first of all, all the pale boys stuff IS live - they do it live through all kinds of samplers, instruments, effects, etc (or at least they do when they record with david thomas). and since when is doing what no one expects out of character? who else would have inverted a stage name, or gone from the pixies to country-ish stuff in less than a decade? or who would've expected this? no one - he keeps things unpredictable. if you really want to be a fan of an experimental, non-mainstream artist, then you have to take into account that every now and again you're not going to like a record. its called being a bowie/lou reed/neil young fan. they can't all be harvests and still be interesting

This must be very sad!
But it´s great to listen Frank while driving, I like it very loud!

When I listened the first time FBF it made me remind of Bowie (cause he´s allways changing!)

The fact that some of you guys keep calling the FBF stuff "remixes" makes me think you haven't listened to the songs very closely.

They're probably calling them remixes because that's what they most closely resemble; how about "remakes," then?

In an email to Dave Eggers from Jonathan Lethem on the McSweeney's site; posting it because it's apt and alligned with my view, more or less:

What I loved in our talk about Dylan was the notion we began to isolate — the classic fan/critical impulse to choose a period in Dylan's work as "the only good part" and then to bemoan all the rest in one sweeping denunciation — as though Dylan ought to be ashamed of his continued productivity, as though the bulk of his work was a sort of crime or disease which threatens the listener and his or her relationship to the admired albums. And as you pointed out, behind the presumption of that kind of dismissal always hides — poignantly — a kind of raw, fearful confusion at the artist's continued searching, his dogged practice of his art, his willingness to experiment, grow and fail. As though a switch is flipped when an artist is too prolific, too generous, and it suddenly becomes an affront to the audience."

Though I'll buy it when it comes out just like I do all of FB's other work, I have to agree with a lot of the aforementioned posters with their assessment of the album as being the worst of his career---by a very long shot.

I don't think it's meant to be a "proper" album, though; it's meant to be a little something extra, as he's said in interviews.

And then part of me---a very small part, mind you---- suspects people hold their criticisms back because they fear FB himself might be perusing these posts. To criticise as we are, however, is to show respect. To criticize in the trivial, petty and malicious way demonstrated by the British press, however---which will no doubt sacrifice FBF at the critical altar---is irresponsible and inexcusable. The very fact that we visit this site time and time again is ample testimony to our devotion to his work, even though some of us may be suprised and disappointed now and then.

Can't wait for Honeycomb, though...

i think some of you may be taking it all a bit too seriously...i dunno about the project but it seems like frank sessioned some singing and the 2 pale boys are doing the bulk of the "work" involved in the songs' production.

it doesnt sound like a labor of love on frank's part..just a way to sing some songs now that he's taken the time since his pixies era to learn/practice singing (learning to sing better, by his own admission)..*shrug*

too serious maybe so.... i was just putting my 2 cents in.... it just seemed an illogical step (now i know those of you who say "thats the point", frank does things which are'nt logical but still work)....

anyways, i hope he does'nt stay with this notion, (not a labour of love... i hope not).... learning to sing better (is that possible).... even since day one some would regard frank as screaming and hollering, but it controlled and repeatable, he has every crack (in his voice) shreek and whine down to a tee, the man is in my opinion one of the best vocalists around today....
i agree with captain maxi's idea that people are often a bit afraid to not like (or critise) their heros music but its healthy i rekon.... (for weezer fans) who else agrees that weezer's blue and pinkerton albums are amazing and the last two have been utter rubbish (for once the critics have it right).... so many songwriting and lyrical "blunders" on the last especially....

i feel im beinging to rant....again...

i have not heard a single one of these tracks cause i canne download, but all this talk has really got me interested in hearing what has happened to the songs.
sure i don't think it'll become a desert island disc, but i don't think thats frank's intention of doing this...just a little experiment that we get to hear.

While I basically agree, I think there's a definite difference between not liking something and considering it "utter rubbish."

Wow some of you guys are being way too harsh,I've given it a few listens to and to be honest it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

There's a few tracks that I'm not too keen on,but I wouldn't say they were particularly bad, there's some bad ideas thrown in there(Waaaay too much brass on Holiday Song) but that doesn't necessarily make it a complete write off.

