Just wondering : I have some live versions of songs I really love and could hear lots of time in a row and when I listen to them on the album (LP) I hardly can listen them twice in a row...don't you think following treasures could have been better again on the albums?
- Bullet (great intro in live but on the album...)
- The Swimmer ( great song live)
- 21 reasons (so rocky live...)
- Manitoba (not that cute on the album vs live)
- even Black Rider?
Am I the only one to feel this frustration?

Not really with any FB songs. And certainly not the ones you have listed. I'll take Bullet on the album cause there's piano too. I've never heard The Swimmer live, and I think 21 reasons is fun in either case. Manitoba is like a different song live. I like the complexity of the arrangement on the album (this song coupled with Coastline is the one that gets me most excited for Honeycomb). Black Rider is a little more fun live, but the first rendition on the album is a lot of fun, too.
However, I know where you're coming from... that's the way I feel about Ween pre-Chocolate & Cheese. Not even that I dislike the stuff on the first albums, I can't stand to listen to it. But I love those same songs live.

I find that So Hard to Make Things Out and I Want Rock & Roll are much better on live recordings that I have than on the album.

I've only seen Frank live once, but I get the idea that his songs are probably fairly consistent live and on the albums.
With ANY musician, I think there are advantages and drawbacks to both methods. The studio usually allows for more instruments and more time to get it right, but live performances are often more fun and spontaneous.

From solo acoustic sets of the yellow/orange album, to smyt's left behind, Don't clip your wings, I reckon, I like Frank by himself sometimes, it makes me happy.. I dunno, I shouldn't post when I'm drunk.

The one song that is considerably better live is Six-Sixty-Six - if anyone was at Shepherds Bush (for what stands as the last ever Catholics gig) they'll know what I mean, was consistently good in 2001 too. It works so much better SO slow.

I heard alot of the SMYT stuff live before I heard the album, and I preferred the live sound, especially on Manitoba and Horrible Day, I think the Catholics stuff definitely suits the livest possible sound (afterall that's what Frank is so eager to capture with the whole 2-track 1-take shebang), but it depends alot on the venue, atmosphere and tightness of the band on the night, whereas the albums have a consistency which sometimes adds to and sometimes detracts from the thing.

Total agree re- Bullet. Llano del Rio was also ballsed-up compared to the live version, Stupid Me guitar solo was much better in the live version/s I heard, and Nadine had such a great coda/outro live that just isn't there on the studio version.
Having said all that, I still play the studio albums way more than any live recordings get a spin. They are all just too good, despite my occasional quip as above..
