Can someone please recommend some new music for me?
I've gone back to the mid eighties. It's kind of embarassing to pick up the phone and have the Bronski Beat cranking in the background.
My brother came out and gave me a John Frusciante album that's actually real good. I've got the new PJ Harvey, Cure. Those are both excellent but I've worn them out.
Please help
I'm stagnating over here.
It sure is tough living on the cutting edge.

Seriously, I've been liking the Bob Mould solo stuff lately. Self-titled and Poison Years(kind of a compilation of workbook/black sheets of rain w/ live stuff too), can't get them out of my CD player |

Firewater. Ever heard of 'em? They have a new CD out (well, new around here at least), The Man on the Burning Tightrope. Guitar-driven indie rock meets klezmer meets pub anthems meet brechtian cabaret, and the singer has a splendid baritone. I love them.
They would have been my next pick for the Music Ring if that one was still kicking.
Then of course there's always 50 Foot Wave if you've missed that one.
Another record I can't seem to tire of is Laura Veirs' Carbon Glacier. Guitary singer-songwriter, superbly crafted songs, remind me of early Suzanne Vega, in a good way. Samples here.

Definitely get The Shines album that Dean recommended, Chutes Too Narrow. The first album, Oh, Inverted World is also very good.
They are quite chilled though. I imagine you to be more of a 'rockin' out' kind of guy though.

Hope Of The States - The Lost Riots (kinda tuneful, more rocky Radiohead)
Tanya Donelly - Whisky Tango Ghosts (beautiful, chilled)
Franz Ferdinand - s/t (funky Strokes-ish rock)
Damien Rice - 'O' (supremely excellent Irish singer/songwriter)
Mark Lanegan - Bubblegum (QOTSA meets Johnny Cash, really)
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (think Virgin Suicides-ish Air meets Mogwai or My Bloody Valentine)

The Unicorns: Who Will Cut our Hair.... (Perhaps the greatest record of the past two years)
The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow (Great. Just Great.)
Mclusky: Do Dallas
And to throw in my own two cents:
The Fiery Furnaces: Blueberry Boat
The Silver Jews: American Water
Both of those last two albums I bought in the last month. The Fiery Furnaces one is really cool, somewhat of a concept album and the Silver Jews have got Stephen Malkmus and someone told me that they think that they sound a bit like FB.

Try Black Market Flowers "Bind" or "Thicket". They are a three piece California band, maybe you've already heard of them, that broke up years ago. But, then again, don't all the good one break up. Anyway I like'em, they're kinda noisey and kinda laid back.

I've been listening to Blueberry Boat but it's still not grabbing me. I have a feeling this one is going to need more than three spins.
Also, yes, I was remiss to not recommend Franz Ferdinand...

Hovercraft is a noise-rock three piece
very noisy, effects-laden guitars
bass to kind of anchor things a bit
drums providing the most "coherent" part of the music
I like their stuff a lot. But I am a weird guy. |

Okay I'll start at the top and work my way down. I've got the Holy Barbarians of course Shiney. (Named after a famous book from the beat era by the way). You should check that album out Carolynanna.
I'm not sure on Damien Rice, no offense. I have the first album. I'll admit the guy is talented, but his songs make me want to light some candles, slip into a warm bath (loofa in hand), and have myself a good cry.
Velvet Revolver? Good gym music maybe?

I personally cannot recommend 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Horse of the Dog enough - loud dark - imagine Kings of Leon if they were possessed and taking way too much speed!
If you're having a bit of an 80's moment, try 2manydjs (Soulwax from Belgium's dj work) - brilliant mash ups that work so damn welland their new album as Soulwax is also sounding v.v. good from what I've heard. Or for some early 80's inspired fun Scissor Sisters and Franz Ferdinand.
And if you haven't heard it yet, The Distillers - Coral Fang.
None of these are particularly new, but soooo worth listening to if you haven't discovered them yet. |
