They open for the Pixies a lot this fall, including the show I'm going to October 6th.
The easiest way to find out about a band is usually to visit their website. Taking a gamble, I try www.thethrills.com and sure enough, there's a band's website.
I listened to some samples, but then I look at the tour dates, and none of them match up to the Pixies shows.
So is there another band called "The Thrills" or what?

They're really not very good. They're Irish, I think, and they are nostalgic for this whimsical brand of 60s pop. And that description sounds too good for them. Meh. |

yep! they so wanna desperately fill the void the beach boys left behind, even bringing in their string arranger to give em more of that sound on their new album. avoid at all cost! its like they hired out the top 100 surf epics from the 60s, took a little from each and then banged it on a record...mentions of paramount pictures and andy warhol.
they've havent got much in common with the Pixies which is why its bafflin they could actually be supporting. |

they're not too bad, i saw them before they were 'big' at a small club, and really enjoyed it, thought they were great. unfortunately i've since found they only have 1 'thang' (yeah the beach boys rip off sound) and all their songs sound the same pretty much...
And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around. |

Awful, awful rubbish. Four (or however many) snobby little irish rich kids doing a bad job ripping of songs from yesteryear with their own distincitive whine. As formulaic as anything by a boy band. Utter shit. |

dont you think its bit strange these irish boys move to cali or wherever to imitate the surf sound? videos on the beach, crashin waves...you're irish for f**ks sake. its all bit too planned/pre-meditated.
BUT... i know theres worse stuff out there. |

amazingly the thrills are VERY popular over here -they are like a boy band with beards. their first album was no.1 in the album charts for ages over here and they are promoting their new album by putting up huge posters all over the city and the radio is playing their 'corey haim' song to death. not a huge fan of their music - but somebody over here obviously is. Own up therewererumours!

i didn't know they were Irish. that's funny.
i like the whole California theme of the first album.. it's all places i'm very connected with (Santa Cruz, Big Sur, San Diego, Hollywood)
it got old really fast though.. but i think they'd be fun to see live.

They actually moved to California to soak up the environment and get to the roots of surf, and wrote their first album from there. They're not bad, but I've gotta' agree with Floop.

hey Frank
there's nothing wrong with liking the beach and surfing. did i say that? Its just their album was so California sound and the videos too that i forgot they were Irish. But dont get me wrong though, please, I dont expect a band to stick to their roots and only write songs in the key of their country. (the kings of surf guitar didnt actually surf ('cept one)).
i think Cali's a bit far too go to get inspiration when some major and killer albums have been written in bedrooms and closets.

Ok, so they suck. But can anyone tell me why the tour dates on their website don't match the Pixies tour dates where they are supposedly opening for them?

I didn't even know they were based in California now, my friends used to joke when they heard that 'Oh santa cruz, no, you're not that far' song, yeah only about 14,000 frickin' miles from Dublin! They purposely put all these Californian place names in - i think someone said they had started using East Coast names now... What dickheads!!!

I saw David Lovering's Scientific Phenomenalism as support for the Pixies. Not that I want to rub it in, but I bet he was better than the Thrills.

i've found myself using some US place names in some of my songs, admittedly not singing about a place being not too far or a girl being from there, because that'd be lies... but american place names seem to sound better in songs, don't you think? i don't know, i can't imagine singing a song about birmingham or sheffield... heh

Saw the Thrills last year, I enjoyed their first album (I'm a Beach boys fan, but got disapointed seeing them on stage. the show lasted 3o min, when the singer tryed to sing his "Ouh Ouh Ouh", his voice broke up. And I don't even talk about Irish public coming with their flag in PAris...
Their next album is quite the same as the first, the 3 first songs are Ok, but he's whinig voice starts to annoy me. |

Well they looked stupid with their irish flag, drunk and shouting like it was their local football team. This did not fit at all with the kind of music they play and their californian style. I would eventually have appreciate that for a Pogues gig...
Damn, I can't imagine myself being at a gig in London or Dublin or wherever hanging up a french flag, adn look like a hooligan. |

I don't know who the 'they' you talk about are. Fans at the gig? doesn't matter. And since you mention the Pogues, did you hear the orginal line up is reforming? Shane McGowan is back - they're playing in Dublin in December. |

This is GREAT news!!!!
Scouring the net for news of this!
Hell YEAH!
Can anyone hit http://www.shanemacgowan.com/ ? I have DNS issues here. Funny - watch where www.thepogues.com connects to. Lol.
Ok - I found this: www.filter-mag.com/news/interior.1570.html" target="_blank">http://www.filter-mag.com/news/interior.1570.html
The Pogues Announce UK Reunion Tour by Chi Tung | 07.22.2004
Irish rockers the Pogues, led by turbulent frontman Shane MacGowan, will attempt a brief UK reunion tour, beginning in December. The performances — set to kick-off at Glasgow’s Academy on December 13 — will be the group’s first since 2001.
Meanwhile, MacGowan continues to be mired in controversy, as numerous fans have started a petition on the lead singer’s website, with hopes of axing current manager Joey Cashman, as well as the boycotting of these later shows. MacGowan’s father Maurice is among these supporters.
Reunion dates:
Dec. 13-14: Glasgow (Academy) Dec. 16: Newcastle (Arena) Dec. 17: Birmingham (Academy) Dec. 18: Manchester (M.E.N. Arena) Dec. 20-21: London (Brixton Academy) Dec. 23: Dublin (Point)
Whats up with this boycott bullshit?
Wish I was over there. I'd be at one of (or a few) those shows for sure.

One word of advice for anone who guys to a show where the thrills are supporting: If the singer takes out a harmonica, block your ears, or if your cloe enough, try to bludgoen him to death (in fact, attempt to do so regardless of the presence of a harmonica)
I had to endure them before the pixies in the phoenix park. the only thing that kept me in any way interested was that halfway through their set (of songs that all sound the same) the bassist started playin guitar and the guitarist started playin bass. Or maybe the guitarist started playin guitar and the bassist started playin bass, i dunno. |

Can someone please tell me if www.thethrills.com is the right band? Their tour dates do NOT match the Pixies dates. If this is not the right "thrills" band, can someone please point me in the direction of the actual bands website so I can dig up some of their music to sample.

looks to me like it's just a typo.
i think they meant Oct and not Sep for those thrills dates, which match up with Pixies.
now feel free to download some of those initially-likable-but-quickly-boring tracks everyone's been talking about!
