from what ive heard i can only hope what's floating around isnt final cuz...well...not all the tracks are produced/mixed well. background noise, shrill as hell high end on some tracks, improper track ballance...like i said before, i'll hold off a "review" until i get a final pressed copy in my hands...etc etc etc |

Haha screw the lot of you, I love these reworkings :). It's a really sparse sounding record and really refreshing. I think there are one or two weaker songs (Cactus, Veloria) but just listen to Where is my mind? or Into the White or The holiday song. After a few more listens I bet you guys will love it too.
Also check Soulseek if you still havent gotten a copy.

I always thought this reunion thing will be a break in FB&C career and then he'll go back with the boys and make new stuff. Now after hearing cactus I'm not sure about it. Maybe he wants to take a new way.

I don´t know but I think that if they break up (hope not), it´s because it must be like that. And Frank will continue doing better and better... Like he always does!

Looks like some of you people are getting your wish, almost. Latest estimates from Cooking Vinyl suggest that FBF could be held back up to two years, for various reasons. The new FB album will be out sooner, but the Man's had to go back into the studio for a few retouches.

I meant that more in terms of the terminology of "selling out" and "electronic music" - the album is neither; I guess my own problem is that I presuppose a minimum of reason with some people.

So the sentence should read, "Latest rather large gorilla sitting on an elephant's back using a personal organizer from Cooking Vinyl suggests that FBF could be held back up to two years, for various reasons."
Well, THAT clears it up, doesn't it? <g>

Just found this review at http://newflux.blogspot.com/2004/07/letter-in-your-writing-doesnt-mean.html (sorry if it's a repost):
Frank Black Francis & Two Pale Boys "Cactus" - This is a selection from the forthcoming Frank Black Francis project, which finds Frank Black reworking several Pixies classics with David Thomas' side men, Two Pale Boys. The record is mostly quite mellow, recasting familiar tunes with low-key, atmospheric arrangements. The best of the new versions play up ideas and themes which were already present in the material: "Monkey Gone To Heaven" is stripped of its bombast, and is set to music which would not sound out of place on an underwater documentary soundtrack; "The Holiday Song"'s lead guitar hook is replaced with festive horns; and "Caribou"'s chimey keyboards and woozy horns sound like a Beach Boys record played at half speed. Nothing on the record is an outright failure, but Black's version of the Kim Deal song "Into The White" does not sound particularly inspired by anything other than novelty, and the jazz/dub fusion on "Where Is My Mind?" already feels dated in spite of being quite pretty.
"Cactus" is the obvious highlight of the album for me, building on the skeletal arrangement of the original with looped backing vocals, a menacing bass chug, and occasional horn stabs. It captures the basic essence of the song, but feels even more desperate in its yearning and masochistic desire. The arrangement evokes a sense of vertigo and delirium, stomach churning neuroses and sweltering heat. It's the closest anything from this record comes to besting the original Pixies recording, and hints at a promising new direction for Black when he resumes his solo career after the current Pixies reunion.

I`ve listened a few times and I still think it´s a very good work. I think that Frank wanted to show how this music that we all like so much can be listened in another prespective! He can allways surprise me, and that´s what is so great about him! (just my opinion)

I'm extremely disappointed by these re-workings to say the least, these mixes are awful. The album sounds so stripped-down. Definitely not digging the techno, or the trombone. It sounds like the whole album was recorded at about 10 BPM.
Oh, and kromkamp, you are correct in the tracks being cringeworthy. I actually cringed during Velouria. |

My faves from FBF are Caribou, Into the white and Wave of Mutilation. I think Frank has never sung so well on those songs.
Cactus is the one I can't listen to. |

kinda on/off topic...but whatever...if you kinda dig on the slower melodic soundscape style check out a 90s act called Codeine.
they did 2LPs and 1EP of really nice slowcore with a grunge-era edge...lovely minimal noise rock. and its 100% brass-section-free. |

I kinda like the remixes....hardly torture to listen to.....what I do like about Frank black is the fact that he does try new stuff, keeps it interesting.....I find it kinda sad that some people seem to prefer that he didnt try anything new....its kinda funny that for all the innovators in the popular arts, there are always people bitching about one turn or another the artists take that doesnt appeal to them. |

Don't be selfish, share Frank. How else will we kill pop if you guys won't share good music with the Masses. Imagine the days when good music is the main stream and shit music is the underground. The way the world should be.

hold on there.... i agree experiementing is well and good and neccessary but i would have though an artist as good as Frank could easily seperate the chaff from the wheat... as he says himself he owes fan at least the courtesy of not releasing all the stuff he comes up with, he would freely admit that its sort of a filtering process (and since he is undoubtly a genious songwriter), he comes up with more consistantly good (excellent)material than anyone else.... this electronic remixing shit, is exactly that....
1. after so many years of not playing pixies stuff. he seems to have gone one step too far in scraping the barrel of pixies material by re-recording (if i can call it recording) these tracks....
2. also after going back to the live recording process with the catholics and liking it so much (because of the realness of it and it not being a brushed up replica of a real suitation) why is he allowing this remixing, beep bob stuff... its completely outa character...
i dont mean to offend anyone's taste of music... but there is music you can respect even if you dont like it... i own all of the pixies and frank blacks material, but this is one i wont be buying and its a shame (because of his consistant quality to date)......
is he following in bob mould's footsteps (great and consistant)... and then release some muck electronica "modulate" or something like that.... (they call it experimentation and thats fine, but its results that matter, dont release muck)...
people say that its all personal taste and music is subjective.... but everyone knows a good book from a bad book, or a well-written news paper from a tabloid and i believe music is the same..... |

After 19 years (???) in music business and still trying to make up new stuff... We should give some respect to the Man, even if you don't like this record.
P.S.: I haven't got enough time to burn it on CD, Rita, so I have only listened it one or two times (My family hates Frank, so I can only listen to it in my car). I don't have a formed opinion about the whole thing, but Velouria is quite a cool track.
