Quite frankly, these songs are the most cringeworthy I have ever heard. They are f'ing *dire*.
I think the backlash of 0/10 reviews for this monstrosity after gaining nothing but positive feedback for the last year may send FB into a fetal position in the corner of his bedroom :) |

Really?? I did not hear them but if this does not sound like Frank Black I am not interested neither...I do not want Frank becoming commercial !! After this whole noisy and non-finishable Pixies reunion I hope Frank will come back like before ! |

I admit that I'm not a huge fan of electronic stuff or the remixes in general (someone was saying it's all done with real instruments elsewhere), but I do admire FB for playing around a bit and trying stuff out. And there are some decent mixes on it, too, but I obviously prefer the originals. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone that doesn't.
I don't think that's the point, though. I think it's just FB dabbling in something new, maybe a bit more edgy and non-traditional, and that's what art's all about. Just because I don't appreciate it the same way as the rest, doesn't mean there won't be others who love it.

I withheld my real feelings about this. Now that kromkamp broke the ice, I have the courage...
I downloaded the MP3s from a newsgroup last week. I couldn't resist. Gotta hear what Frank's up to, you know? Unfortunately I have to say that "cringeworthy" is not an exaggeration. Although was initially cold to the idea of redoing Pixies songs, I gave it several chances. Dislike soon turned into repulsion.
I introduced my wife to it the other day. She loves the Pixies and Frank. I didn't tell her what I thought of it, I just played it for her to get her unsullied opinion. She said, "Now I feel like Frank sold out." This is from a woman who LOVED the idea of a Pixies reunion.
LBF, I'm curious to know why you take kromkamp's comments so personally. WTF are you, Frank's personal Thought Police? Or is it best to be a Frank uberzombie and accept everything he does as the absolute gospel even though you think it sounds like crap? |

I haven't heard the songs, but I sort of get the idea that this is Frank's "Explode Together." Maybe not, though.

Hmmmm. It's not even the fact that it's electronic. It's the fact that things don't fit together nicely at all, which makes things sound out of time, out of, generally tune messed up and just BAD. |

i personally like it - its a different approach with some amazingly talented people. its not going to be his new style or anything like that, its clearly a one off thing. i guess if you are familiar with the work the pale boys have done with david thomas it makes it a bit less surprising

I agree that these tunes are not that good, some are just annoying, but at the same time I think it's cool that Frank is experimenting...

i quite like it. i find it hard to describe. some songs sound like a freaky style of jazz and others sound like frank is having a lot of fun with them. holiday song cracks me up cause it sounds like something from a marching band. his vocals come through very nicely and it gave me a totally different perspective on the songs.
i'm a bit surprised how many people really don't like it. but to each his own. i played this for some of my friends who are big fb/pixies fans and it didn't do much for them. but i don't think frank is selling out by releasing something like this. if anything i think it may turn some people off. anyways i still hopes it gets released.

I love the music. It is VERY Excellent.
BUT.. Frank should not be singing all ballad style. It doesn't work at all. In the very least, there should be shitloads of effects on the vocals. I realize there are some effects, so maybe it's the style that's all shitty. Bottom line: No more crooning, or whatever he is doing. Please don't sing like that again Frank.
Thanks, 1c |

I think the echo on the MF'er on Nimrod's Son encapsulates everything I don't like about these versions. They just seem too dramatic, and I think the vocals sound really separate from the music, as if they were ingredients thrown into a pot that don't quite mix. |

I like the originals better but it's really not like FB is selling out this music won't be a succes like everything FB released failed to sell to large crowds
BTW I love Holiday Son I think it's even better than the original
and don't forget that this will be on a double disc with pixies demos I mean it's not like this is the new Frank Black album just a quickie
how many people moan about the crap quality of the kitchen tapes? It was on a live album you know.... not that it was the follow up to TOTY

I like all of them, except Cactus. Some of the song are brought in such a different atmosphere, and I like that. Like Velouria, which sounds really dark, and a little scary. I was a little sceptical about the fact this album would be one with techno remixes. But it's not techno at all! The sounds of real instruments make this album sounds pure. And it's so different to the originals, you cannot compare it to the old stuff. This is Frank Black doing Pixies songs, not Black Francis
I'm bored with the valleys and bored by the peaks. So I bought a ticket to the Pixies |

