particularry hear the fakeness of the harpsichord and piano but I think it's very very lazy of them to use synths. On the road ok, but in a studio?
Since I don't hear it, I do actually but I'm not soar about it, I'm not gonna let this 'mistake' ruin my perfect SMiLE

I think Smile is perfect. Using synth is not such a mistake, listen to Smiley Smile, it has plenty of early synth sounds, The Beatles used them too. I think it gives it a special sound. And it's not like fake trumpets or something.
Reply to myself: it's better than the live performance, but just 20% better. The show was so awesome and perfect. *********************************************** So you have no point of reference, Donny. You're like a child that wanders INTO THE MIDDLE OF A MOVIE! |

which songs? Surf Safari? Surfin U.S.A? Have you heard Pet Sounds?
The man was so young when he made this. I cant think of too many others who have made such and album. from the 60's, without todays technology or super huge mixing desks. My friends are hit and miss with the Beach boys, but just like they are with Frank Black. I got into the Beach Boys then realised the man behind the machine was indeed Brian Wilson. I.M.O a f***kin genius. each to their own i guess. |

I don't have it yet - so: has anyone compared the new recordings (they're all new, right?) with recordings from the original smile sessions? Has anything been added (except a final track order..)? Is it just better sounding? The same feel? |
