I just can't get enough of these. I just watched the remake of "Dawn of the Dead." I haven't seen the original for about eight years, so I can't say how they compared. Usually remakes bother me, but these kinds of films are just so goofy and similar that it doesn't seem to matter. DotD could have been better but it wasn't horrible either. I could have used some more wide shots of the widespread panic and mobs of Zombies. The ending also sucked and they never bothered to explain why people were becoming zombies but, as I recall, they didn't explain it in the original "Night of the Living Dead" either. I seem to remember someone here saying they were a big Romero fan (was it Tre?) so, what did you think of the remake? I liked that the zombies ran in this one rather than lurch; much more frightening.
DotD took a fairly serious approach to the whole thing but that makes it comparable to "28 Days Later" and that's tough to beat.
I would like to see a remake of "Night of the Comet." Why are these disaster movies so addictive? I just love seeing depictions of how people might react in such a disaster.
I've been reading the comic "Y: The Last Man." It's incredible and I believe it's owned my Warner Bros., so expect a movie from that.
Anyone have any favorites in this genre?

watching Evil Dead II is a helluva lot of fun after a night on the loopy juice, everyone is up for it. I loved the original & remade Dawn of the Dead
Whats the Zombie movie that starts out with some cops checking out an abandoned boat? |

That's ZOMBIE from Mr. Lucio Fulci. ZOMBIE also had fast-moving zombies, especially evident in its classic Zombie vs. Shark underwater wrestling match scene.
I haven't seen new DAWN OF THE DEAD yet. Though I've read some positive things about it, I'm not too excited. I'll see it eventually, but I don't trust the big movie studios with horror movies anymore. They keep screwin' em up.
A recent zombie epic that I like a lot is a Japanese shot-on-video movie called STACY. It's way off its rocker. It's not on the same planet as the rocker.
STACY tells us what might happen if all the world's 15 to 17 year old girls began suddenly dying for no reason and then waking up as flesh-eating zombies that can only be killed when you chop them up into tiny pieces. The world changes completely and girls don't plan for marriage anymore but rather dream about finding the right man to "repeat kill" them when the time comes. It says a lot to me about my life. Three subplots. 80 minutes. It held my attention. It's not scary, but it is really bizarre and funny and, like many of the new shot-on-video exploitation films, it piles on the blood & guts.
You can't miss the DVD cover. It's the one where the Japanese girl has cherry pie gore dripping off her face. |

Sounds cool; I'll have to look for it. I might be able to miss the cover though, cause I just saw a Japanese horror movie called "Ju-On 2: The Grudge" and it also had a girl with cherry pie gore dripping from her face. That movie was unintentionally funny at times but also had some pretty creepy scenes, actually.

I thought that was called 'Zombie Flesh Eaters'?
Realmeanmotorscutor, did you really think that much of 28 Days Later? I wasn't that impressed I have to say. Each to their own I guess but I thought the remake of DOTD was much better.

Yeah, I really did think 28 Days was impressive. I liked the approach and storytelling. It gave a background to the disaster and an ending as well. We weren't left with so many questions as to make it unbearable. What didn't you like about it HPM and why did you think DotD was better?

It means rubbish. I guess it's an English term.
With regards 28 Days Later, and this is gonna sound stupid, but I have a problem first off with most English films. I just don't think we know how to make gripping cinema. The film seemed like a British 'attempt' at a horror film. I think also that becuase T.V is so shitty over here, I have a problem watching a film with the same actors, locations, accents, dialogue etc as those programs.
It's odd because we make some amazing comedy T.V shows, but our comedy films are absolutely awful (post-Monty Python). Horror is not something we delve into much nowadays, and perhaps that is part of the problem. We don't have much experience in that genre. Dog Soldiers wasn't too bad but then I like werewolf films.

I thought that was called 'Zombie Flesh Eaters'?
These movies often have 37 different titles. Different titles for different countries, different titles for different cuts of the movie, etc. ZOMBIE may well be ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS somewhere.
In the US, this film is available on at least two different DVDs. One is called ZOMBIE. The other US DVD uses its Italian title, ZOMBI 2 (called that in an effort to sell it to the Italian audience as a sequel to DAWN OF THE DEAD (aka ZOMBI in Italy)) |

I would hardly call myself an afficionado, and maybe I have the MTV-generation attention span, but I liked the remade Dawn Of The Dead better than the original. It was good fun, and the zombies were feasibly dangerous. In the original, it seemed like if you walked fast you would be able to outmanouver the zombies. Plus I liked the inclusion of the Johnny Cash and Richard Cheese songs.
Shaun Of The Dead, anyone?

Not bad, but not that good either. Another British comedy film that failed to be anywhere near as funny as British T.V IMO.
Perhaps Steve Coogan needs to make an Alan Partridge film.

I REALLY have no idea what you are talking about. And I don't need to see Shaun Of The Dead again, thank you very much. Much of the humour was just too forced, too obvious, delivered by actors that are just not cut out for comedy. Just my opinion Simon.

