I am going to see him on October 4th and I am VERY excited! Has anyone else seen him on this tour? Or ever? I haven't. And I am madly in love with his newest CD (see my signature!) so yahooooo!

It will be an interesting day b/c I also have jury duty. Feh.

Good grief, save me from the madness.
They play Morrissey and Shed Seven constantly at work, two of the bands I dislike the most.
I love the Smiths, but I pretty much can't stand the Moz. All the interviews I've seen put me off immediately, but I don't think the music is up to that much to be honest. He needs Johnny Marr.

Well, um, if you hate him so much you didn't need to read the topic, Mr. Cheese!

I love YOU ARE THE QUARRY soooo much, have you heard any of that? It's fabulous. I don't care what you say!

He provokes my ire, hence I read the topic. Yes I've heard the CD, almost constantly. Maybe thats why I don't like it.

In my younger daze I was madly in love with him and the Smiths. I saw him twice on the Kill Uncle Tour. Since I was working for a paper at the time I got to get up close to the stage and take picutres. It was cool. I think I am not going to see him this time due to $$ and the fact the two shows I saw him at are kinda the way I want to remember seeing him if that makes any sense.

You know what: I've never ever heard any Smiths or Morrissey song.

What's so great about them?

I've got some doubts about the "quality" of their music, if they had only one good melody I would have heard it already.

In fact I think I've heard a Supergrass cover (Some girls are bigger than others). It was half cool, was it because of Supergrass?

So you have no point of reference, Donny.

The same could be said about Frank, but we all know that his music is great. You should listen to some of their music. 'Hatfull of Hollow' is a good place to start.

You all are funny. I will definetly enjoy it. I may even cry (which I usually do at shows of music I love because I am a weirdo). I will report back.

Well the Smiths have novel lyrics, I like Morrissy's distinct voice, Johnny Mar is a killer gutairst (but I like Joey better). It's great music to listen to when you are going thorugh teen angst. It's a perfect balance between self deprecating humor and meloncholy.

They're not rock and roll though...but they're original.

The Smiths had some monumentally brilliant musical moments, or at least some excellent/very good ones:'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side', 'This Charming Man', 'Bigmouth Strikes Again', 'Shakesphere's Sister', among others...and Morrissey has some great solo songs ('Suedehead', 'Everyday Is Like Sunday'). I hav'nt heard that Supergrass cover, but Placebo's version of 'Bigmouth' is okay.

I am wearing my Morrissey T-shirt right now. It's black, actually. I wear it a lot.

Cheeseman, I was surprised to read what you wrote but I still think you're cool. We're all allowed our musical dislikes.

I love love love the Smiths and Morrissey but can't quite bring myself to calling him Moz.

Ramona, you will have a lovely time, I am sure. Lucky you!

Kathryn, is black how you feel inside?

I love the Smiths and a couple of Morrissey's songs are brilliant (Everyday is like Sunday, Jack the Ripper). My ex-girlfriend liked the Smiths very much. It's not usual for a girl - Morrissey's lyrics are somehow better understood by boys.

What I really like about this music is its humour. Like in this song, Handsome Devil - I posted the lyrics a couple of months ago. Unlike all these bands like Radiohead, Morrissey was able to both desperate and funny. "shyness that is criminally vulgar"

I think I was somewhat put off Morrissey by seeing a couple of interviews with him: he comes as quite arrogant and aloof - not a rock star detachment, more of an irritating character trait. Its almost like he buys into this image that he's created for himself, the miserable old man railing against the evils of the world.

I'm happy to agree that he's one of the finest lyricists the world has ever produced, but for the most part I don't feel that the music has been up to scratch. Johnny Marr is a musical genius and a great guitarist, and acted as a perfect foil to Morrissey's lyrics. They were the perfect package together, but separately not so hot.

I think he's one of those artists that totally polarises opinion, so I don't really mind if you like him - I can kind of see why. I'l just politely disagree.

I have listened to some of his older stuff again, heard his new album, and I have decided that I still like him.

Of course he's a poseur, but he does have talent, so I guess that makes up for it.

And the Smiths were the first important band in my life, so I owe him (and Johnny Marr) a lot.

Did you know that Andy Rourke had to auction his bass guitar on eBay last year (the one he recorded some Smiths album or other with)? Sad, eh.

Reading/ watching Morrissey interviews usually makes me wish I didn't like his music. But I do. Love the Smiths, like the new album and some patches in his solo career were ok.

Sad about Andy Rourke yes. I've read a few articles which claimed that Morrissey was the only one to make money out of the Smiths. He lives in a LA mansion now......

I don't think that he is an engaging guy and when i see him in interviews i do cringe but i just try to avoid it so as not to contaminate the music. I can't work out whether the whole thing is an act or he is that way inclined.

There are lots of famous people that come across badly in interviews (Frank being one of them) but then they can't all be Kim Deal.

I do appreciate your polite and thought-provoking disagreement, Cheesedude. I know what you mean about the irritating character trait so I was pleasantly surprised to see in most of the "Quarry" interviews that Morrissey seems mellowed out and actually happy, not morose at all. Certainly changed from his 80s gloom, which, happily, I can also say for myself.

And, yes, I am wearing another black Morrissey T-shirt as I type....

On-topic! Oh, no!

I agree. Frank comes off as anything but arrogant. Deeply intelligent, very funny and emotionally astute. Whereas Kim Deal sounds mopey and self-pitying at best, IMHO.

I think he comes across as bad tempered and he seemed like a bit of a jerk in that Spin article. Don't all jump on me, i love Frank, i just wouldn't want to interview him.

Mind you, i suppose it's easy to get fed up with answering the same questios over and over.

Well, I think it would be a wonderful thing if Morissey got back together with the original Smiths members. I just don't think it woudl ever happen due to the fall out with Morissey/Marr. But it wold be a beautful reunion. Second to the Pixies of course. It would also be a good thing to help out the other band members.

As far as how Charles comes across in the interviews is refreshingly honest/straight forward, compelling, witty, somewhat sarcastic, self aware and down to earth. I have heard the way Morissey comes across and he does come across as arrogant-- but I thought that may have more to do with the persona than what seems/seemed to be an overly sensitive person-- it's just Morissey being Morissey.

Gracie, I am fascinated by differences in perspective and by subjectivity -- or is the word "subjectiveness"? Anyway, I love Frank and I am not jumping all over you. But I thought that in the Spin piece he seemed very cool and confident and I thought it was Kim who came off as a jerk. Interesting how people can have such different opinions about the same thing.

How do you pronounce this guy's name? I always thought it was Mora-see, like the a in "pa."

But there's a Mountain Goats song where he says "I don't like Mor-risee," like the i in "his" and he breaks up the emphasis differently too.