Must say I'm enjoying Where is my mind and Nimrods son,had to laugh at the "Try this trick and spin it...yeah" bit in WIMM though.Heh

Just to join in the fray, this is the first time I have EVER considered not purchasing anything put out by FB. Usually I have on pre-order. After hearing the Cactus sample track, this project doesn't interest me in the least. Hate to say it, but it's gonna suck, and he won't sell many. I wish he'd reconsider keeping this in the can.

i only have 'cactus', and the more i listen to it the more i like it. now i love it. considering this whole FBF release is a little bonus release, this is a very welcome addition to my collection. it's definitely not the "next frank black album", so everyone needs to chill out.

I find that the more I listen to cactus the more annoyed I get,It's the constant echoing throughout the track that throws me off a bit.

Just my two cents here since everyone's slamming the hell out of the two pale boys tracks. This was not intended to make the songs better than the originals, it was to give a new take on the tracks by another group(two pale boys). Personally I love all ten tracks that ive heard, its a bizarre unique take on the pixies songs.

I'm probably more apt to like it since I like electronic stuff along with rock but mostly I just like old Prodigy, old Crystal Method, old Fatboy Slim kind of and a few other records, there hasnt been a lot of great electronic stuff in the last few years imo.

Some of the songs on here are just bizarre reworkings and great in my opinion, innovative reworkings like levitate me with its bizarre bells and string swells. Its a different sound from what we used to with Frank but this isn't really Frank. This albums probably in my top 25 favorite albums at the minute and its rotating in my winamp playlist and i usually listen to every track no matter what song plays.

Anyway, I love it. Of FB releases, I like it better as a album than probably everything but fb, toty, dits, and smyt(blasphemy I know)but it's not a fb album. I don't care for the other two pale boys stuff I've heard but this is excellent imo. Flame me if you want :)

not to nit pick or start some ellitism shit, but i dunno why people wanna compare this to techno...well, i do know why, the spacial atmospheres and structure are very reminiscent of electronic music sequencing.

that said, i dont think mixmaster morris would call it electronic music, though he could probally easily mix it into a set of chillout. i plan on searching out a vinyl copy (if available) to add to my own chillout collection. not really a fan of what ive heard, but some beatless vocals with lush backgrounds would be some nice flavor to the mix.

recommended chill (since im on a very annoying roll here...hehe):

speedy j "g-spot"
global communication (members of chapterhouse) - "76:14"
irresistable force (mixmaster morris) - "flying high"
orb "orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld"

the speedy j + orb albums have some minimal beatwork in it...speedy j's leaning toward straight 4/4 beat techno on some tracks and the orb's a bit of groove dub.

What I don't like about FBF:
It's all Pixies- and still the same ten or twelve early Pixies songs.
No new songs
Why not realease SSMVGD and why release FBF? SSMVGD is a point in his artistic career: Kingly cave, Sleep, PanAmerican highway...
First CD, Pixies demo, cool but what? I prefer a good solo show with Frank Black and Black Francis songs
Second CD, Two Pale Boys stuff: I don't even want to talk about it, so disappointing. The hello recording club stuff was better.

So, in conclusion: HOOONNNEEEYYYYCCCOOOOMMMMB

Does anyone know where I can get more stuff (except from Soulseek which doesn't work on my PC) from CD2 of FrankBlackFrancis?

I really like Monkey Gone To Heaven, but I'm interested in hearing what some of the other songs sound like, especially since people keep saying how shit they are!

more people are way too serious about this "album". i don't consider it at all a new album mostly because there is nothing new to review in it. just an old demo tape and some funny reworks of old songs. it's more of an officially released bootleg that will sell few copies (but many more than if it was released before the reunion) and will make happy those who scan daily p2p to find rare stuff, much as the purple tape release which after all was appreciated only by hardcore fans and not by the average doolittle-only newbie. consider it a gift to the geek collectors. after all that's what fb himself said when he announced it in this very forum: uber fans only. the rest won't miss anything but the collectionists will be happy. what's wrong with that? and i prefer this kind of release to any stupid best of\rip of compilation like wave of mutilation, that come without bonus material.

yes, and i sort of agree. it's not too bad. i'm just saying... whatever you wanna call it, people can give an opinion on it... seeing as it will be available in shops and some people might wanna know what peoples opinions are before they buy it.