Hello. I've been away but fear not the zombie girl is back...
The italian zombie films are great, hurrah lucio, there's a million billion of them, mine's called zombie flesh eaters rather than zombie and I'm loving the wood gouging out eyeball scene, fantastic. You can recognise the majority of the italian zombie/horror by the black DVD case, with the gold skulls and the drippy writing (keep an eye out for "The Nostril Picker" fucking HILARIOUS) they're also always bloody cheap (around a fiver) so there's no excuses not to own at least one!
Shaun of the dead I personally loved but peg-y can do no wrong in tre's eyes. It wasn't what I was expecting, I thought it would be mostly comedy but it had some fairly serious zombie scenes in it too, I personally really like that film and don't get why it was slated. "can I get... any of you cunts... a drink?"
Evil Dead/Evil Dead II/ Army of Darkness, one of my absolute fave series in this genre, how cool is brucey C, he's my hero, he has a great documentary too about him and his chin. Ash is great, the first is fairly serious in it's intent, the second is fucking funny and the third is a crazy piss take, brilliant, hurrah for raimi! "Here's my boomstick"
Night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, day of the dead, the best (and most famous I guess) of the three is dawn of the dead, just superb, night of the living dead is also a cracking film though and I'm loving that everyone dies! It's funny as, I have the black and white version, I don't dig the remastering action, I think it's better in blck and white "Barbera... they're coming to get you Barbera..." Day of the dead, pile of toss, lobotomising zombies, puh-lease... On a side Romero is working now on a new zombie film called Land of The Dead, about the class divide in a zombie situation.. I'm not holding my breath.
Avoided here (and I don't know WHY) is Brain Dead, the peter jackson film, man I love that guy, the lawnmower scene is fantastic, the film rules, also Bad taste and meet the feebles for any other peter jackson fans.. I mean! How cool is he! it's definatley different from lord of the rings, he is one sick puppy but a total genius, I mean did you know that bad taste took 4 years to make, they only filmed on sundays because they all worked in a printers together and peter jackson made all the props and stuff... what a guy! "I'm a derek... derek's don't run"
28 days later I really liked, I was disappointed they wussed out at the end HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE but he was quite hot so I can live with it, it was like outbreak meets zombie horror meets lord of the flies I thought, I also like christopher eccleston so I did have a bias.
Dawn of the dead re make was fantastic, BUT, I can't compare it to the original because they are incomparable, two totally different stories, I think it shouldn't have been called a re make, because it's not. Some great parts to that film too, I like it when so called heroes come a cropper, I liked the zombie babies, I really liked the way it was filmed too.
Both 28 days later and DOTD (remake) are what I call "new breed" zombie films, If you look back zombies are slow moronic flesh eating meanies, new breed zombies seem really rabid, Romero himself said "They're corpses- not athletes" so it's taking tre a bit of adjustment to get used to these quick zombies...
have I covered the fundamental zombie movies here?? any I've missed out??

didn't saw this remake of "night of the living ..." or 28 days, but to me best zombie's movies I've ever seen are the original "night", but I prefer "dawn of the dead".
Never saw a Fulci movie yet, but I heard some of them are quite good.
The first Evil Dead is great, technically and formally. I also love Brain Dead, this one is just hilarious. One of the first Cronenberg:"Frissons" (I don't know how it's called in english) was hilarious too.
By the way, what do you tasteful people think of film-makers like Mario Bava or John Carpenter?

I just saw the commercial for that one. I wonder if it'll be any good, fairly new concept, to actually be able to fool the zombies...
Did anyone hear of this movie 'Saw'? My hubby is dying to see it (hehe).

I like the billboards for that film, "Do you dare see Saw". Clever.
I'm going to take the unusual opportunity of not mocking you Mike, but I'll definitely recommend Spaced, it was a TV series a few years ago. Absolutely genius, and if you like your trivia, rammed with movie references and the like.

The sequel is out! It's out! I haven't seen it.
I liked RESIDENT EVIL. It's more an action movie than a horror movie, but that's alright. It reminded me of the kinds of action movies that used to come out in 80s (R-rated, violent -- like PREDATOR or something) and that seem to be a bit more rare today. And I've never seen Milla Jovovich photographed better than she is in that movie.
Going back to realmeanmotorscutor's comment about apocalyptic movies/NIGHT OF THE COMET, I give a huge recommendation for a Canadian film from five or so years ago called LAST NIGHT. It's about the last day before the world ends. I don't think it's ever explained why the world is ending. The movie concentrates on the characters and how they choose to spend the day. It's a cool movie. It plays an especially thoughtful TWILIGHT ZONE episode. |

Do you mean that it "plays out" like an especialy thoughtful TZ episode, or that it actually shows a clip of a TZ ep? Anyway, thanks for the recommendation; it sounds really cool and I'm going to add it to my list of things to see.
I remember thinking Resident Evil looked awful. That little girl from the previews seemed lame and it didn't seem to have anything to do with the game. Am I wrong? Man, I would love to see a movie really based on the game.
So, did we ever figure out why these threads are so wide? Time to check the Wide Load thread, I guess.

It plays out like an especially thoughtful TZ episode. My posts are overrun with typos like Philadelphia is overrun with zombies in a Romero movie.
I've never played the Resident Evil game and haven't a clue about how close the movie is to it. RESIDENT EVIL, the movie, doesn't hold a candle to any of the classic zombie movies mentioned here, but it's entertaining enough if you're in the mood for a slick, trashy action movie. |

Last night I bought "The Day After Tomorrow." My friend bought "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" but I want to wait to see that until I see the first.
I also bought "Identity" because I've heard good things about that.

Thanks, I'll keepmy eyes peeled, but it's hard to find lesser known titles here, especially if they're not American. I saw 8-Legged Freaks in a store the other day - looks cheesy but I've been wanting to see it and for .85, you can't go wrong.
