The Velvet Underground: I'm Set Free (guitar solo)
Pixies: Havalina

Shocking.

Yeah, icon of alternative rock.
Preposterous.

The Velvet Underground surely suck, they were in no way the major instigators of alternative music and are in no way influential.
Lou Reed is of course not one of the great songwriters of the last 50 years.[/sarcastic font]

Velvet Underground is, without a doubt, the most overrated band ever.
But I guess people dig your music if you're a self-proclaimed genius.

The most over-rated band ever is probably Oasis. They suck, and everyone knows they suck, and still: over-rated.

I wondered if it was intentional. I guess its more likely than not, Mr T is a pretty clever guy with the whole songwriting thing. The opening chord of Here Comes Your Man, for example - nicked wholesale from A Hard Days Night maybe, but when the whole song is a clear Beatles tribute it all makes sense.

I don't know how you can say the VU are overrated. I'm not a huge fan of Lou Reed's post VU work or really the man himself, however his work with the Velvet Underground is absolutly amazing.
In my opinion of course...

The cool thing is one way to look at it is are they thiefs or paying tribute?? Took a very transformational class Popular mus. in the 20th century in college... taught by an amazing musicologist... it's all been borrowed... from here and there... and gets passed along throughout time. I would say if it was "stolen" or heavily borrowed its from african-american community.

Can't say anything about LR as a person because I don't know him... but as a musican he rocks! Awesome voice, lyrics, image and music.

I can´t understand why some people don´t like VU and Lou Reed!
They were so great at their time, for me they were just like a band that if didnt exist, music wouldn´t be the same in our days!
And I also think that FB must have done it intentionally!

I suppose that some people expect a little more when they listen to 'legends' like VU for the first time.

I love their music though, and so does Charles.

Wow, I can not believe what I am reading in this thread. Granted, Lou Reed's work past the Velvet Underground wasn't the greatest but how can you deny that the Velvet Underground were an incredible band? I'm curious, for anyone who's commenting about how much the think they suck, what songs/albums have you heard? If it's not much more than Sweet Jane/Loaded you really haven't really heard what they sound like.

Hahaha How far we have come... Arguing whether or not the Velvet Underground is overrated! I hear in the old days people actually left the room when they started playing.
Anyways, even though I like the Velvets very much, I can understand why some people don’t. Still it’s a funny discussion.

The VU did some *really* cool stuff, but they also did a whole lot of utter boring *shite*. I know, because I had to sit through it waiting for an FB & the Cs gig to start once.

Lou Reed himself is way, way, *way* over-rated, despite having done some really good songs.

I don't mean to sound arrogant but IMHO listening to a band once doesn't give you a good enough impression of whether they're good or not.

I've heard "Velvet Underground and Nico" in its entirity.
The album was downright cheesy and bland. I found the "vocals" absolutely unbearable to listen to.

Okay, as I said, I can understand why some don't like the VU, but "cheesy"?? "Bland"?? Are you sure we're talking about the same "VU&Nico"?
Maybe you should listen to it again. (Try to pretend it's "VU sans Nico").

Try to put it in context as well: when was that album released, 1967 or something? There was nothing quite like Heroin or European Son then, was there?

I really liked the influence John Cale brought to VU. The electric viola on Venus in Furs and European Son sounds amaizing and back in the sixties must have really shocked people, or maybe not as much as The Gift concept. After he left they never really recaptured that pulsating frenzied sound.

Rock, like chess has a limited number of moves, and as there are chess games that have never been played, there are unending combinations of the textures of Rock. There are marketing formulators out there, Frank's not one of them. There is such a thing as unintentional plagiarism.
None of us would be here today if it weren't for the Velvets, whether you like 'em or not they were very germinal.
VU were inspired by the Fugs. Who were inspired by the beats. Who were inspired by working in fire lookouts. Which were inspired the tower of Babylon. Which was built by a guy named Nimrod. Who inspired a guy named Charles to write a song.

It's funny... I had heard a little about VU before then mostly because I love Andy Warhol. I even saw Dirty Blvd. on 120 minutes and loved it... but that line made me check them out and buy the banana peel cd. I totally dig them. Sweet Jane and Heroin are my favorites.