I think it's cool that he's done something different with the 'old standards' and I really don't see how anyone can consider this to be "selling out" - the Two Pale boys is hardly a duet with Britney Spears afterall. As for liking/not liking the songs, I thought they were amazing on first listen, and, as I've said before they would be great as b-sides etc, but I dont really think they work in an album context. But then FBF sounds like it is going to be a mishmash of demos and curios, which this will fit into really well, and keep everyone amused until Honeycomb finally (finally) arrives.
If nothing else these tracks are responsible for my late discovery of Pere Ubu, and that alone entirely redeems it

I personally don't feel like he's "sold out." It's not like he's going to get rich off of this record, anyway. And I believe my wife used those words because she felt he'd gone one step too far in recycling the Pixies' material. And blah blah blah, I realize it's a one-off experiment, and blah blah blah who am I to tell him what he can do with his music blah blah blah, but this is the first time I've actually disliked a Frank Black record, and I find that shocking in its own right. Bring on Honeycomb, please! |

I haven't heard any of it, but if it really is substandard, I am concerned that Frank might burn off some of the good will the reunion has earned him. I can deal with "substandard", mostly because the man's standard is so high. If the whole package is presented as something like "for FB nut-cases only", and reviewers know it, no harm done. I just want Frank to get full benefit of any post-reunion bounce. |

I don't like them. There's real sense of detachment here. Like a bad art installation.
As for this being 'Frank Black doing Pixies songs', that's not exactly so is it? Rcently, he's been happy to play more than a few Pixies songs, with little variation on how they've always been. I've yet to see Frank dig out a synthesiser or a trumpet to help him get through 'Cactus', for example.
Part of me thinks that the whole affair is covering up for something. The vagueness of the release, the constantly shifting release date... |

maybe FB's taking a page out of Dylan's book and doing his own "Self-Portrait" album, which Dylan homself said was a big f-you to his lame(r) fans. Consider the title...its about as close to "Self-portrait" as you can get and terms like "cringeworthy" "horrid" very much like fans of Dylans responses to "self-portrait"

i dunno how you can accuse any of these tunes as "selling out"...all this stuff couldnt really make it on any commercial radio.
frank works a lot with practicing how to sing, as an artist..looking to improve his craft...this sounds like an excuse to sing and let others put a little bit of melodic soundscape behind it. im not a fan of what ive heard, but i couldnt imagine any of it getting airplay outside of college radio where his work is already pretty known.

for what it's worth.. i have yet to hear FBF, but if i dislike the music when i do, i'm certain i wouldn't be as hard on it as some of you on this thread. if you can't stand it, fine. just refrain from accusations of sellling out. he's not selling soup and cars.
the saddest aspect of online file sharing is that projects like this receive public judgement long before they can receive a proper release. |

i heard that Frank actually owns a grocery store in LA, in which case, technically, he is selling soup. just for the sake of argument.

I thought the album was interesting, and I've always enjoyed hearing the artists different takes on different songs - that's why I enjoy collecting demos of favorite bands. but i'd wish they'd put more effort into the mix - it sounds like it was made in some hurry. I am very happy that the man wants (dares) to experiment a little, and if it's not a big artistic or commercial success - so what? But it should be released as a die-hard fan only release, or he'll get slaughtered by the reviewers. But that wouldn't be the first time either... |

1.) It's rare that I feel I have much in common with other fans of so many of the musicians and things that I'm a fan of and 2.) I very rarely agree with things I read on this board.
So for me it bodes well that most of the folks here are hatin' on the FBF.
I've heard "Cactus" and I think it's cooler than school. Some of you guys, especially those a' you talking about how FBF might have negative consequences on Frank's career, are taking it too seriously. If ya don't like it, don't buy it.
And "three cheers" for robotblood for making some fine points. His second paragraph especially. |

i think there was a suggestion that the leaked tracks may not have actually been finished ? (ie not fully prepared for release)
I've listened to them and they are good, but then i usually like different mixes, remixes and alternate versions of my favourite artists.
i'll def.buy it when it comes out.
