Hello, as much as I loved the pixies, Frank still does it for me. |

have you been to any of the reunions gigs?
but i was always a pixies fan before i was a frank black fan, and i'd still class myself in such a manner. the pixies released 4.5 A+++ albums whereas while frank had released many more albums, the quality is not as consistently high.... i'd say 2A+++, 2A+ and some straglers.
however in saying that i am more excited about the new frank album than i am about a new pixies one.
that should get mel and bumble nice and riled up....hohoho.

Im not denying that I got in to FB via the Pixies. And I still LOVE the pixies (am listening to them right now).
I just feel theres alot in franks music that the pixies could never have achieved.
Just thought I'd throw that in there... |

i like FB better than pixies, but i too am simply in love with the man's art. pixies, then fb, then catholics- it's all amazing.
i think 'trompe le monde' is one of his greatest achievements.

Frank over the Pixies any time. I do think of them as Frank's first backing band, just part of the man's evolution. All of his solo stuff, and with the Catholics is unparalleled. Love that Frank. |

Wow, what a misleading thread title!
Anyway, I probably like Frank solo or with the Catholics a little bit better on average, although, if I were to rank all of Frank's songs, some Pixies stuff would probably be at the top. I prefer to see it as all one package, I guess. But yeah, I suppose I could say I'm more of a Frank fan than a Pixies fan. I got into Frank first as well, which is probably kind of unusual.

If this were a deserted island question, I would bring along more of his post Pixies albums. Having said that, however I'm very much looking forward to my 3 show, dead-head type trek across the midwest in November to see the Pixies. In my heart of hearts however, I'd be even more exited if he was playing solo, or with the Catholics.
Also, I can't wait for Honeycomb.

I'm all about the genius that is Charles Thompson v. 4.
While I look forward to seeing the Pixies later this fall, I live in fear that the Catholics won't get back together. Then I get my brain together and go on with my day. Can't let fear rule ya.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

I guess the best way to look at it is, its all CT, its all good, so well done people. If I had to choose, I'd say Pixies first, I spose they're my all time favourite band. Maybe FB solo second, Catholics third. That sounds ridiculous though, like they're low down the list. Its really not like that at all - they're amazing. They all are...

just to say... from the meetups i was actually on mel's side and getting outnumbered... my personal preference goes like this...
1. frank black 2. pixies 3. breeders
And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around. |

When listing my favorite bands, I always list Frank and the Pixies together, but I'd probably put Frank a little higher if I were forced to rank one over the other. I don't know enough by the Breeders to know where I'd rank them.

re:have you been to any of the reunions gigs?
no, but ive heard what's floating around in mp3 form and from the setlists ive read i am not impressed by a majority of the songs they are playing at shows...
i have had a few friends that have taken in some of the early shows on the west coast and while the best review i had was "neat" and all of them give props for taking the time to actually play well what they did play...the emotion/feel of the songs they did fell flat across the board from all my boys and they were totally unimpressed by the selection of songs they did (lot of the stuff off early recordings and of course the "standards"...we're more bossanova/trompe types)
i have no plans on seeing them, and that's before they even set foot on a reunion tour...seen them already...been there, done that...
please realize...i am NOT calling it crap...but i am far from impressed with a lot of setlists ive seen and my fellow musicians and friends, while they generally enjoyed the shows, arent telling me this is a "must see"
they did do one thing that deserves respect for a reunion show that a lot of reunion bands dont take seriously...practice what they are actually gonna play out. mad props for that.

I like Frank Black's solo work FAR more than the Pixies. Actually, come to think of it, I don't like the Pixies very much at all (with the exception of most of the Bossanova and Trompe songs). Well, I like them, but there are tons of bands I would rather listen to.

Sure you don't like the Pixies, Nimrod's Son. I understand Surfer Rosa, LevitateMe234, and WannaGrowUpToBeADebaser721 don't like the Pixies either.
Kidding. |

That his username is a Pixies song is totally a coincidence. Adrian really IS Nimrod's son.

I love FB in all his forms, but the Pixies changed my life.
The music and musicianship may be better, and the shows are great, but I don't think in 10 years anyone will be making a documentary about how FB+TC's made them want to start a band.
I you were coming of age in the late 80's and were into good music, the Pixies will always have a special place in the heart.
However, up till the recent reunion phenomena that I listen to way more FB+TC's records than Pixies, so maybe I am more of a fan of FB than Pixies. Hard to say. It's all pretty darn good music. |
