heh heh, I'm reading 'A Confederate General from Big Sur' by Richard Brautigan, it was one of the lines in it...
"I opened the door and Lee Mellon was in the sack with a young girl. Their entwined feet were sticking out one end of the bed. Their heads were sticking out the other end. At first I thought they were fucking and then I could see they weren't. But I hadn't been far behind. The room smelled like cupids gym"
It was either that or "It would take a lot of celery roots to make a battleship"
It's good, and sure I'm right Kathryn, I'm always right!
(btw I haven't been shopping yet don't kill me)

Brautigan. Shoudda known. I wonder if Charles likes him. Oh and Laura Branigan died. Gloria! Glo-ri-a! Sorry.
Tre, I want to type the following in big screeching capital letters but I will exercise restraint: go out and buy some Catholics. Not even an exclamation mark.

Hmm, I think you're talking about the music critics and magazine editors on the Gouge documentary. You'd be surprised by how many people think Trompe le Monde is the best Pixies album. I'm one of them. It's hard to choose a favorite, obviously, but if I had to it'd definitely be Trompe. While there are songs of pure brilliance on every album...(As compared to the "just" amazing ones..) the ratio of brilliant songs to amazing songs is higher on Trompe, in my opinion.
quote: Of course it's going to sound different, there's a hell of a lot of water under the old bridge now, they are all different people, it ill be different, I am not sure there will even be a new pixies album, but f there is one there's no way I will compare it to the earlier stuff because it'll be two different pixies
It's not a matter of sounding "different". Every Pixies album to date has something different about it. The reason some people don't love the new songs is because they just aren't too incredibly amazing. (This is our opinion, again.) Plus, don't you think that the music will have "matured" on a new album? I think that's the main reason to compare the "new Pixies" to the "old Pixies". Charles' work has gotten better and better throughout the years. Kim, while I love her...I just haven't gotten into her music as much. Her early stuff is great (Amps, first Breeders..) but her more recent stuff just doesn't grab my attention. One song released was written by Kim and the other is a cover. I can't wait to hear a Pixies song that Mr. Thompson as written. That'll be something to hear.
Sorry for rambling, as usual..

Actually I was mostly talking about people I know, but yeah it was on the gouge documentary too. Trompe is not my fave and the same goes for my little pixies gang, but thats just our opinion. The "different" discussion has been had already, what I am attempting to get accross is that if you take the song for what it is, a cover, I think it's great, I wouldn't compare it to debaser for example because there is no comparison, I take it for the song that it is and I enjoyed it. Not everyone will agree, but this "It doesn't sound like the pixies" malarky bugged me because of course it won't it's firstly a cover and secondly, the second song they've done together for an age! There's feet to be found and the old routine to settle into, they're doing it well but I think the pixies loving public hs gotten impatient since the reunion, they've been touring for months now and suddenly everyone wants albums and songs of quality and they want them NOW, it's a lot of pressure. There's a hell of a lot of expectations and I think jumping on every little thing they do now will only make it more fevered...
Damn it Nate, you've got me rambling now

Does anybody know how these tribute albums work? I mean, did Charles or the band get to choose which Zevon song they would cover? I ask because I think "Ain't That Pretty At All" was an inspired choice. They gave it their fun nihilistic fun vibe and thus made it true to both the Pixies and Zevon. I can't imagine them doing some other Zevon songs. Maybe "Lawyers, Guns and Money."

Yeah totally; Joe's guitar is way too midrangy, Frank's using the wrong gauge pick, Dave's hitting the snare just a few degrees too far off center, and Kim's not even standing in the right place. It's just not the Pixies.

You think they're just going through the motions? Delivering rote Pixies signifiers? That's grim. I honestly think this is true to the spirit of the band, particularly in the way instruments and song elements get shifted around over the course of the song. More importantly, it sounds like rock and roll to me. That said, I'm taking all of this pretty lightly. I refuse to have any expectations about the reunion to this day, so maybe I'm just more impressed by the sheer surreality of the fact that these songs even exist... |

I don't think Kim really wants more spotlight this time around. I think she and Frank discussed it in a recent interview. She said something about being happy just playing bass. And Frank talked about just being more relaxed about things in general, regarding who does what, IF my memory serves me right. Can anyone back me up? Though it seems Kim's sentiments aren't reflected quite accurately in the two new recordings, but I wouldn't read too much into it. |

Vilainde! I am going to say this in my stern mommy voice (and, yes, I do have such a voice, though I rarely use it with my kid):
go to your room!
Tre, love, I am intimate with The No Disposable Income Monster. We were hot and heavy for a while. Still are sometimes. Payday's around the corner, babe. Payday will call you up on the phone soon!

No I don't think she has asked for it either I just think that perhaps Frank has relaxed a little more and realised that Kim has a lot to offer in her own right. I am not saying he didn't before, but I think maybe he does more now. I would imagine he admires her work with The Breeders.
Who cares anyway, as long as she gets to sing a few with that lovely voice of hers. Of course, Frank has to sing more though. It's Franky boy 'aint it! He's the greatest. Ever!

He said as much in the Spin story. Interesting quote, actually, about his realizing that the audience just loves Kim and will cheer whatever little comment she makes onstage, and how he just keeps quiet now. Or words to that effect.

Great cover. Like this one 1000 times more than Bam Thwok. For some reason or another, I like this amount of polish in a Pixies' song. |
