Is this not the best FB song ever written. There is nothing he can do in the future that will ever top this masterpiece. Kidding, I do like the song, but wouldn't call it the best ever. I bet someone on here would call it the best ever, so who are you?

I try not to look at a songwriter's songs in the way you suggest, but I must admit that there are times when I find myself listening to this track, and am convinced that the fact that it's so unusual and seemingly obtuse elevates it to a higher level of purpose and craft than many tunes which might typically be thought of as Frank's "finest moments."
Perhaps it's because of it's lyrical inscrutability and the Roxy Music / "Low"-era Bowie-ness of the production and arrangement, but I find myself doing a lot of wondering about this track and the recording session that surrounded it.
For that reason alone, I would say it's one of my all-time favorites in his back catalogue. I hate the quick fade. I wish it went on for another five minutes, 'cause I'd like to know what might have come of it.

It really is a good whacky song to put on every now and again. I do find it very artsy and abstract. Why are we "collecting honey"

Great song! Frank Black has TOO many great b-sides. Oddballs is just as good as any official studio album.

Yeah, something about this song struck me, even though it's a little bit flimsy and throwaway. It sounds like Frank is doing a take-off of Andy Warhol, or something. Sometimes B-sides have a magical quality that the more obvious album songs don't....I actually probably prefare the original version of 'Men In Black', and I like oddballs and some other kind-of 'throwaway' numbers...'You Never Heard About Me' is pretty cool, for instance. |

I don't remember this song as sticking out, I may have to look into it again.

I'm with (most) of you on that one. Brilliant song. I love the lyrics and how he sings them. The line "The radio's playing And I laugh cause i said something funny" kills me every time.
But once again, what about Can I get a Witness (the real gem from the same EP) ?!?

You can download it from I-tunes. Although "Man of Steel" is mysteriously absent. I believe there are also a few web site type indie stores that have the album, although I don't have any of the links handy right now. Good luck, it's well worth it.

I enjoy the Oddballs version much more than the original - just because it's 45 seconds longer.
Btw, don't you think many of Frank's best songs (Brackish Boy, Two Spaces, Abstract Plain, Hostess With the Mostest, Billy Radcliffe, Coastline & the 4 Spinart exclusives, just to mention a few) are much too short?...

I've cried with this song. I've laughed, I've danced...
One of my most beautiful moments have been with this song.
With this one and also with "fazer eyes". I don't what they do to me, but they do it...

I don't know about that. I tend to think a song should be kept short unless there's a reason for it to be long. I don't know that there really is such a reason for these songs. They're great the way they are!

Sure these songs are great as they are - I just meant that a great 3-minute song is always better, or at least less frustrating, than a great 2-minute song. :)

Not if the extra minute is really bad and/or unnecessary.

Sorry if I'm not clear Monsieur Nathan, my English obviously is limited. I'm not saying a 3-minute song is necessarily better than a 2-minute song, I just mean a great 3-minute song is logically even more enjoyable than a great 2-minute song. :)

Great song, but I wouldn't dub it the best song ever written... that's a lot to proclaim.
Not to be picky, but to be picky? I make no sense, at least I am aware of it.

Amazing song indeed. If I were Frank, I'd re-record it in Nashville and put it on Honeycomb!

I'm cool cause the day is sunny
I laugh cause I said something funny
These lines are just awesome. Along with "I met a man/he was a good man", they sound so "Frank Black"... |
