Do remember tunes of the pixies used in TV commercials.
Currently in france we have a Puma (sportswear) using gigantic.
Don't know if it's broadcasted worldwide. |

think i remember a thread like this somewhere before. i havent seen no puma ad over here but few years back we had a Smirnoff Ice ad with Tame. Was basically the verse with Franks heavy breathin then the big scream. loved it. not the ad, but just the fact Franks screaming his head off on national tv. dont think the grannies were too impressed.

yeah. but you know theres that guy or gal whose finished there degree and landed a job with a PR firm, and get the brief of putting music to the visuals. least they got good taste. when you change the channel and you hear that sound, it made me smile. for a second there, i felt happy. |

I remember it - loved it too - thought it was a rather brave music choice for an ad - made me smile everytime. |

I think it's ok as long as the song matches the product-- I wouldn't want to see it for something like AXE body spray or fast food but a premium product like a luxury auto or ipod or something would be cool. I am ok with music being in commercials after the Beatles and Janis took the plunge. |

The Beatles had no choice. Neither did Janis, obviously. The Beatles' catalogue is owned by the plague known as Michael Jackson. He's the one who used them in commercials. Not the Beatles.

Good point Crouton. I've probably seen more "bad" commercials with music than good-- it's a tough balancing act. I don't have much advertising experience but I am guessing most bands don't have a lot of creative control over the final product. |

The problem for me with good music in commercials is that you unwillingly start associating the song with the product. Now, that's probably EXACTLY what the companies want, but I friggin' HATE it when that happens to me. For example with "Heroes" by Bowie. That's used in a commercial here in the Netherlands. I can't hear that song anymore without it reminding me of the commercial, thus the name of the company. I hope it will fade over time, because that's another song I used to love ruïned by the unrespectful hands of commerce. Therefore I especially hope NEVER EVER to see a commercial using Pixies/Frank songs.

I remember Frank talking about the Smirnoff ad when it came out. He was pretty cool about it saying, "Well it was an awful lot of money, and I like vodka, so I thought yeah, why not..."
Adverts can be a pretty good way for new bands to get heard, the exception of course being Reef, who should never of been heard by anybody

May be my imagination, but there's a Levi's commercial that always sounds to me like it rips off the bass line to I Bleed.
It's a really irritating commercial with a bunch of teenagers talking about how they refuse to conform and don't mind standing out in a crowd--by wearing Levi's, presumably. At the very end of the commercial, there's a really short guitar line. It's not the Pixies, but, like I say, it sounds like a direct ripoff of I Bleed's beginning bass line. |
