If you only knew me. The fact is, you don't. You haven't been around long enough to know me. You don't know my position with Mel. You don't know me like Mel knows me. She's a big girl, she can defend herself. Thus my "I wouldn't be Jim if I passed up this opportunity" comment.
You're not allowed to call me a prick or an asshole until you get to know me. That's not fair.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

OK, I saw my name at the beginning of the thread, and now its my turn to rant.
Just kidding. I've been aware for a bit that I can be involved in a bit of the thread derailing, and I apologise for that, I realise it can irritate people. It ticks me off a little I guess when I see people I don't know talking between themselves on here rather than leaving discussions open, so I understand your point, Jim, Malax, Crouton, and all the others. I have tried to some extent to cut back on that, but its easy to get dragged in (especially now I've met a number of the other members here). I'll try and behave in the future =)... seriously, I'll try to stay on track. For the record I think Simon Bumblebeeboy is not so bad on this front.
Actually, I was going to start a little rant about people posting two or three times in a row when they could put it in one - but I realise this is not the place (Its some sort of race to overtake people anyway, somewhat like Highlander)

Right. I don't normally get involved in this mud slinging, but this is ridiculous. I can understand how some of you may be offended by what Jim has said, and how he has said it, but he is right, and topics have been deviating too much. I do believe it is the only way he could've said it, and I think a lot of you are taking it the wrong way. At the same time, I, as much as anyone else, do not want a robotic forum of highly moderated and controlled posting, but you've got to see, that's not what Jim is asking for as far as I can see, and I'm pretty middle of the road when it comes to the forum cliques that have developed recently and have existed since I started coming here. Not that these are a bad thing, of course, in fact the tight-knit-ness of this forum is so much more appealing than others I've been to.
Even so, I do believe that inter-thread 'chit-chat' should be cut down. Either that or create a new henhouse. I remember the henhouse, but I never posted in it. Why? Because I always felt like I was in the middle of the conversation, which is how I've felt with a lot of posts recently.
I like you all, you know, and I hate to sound like I'm siding with the North Americans, but I cannot help but agree with them. Like they are saying, don't become tame and robotic, but if you've got something to say that's probably best to say over MSN, then do so.

Wow, this thread seems to have really gotten out of hand. I guess I'll put in my two cents here.
quote: Sorry to alienate people here but most of the time, it would seem the derailing happens when people start talking about each other, due to the fact they know each other on a personal level.
Yeah, I think I agree here. As I said in the thread that led to the creation of this one, I don't much care whether something is on- or off-topic, serious or nonsensical, as much as I care whether more than one or two other people will be interested in reading it. Granted, you can't always know this ahead of time (I'm sure I've written plenty of posts that didn't interest anyone in the least), but when it comes down to what's basically a private conversation between two or three people, it might be better to take it to e-mail or MSN/AIM, or (as Jim suggested) a new thread just for stuff like that.
I think one disadvantage to a board like this over an e-mail list or newsgroup is that you can't change the subject line when a thread starts to veer into another topic. Sure, you can make a new thread, but I'm generally not a supporter of making a lot of unnecessary new threads. That's more in regards to tangents, though, and I don't think they're really the problem in this case.

I'm just baffled at the lack of respectfulness. Why are there enemies up in heya? Isn't that a little silly?
I agree that there has been a lot of posting that would be better taken to its own thread or to a chat client or even the FB IRC channel (info in the FAQs). That was a really cool thing for getting to know people -I wish we could stick it within the forum code itself it would be easier. We all tend to veer off in inspired spontaneity at times, but there also tends to be a natural understanding that others will soon be irritated at the lack of respect and that others are trying to get something out of the threads too, so it's kept in check as much as possible. Sure people go over the line, but then there is an acknowledgement (usually without a complaint having to be made, and usually light-hearted) and on we go. Diplomacy is an art, and I'm not saying I've figured it out in the least, but I try.
The issue has come up many times, through several different people's comments, so the lambasting of El Barto is pretty over the top. Many people have stopped coming here altogether because the common sense of decorum has been disregarded for long past the point of reasonable patience. Yes, complaint could have been phrased differently, a generalized joking recommendation or observation usually works best. Name-calling and such in return is just ridiculous, and it's making me think twice about hanging out here aymore as well. If STITCHES, MIRV, and swimmer and Ebb etc. couldn't do it, that's saying something. I will just have to put my hopes in food, the great equalizer.
Right, so who wants some of my kick ass quesadillas that won't give you the runs like floop's do?

Well, I understand that some of you may be upset about the fact that some topics get out of control, but it doesn't happen systematically.
Personally, I don't like all that instant message thing, mainly because I like to think about what I am writing (I know that sometimes it doesn't seem that obvious).
If a topic is interesting enough, there will be some people answering. If not, the door is open for pointless posts (I can say this as I was the one who started the spoiled topic). It's like any other human society. It's OK as long as someone doesn't continuously spoil every thread.
I am much more sensitive to the way people express themselves. If you are bothered by someone's behavior, it's understandable, but there is no excuse for not being polite. Everything can be discussed in a civilised way. It's not even about diplomacy, it is possible to argue in a civilised way.
PS : What is currently happening in the general frank black discussion forum is much more worrying, i think.
At least we still have the secret forum where we are able to post exclusively among civilised people. And with Frank. |

i pretty much agree with the consensus. i don't think there's anything wrong with going off on tangents, or taking the conversation in new directions. that's how conversation works in real life.
but it is lame to turn every thread into a chat-room style "in joke" thing. but then, i'm guilty of more than my fair share of stupidity, so i guess i shouldn't talk. it seems like it's usually self-evident when it's appropriate or not.
sorry if anyone has been miffed by any derailing i may have done.
i just want to get along.

I apologize for any hurt feelings floop, I am sure you make incredible, top-notch quesadillas; and I also am sorry for derailing the derailing thread, but I wanted to bring a little levity to the thread. I think my ode to ProverbialCereal's photoshop skills and floop's quesadilla diplomacy via the topic of derailment was fairly ingenious.
We can either laugh it off, eat, and celebrate, or we can clean up a giant quesadilla from the tracks. I'm a lover and a procrastinator. I prefer to clean up later.

apl, my feelings weren't hurt. i just thought the diarrhea jokes from you were getting a little old.
but that's all in the past now. i've come to accept that your diarrhea jokes are, in fact, hilarious. and i look forward to them..
i hope to see more diarrhea-related jokes aimed at me in other threads that have nothing to do with me, or diarrhea, because that will be funny.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way about all these threads going off topic, but I won't speak for anyone else. If they choose to say anything, so be it, but let it be known that there are a good amount of people who are sick of 95% of the topics being derailed.
I'm only having a go at those who are most responsible for it, and that would include you and Tre and Gypsy and Cheeseman (sometimes) and bumble (sometimes). I don't see what's so hard about you guys starting your own thread to talk back and forth in instead of ruining other threads with your personal back and forth chat. There's a difference between going off topic (to a different topic) and derailing a thread for your own personal chat, turning it into a chatroom or IM session. That music thread is a PERFECT example of it.
Around the birth of the forum, we had the Henhouse thread for back and forth chat, raunchy chat, etc. etc. and that worked out perfectly. Why don't you take the liberty in starting your own similar thread?
I apologize for wording my response the way I did, but frustration does that to a guy.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times.
very mature 'naming' the biggest sinners. hey look, we're all brits too... strange. and bullshit. i could name a dozen other regulars who quite often 'derail' threads too, in fact jim you used to be quite good at that too, remember? sorry if this has been brought up, i haven't had chance to read rest of thread yet....
And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around. |
