Did these bands seem be joined in some way for anyone else?

If it weren't for this quad...and, well, going to college in the early 90's, I feel I would have been mired in small town schlock rock forever.

They were the four horsemen of the new dawn for me. They saved me from GNR, Metallica, Tesla and all the other garbage in the 80's. I realized it was okay that I didn't indentify with knuckle-dragging, cousin-fucking rednecks when I found these groups.

can't say I'm much into the other three bands (I respect em, but never really got into the much)

but the Pixies opened up musical doors for me (both in the music I seek out and the music I create) that no other band could have opened.

I dunno about U2, but the others are all very 'college' bands. I always loved REM(and Pixies-obviously!), and The Cure and U2 have some classic songs. Kurt Cobain always went on about growing up in a redneck community in interviews, and I believe Krist Novaselic was slagged off at school for not wearing flared trousers!

I cannot stand U2 or the Cure. Never could. Only recently, about 5yrs ago, did I really get into REM. Now I really like them esp Monster through Up (hah, thats kind of funny, threw up). I think I have 19 or so REM 7's.

Ok - U2 up to Rattle and Hum, Cure up to Disnetegration and REM up to Green. Ignore everything after that.

Murmur and Document are two of the most important records in my life. I only own two Cure greatest hits compiltations, Kiss Me and the new record and they're all great. I should get more.

I loved U2 during my days at school in the 80's. Unforgetable Fire was incredible then, now I don't listen to it much. Achtung Baby is allright. I cannot stand Bono though.

I can understand how these bands could wake you up to good music and make you go looking for more.

REM was also very important to me. I grew up in a conservative Texas town and REM was my entry-way band for finding out that there were many good bands out there that weren't on the radio (shocking). My favorites are Fables of the Reconstructions, Murmur, and Lifes Rich Pagaent.

How people view U2 I bet is very dependent on their age. I respect U2 and use to have some of their albums like Live at Redrocks (was that the title) and Joshua Tree. Maybe they aren't a favorite, but what other mainstream act is better? At least there's something out there that's not sappy like Sting or dreadful like Britanny.

I never got into the Cure and I didn't really start listening to the Pixies until slightly before the breakup.

Yup I agree.. I got into U2 first... then REM and then The Cure.... then I got into other alternative bands and finally found out about the Pixies in 1989. The Pixies completely stood out at first listen and remain my favorite by far, but I still dig U2, REM and the 1/2 of the other bands I used to listen to.

Yes... this did save me from big hair, bad fashion and hair bands in the 80's/early 90's, which I am thankful. When I look at my old prom pic I don't look at my hair and go "doh, State Fair hair."

I've never cared for U2. REM is okay. I don't really know much by the Cure. So, no, those bands aren't linked at all for me. But then, I didn't go to college in the early nineties, either.

The first time I ever heard mention of the Pixies was on Hard Copy. We'd just moved back to the states.

They announced the break-up.

Kinda missed out on those groups the first time around.

I was 7 when Surfer Rosa came out.

Old men of the forum unite.

I think I'm too young for most of those bands to have had too profound an impact on me, although I like all of them to a certain extent.

I think for me, Radiohead opened my ears more than any other band, especially circa OK Computer.

REM for me too, specially Document and Murmur. Don´t know about U2 though (though may warrant me an electronic beating from other Irish on the site) I always found them a bit slick for my liking. The Cure I don´t have anything by, but would not be averse to getting one. The Pixies, I guess they´re okay.

Well, I supose REM have been one of the most important bands in my life. "Automatic for the People" was my first LP, and it's still one of my all-time faves. Also, I like Murmur, Document and Out of Time. I can't understand why many people hate the first 3 albums with Warner, but I guess this often happens when a band has a great commercial success.

I don't like U2. I tried to like them in some ways, but for a strange reason I can't. Maybe 'cause I love several Irish bands.

Never got into the Cure but it's never too late for it.

And finally the Pixies. I listen them for the first time 7 years ago. It was "Here comes your man" on the radio. I thought "What an old fashioned song!" and don't pay attention. I was 8 when Come on Pilgrim was released. At this age I was into Cat Stevens and Mike Oldfield stuff. Unfortunately, it was too early for me.

So, I supose my answer is "No, maybe..., I don't know".
