I haven't tried this yet but it sounded interesting (and I know some of you are pretty culinarily-inclined).

Cook corn on the cob normally, then instead of spreading butter on it, cover it with lime juice, then sprinkle it with chili powder.

Anyone heard of this?

Interesting. I cook corn on the cob quite a lot but have never tried anything other than butter ('cos it's so goddam delicious). I may give this a try if somebody else is willing to be/already has been a guinea pig.

chili powder sounds good. i would still put butter on it though.

we usually put lime and salt on our corn on the cob. but here in Southern California we put lime and salt on everything.

Apparently, the lime juice and the chili powder do something to each other. What that might be, I cannot say.

cyanepps...

thanks that was way good! way better than "I can't believe it's not really butter." I liked the way that the lime cut through the sweetness and the chilli gave it a kick. thanks :)

That's how they eat it in Mexico. They add mayonaise, lime and chili powder. I don't like corn on the cob myself so I've never tried it but it's supposed to taste good.

Mexican put lime on everything they eat. It does add a lot of taste to the meals.

I was trying to make a joke about some song involving the line "you put the lime in the coconut" (or I think that's how it goes). I'm not very good at those things. I apologize. I'm not a big lime fan. I've seen people put it in beer and other drinks.

No worry. These jokes just don't work on non-english speaking people.
Corona only tastes good with lime and salt.

That's different. Tequila alone tastes great, whereas a Corona doesn't.

see, i disagree.
tequila by itself only tastes good after about 5 tequilas with salt and lemon.
but maybe it was just that i always drink bad tequila.

Coron is fine on it's own, I've had to do it when the lime has been lacking, some pub bloke tried to fob us off with a lemon once, I did roll my eyes at him.

Tequilla is nasty, you have to drink a fuck of a lot of it before you can drink it freely, like the double tequilla for fifty pence night we had at uni, that got real nasty

tre,
we also had some fabulous tequila nights at uni.
some of our class would go round to this mansion and drink bottles and bottles of it.
i think our best was 4 1125ml bottles between 8 of us.

it ended badly, but the evenings become quite an institution within our department.

all on a school night - ah, those were the days.

How can something that tastes so bad be so good!? They never repeated that tequilla night, the takings were not huge but the mess was, I spent £8 that night, I remember there being hay everwhere and a lot of people rolling around in it in the middle of the bar, I remember the way I felt at my 9am lecture the following morning, I remember very little else

*****sigh*****

I don't know how it goes in the UK, but here in France it's nearly impossible to find some good tequila. The "best" you can find is Jose Cuervo, which isn't that great at all. I know of a place which sells mexican products and they have Herradura which tastes great, but it's sold at a ridiculously high price. Fortunately last time I went to Mexico (last July) we brought back 8 lts of tequila and somehow didn't get caught by the customs. We went to the city of Tequila and bought directly from a guy who had 6 barrels in his kitchen - great stuff.
Anyway which brands do you have in England?

Oh, and it's supposed that you can't get sick the day after if you only drink 100% agave tequila. At least that's what they say there.

well i haven't actually drunk any tequila in the UK.
but back in NZ, we were poor students so we only drank really rubbish stuff - like it wasn't even made in Mexico....
but it served it's purpose.

and tre,
only one of the 8 made it to lectures the next day and only 2 of us (me included) didn't vomit. ah, those were the days.

vilaiande speaks the truth. most places don't have good tequila. chance are, you've probably only had Cuervo, which is almost invariably vomit-inducing. (though, in a pinch, i will not refuse a shot if someone else is buying).

my favorite tequila is Patron. it's sooo smooth. as with any alcohol, the higher the quality, the better it tastes and the less hangover factor there is (like a good vodka).

it's hard to find good tequila outside of the Southwest, let alone Europe.

when i come to England in December i'll bring some Patron with me.

The best corn is here in Canada! (I just like to razz Tony;)

http://www.town.taber.ab.ca/taber/page33.html

Taber is known as the "Corn Capital of Canada".
"Why does Taber corn taste so good?
This is due to Taber's weather conditions, soil type, and irrigation. The hot summer days warm up the sandy-loam soil, resulting in high heat units- perfect for growing corn. Taber receives more sunlight during the year than any other region in Canada. The cooler nights bring up the sugar in the corn."

Check out the recipe section.

They even have a festival, "Cornfest".

And their metal statue;
