everyone knows that most of the big recording companies are shat. this is a critical time in the music industry with all of the music available over the internet and the massive record companies trying to control their interests. i'm sick of all the manufactured bubblegum souless shit being mass produced and shoved down are throats. frank has already had a huge impact on the business side of music. he has shown how a musician can make top quality music in copius amounts without big record companies and still make a descent profit. and i have a feeling he and the pixies will have a large positive impact on how the industry changes.
look what frank has done to date on the business side of his music. he knows how to tour and make money. the catholics carry their own fuckin equipment!! he says he records two track, partially because it is cheaper- but only top quality musicians can pull this off and make it sound so good and full of soul. he owns all of his music. he distributes through independant record labels largely through his terms- i'm assuming. the pixies are selling live recordings after their own shows to make some extra $$$ (and providing a fuckin awesome product!). they slyly released a new pixies track exclusivley through itunes. frank also released some if his b sides exclusively through itunes. he markets himself by doing interviews, playing record stores before shows, and making appearances on this site! he takes the time to talk to his fans and listen to what they say! this is called thinking outside of the box. the big record companies do not understand that concept.
frank continues to do all this work so he can make a descent living so he can continue doing what he loves. and he's done all this while making an assortment of creative, intelligent, top quality music. and i get pissed off when some misinformed people say he is "selling out" by reuniting the pixies. frank deserves a fuckin grammy award for the hardest working musician!! he and the pixies deserve every cent they make. word.
any thoughts?

Here's a NY Times article that echoes the sentiment:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/04/arts/music/04KAPL.html?8br=&pagewanted=print&position=
July 4, 2004 D.I.Y. Meets N.R.L. (No Record Label) By FRED KAPLAN N the last decade, Maria Schneider, who regularly wins prizes for best composer and best big-band arranger in jazz, has made three albums on the Enja record label. Each sold about 20,000 copies — very good numbers for jazz. She didn't make a dime off any of them. On two of them, she lost money.
So recently, she went off the grid. She became the first musician to sign with a company called ArtistShare. Rather than go through labels, distributors and retailers, ArtistShare sells discs over the Web and turns over all the proceeds (minus a small fee) to the artist.
Her new CD, "Concert in the Garden," went on sale last Thursday exclusively through www.mariaschneider.com. If it sells one-quarter as many copies as any of her previous discs, she will do better than break even. If it sells half as many, she will earn tens of thousands of dollars.... [rest of article at link]
Fred Kaplan is a columnist for Slate and jazz critic for The Absolute Sound.

Of course, it's a major advantage for an artist (and for their fans) to have their CDs available in actual record stores. (Frank's are, of course, except for Oddballs, but it sounds like Ms. Schneider's aren't.)

Erebus, good article. Also, very well put Fumanbru. It is pretty exiting to think of all the new avenues that the internet is providing deserving musicians to make some money.
It really chaps my ass that talentless hacks can make large sums of money by being beautiful and catering to the uninformed (unaware?) masses their homogonized crap. While incredible artists who constantly produce unique and groundbreaking music struggle to make a decent living doing what they do so well. Not that they are all living in squalor, but it just seems backwards...

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson living in the gutter.

thanks fellow fb.netters!
here's some more thoughts if i may. i wouldn't be surprised that in 10 years or so the model of the music industry will be drastically different and the music community will credit frank as one of the pioneers for positively changing the business model for music. kind of like how only now the pixies are getting widespread media praise for their musical contributions. comments like how the pixies were one of the most influential bands of the 90's. frank is paving the way for other quality musicians to make music that is commercially viable without big record companies. there are many others already doing this. and the internet is absolutely amazing because it provides so many more options and it takes power and control away from the big record companies. means more options for musicians and music lovers.
