Yesterday i searched in vain for reviews of the Amsterdam show, already thinking that they didn't bother to review the gig because the band already had played on Pinkpop fest a few weeks ago.
But today there were two that i found: one in the Volkskrant, and one in the (freely available in public transport) Metro. I couldn't find the Volkskrant review online at www.volkskrant.nl and i didn't want to type it all over (sorry), but the one of the Metro can be found at www.clubmetro.nl/metro/" target="_blank">http://www.clubmetro.nl/metro/ and then click "vandaag" ("today"). The coming week it will be available under "vorige uitgaven" ("previous editions") and then 20040708. It's a pdf file so you'll need Acrobat for that.
Here's a copy/paste. It's Dutch and i don't have the time to translate it but maybe someone else has :-)
Pixies meesters in strak popliedje
(review: Luc Wierts)

Hi planetofsound,
I read the review in Metro, but I am curious what the Volkskrant said. Can you give a short summary.
Thanks.

PiaS, you got mail....
The article was really quite positive. It started that in Amsterdam they visibly enjoyed it, while at Pinkpop and Werchter it was looking a bit static and routineous. And it ended with "after 15 years the work of the Pixies still incomparible and undefinable". "Hearing Kim Deal sing "So Long So Long" with the same pretended bored intonation, was already enough to be convinced that the Pixies were having a go. And the Pixies having a go, was something that already 15 years ago not many other bands could compete with". |

OK i just made a jpeg scan of the article and uploaded it at http://public.fotki.com/planetofsound/
It's readable (only just) but remember: it's in Dutch. Also for this one: if someone wants to translate it; be my guest :) |

here's a translation from Babel Fish... quite rough.
Pixies masters in tight headstock song In fact as from the first tones of ` Gouge Away a won game was which the Pixies played last Tuesday in the Heineken Music hall in Amsterdam. The legendary link was this see spring already on most of large the festivals, but hardly gave room concerts in the buurt. No wonder that the concert in Amsterdam in no time had been sold off with people who Black Francis, kim deal, Joey santiago and David Lovering sees again savages if perhaps never had seen by the break - up in 1992nd ` Sell Out read tour 2004, were on the sold t-shirts. But for sell out the Pixies much were too passionate, were roar of Black Francis too raw and betrayed laugh of kim deal, during continuous applause after intro of ` Caribou, which they also under the impression were of the frenzied fans. The volksfeestje had been already used with the second number ` Debaser ' and came in a flow acceleration with the Mexican punk of ` Isla the Encanta ' and the still quicker ` Something against you ', to take back gas vervolgens with a slow version of ` Wave or Mutilation.' Almost thirty numbers became there doorheen nervous as if it was the last hour that the link would play ever still. For the five thousand fans one after the other hits, although toegift ` Gigantic perhaps some real Pixies-hit have been ever. Black Francis and co. distributes in simple, but retestrak carried out, indiepopliedjes. As the boasted pronouncement sounds, ` play soccer is simple, but ly play soccer is most difficult what is not there, only for the Pixies. (review: Luc Wierts) |

I'll give it a shot now... it's probably far from perfect but this Babel Fish translation is hilarious :)
Pixies masters of tight pop songs
In fact it was an already won match right from the first tones of "Gouge Away", the show that the Pixies played last Tuesday in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. The legendary band could be seen this spring on most major festivals, but hardly did any gigs in venues in the area. No wonder that the concert in Amsterdam was sold out in no time from people who wanted to see Black Francis, Kim deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering again, or maybe never had seen them due to the break-up in 1992. "Sell Out Tour 2004" could be read on the t-shirts they were selling. But for a sell-out the Pixies were far too driven, Black Francis's scream too raw and the laughing of Kim Deal betrayed -during the neverending applause after the intro of "Caribou"- that they were impressed themselves too about the out-of-their-minds fans. The people's festivities already started with the second song "Debaser" and came into a next level with the Mexican punk of "Isla De Encanta" and the even faster "Something Against You", to take some gas back eventually with a slow version of "Wave Of Mutilation". Almost thirty songs were furiously played like it was the last hour that the band would ever play. To the 5000 fans, all 'hits' piece by piece, although encore "Gigantic" might have been the only real Pixies-hit ever. Black Francis and co. are widespreading simple, but tight as hell, indiepop songs. Like the famous saying goes "Playing football is simple, but to play football simple is the hardest thing there is"... just not for the Pixies.

I was also at the concert, but couldn`t find any comment yet on the concert in the newspapers. Het Parool had a "recensie" but it is not on the internet, so Planetofsound thanks for posting that Volskrant review. I had a great time out there hearing the pixies for the first time in mylive, despite the fact that I really donot like the Heineken Music Hall. It was a great performance! There was only one critical aspect. I read that on Pinkpop, they played rather routine and statically. It was said earlier here that in the HMH it was much less static. I disagree with this, because I have never seen a band play so static as the pixies. Is this typically how the pixies perform? I think when they groove more into the music and move more they could sound just that little extra better. |

Well after touring for several months now, you'd expect them to be a bit tired or not liking it EVERY night... Do YOU love your work/school/whatever EVERY day? I think not.
But I noticed them being not very enthusiastic as well. It surprised me as I hadn't thought of that. But like I mentioned above; it is understandable.
