Seeing as people seem to tell day to day storys in here (about plungers!?) I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Story one.
I work at a little grocery type store in which we also do photo copying. This big jolly fellow cam in tonight, he was about 45 or somethin seemed happy joking with me and stuff. First I copied a letter for him, I dont like to look at what Im copying cos its not nice. Finished that and then he gave me a newspaper clipping, again I didnt turn it over until he said "thats my son" so I turn it round expecting something nice and....'Boy killed in car crash' the kid must have been about 18/19. Man! What the hell do you say to that. I kinda went red and said, oh. I felt so fucking bad.

Story two.
This happened just 2 or 3 days ago. I was discussing family with my new (now ex) girlfriend, when the subject of fathers came up, I asked what does he do? She said "He died when I was 12".....Um...

Its so hard, its just something you don't expect and you never know what to say. You know me I never like to have a thread where I don't pursue other peoples awkward stories (but then, who doesn't?) so the proverbial floor is open

My manager's secretary obsesses about her brother who committed suicide last year. I feel really bad for her, but she makes a point of talking about him a lot every day. I never know what to say.

That's pretty crazy. Every now and then I have a customer that mentions dead relatives and my brain automatically turns on the "awkward" switch. Like..."My deceased husband used to know all about the computer stuff." I kinda just don't really say anything and pretend I didn't hear it. What the hell do you say?

There is a girl at work now who tells me all the time about how she lost her fiance awhile back, (he died somehow) and how the guy she's dating now can't fill his shoes. It does make me feel really bad, because I feel like anything I say is going to come across as trite. I have never had anything as traumatic as that happen to me, so I feel like I can't really delve too deep conversationally into what she is saying, even though it seems like, by her bringing it up she is welcoming some kind of feedback.

This isn't near as serious as someone talking about a dead loved one, but has anyone ever had the experience of someone who is overweight making fat jokes? (I'm really not trying to be insensitive to overweight people here...) There used to be a girl I worked with who, while cool as all hell, was somewhat overweight. She used to make fat jokes about herself all the time. I would usually respond by saying something like, "What? You're not fat..." or the like, but I would think that she would hold that in just as high of contempt as if I'd agreed with her. It just made me feel really bad.

Girls seem to do that quite regular in my experience. I just don't say anything. Shut up or um hmmm seems to work fine.

when skinny girls tell me they look fat I just say something like "only in those pants". they are just fishing for compliments, I like to compliment on my own schedule thank you, i don't need to be prompted.

Or, you could say, "insecurity turns me off. Shut up."

(just kidding, I'd punch someone who said that)

At my work I had to help a lady
who had only a few months to live
get her finances in order.
That was beyond awkward.

Awkwardness is my middle name. I don't even need an uncomfortable subject, like the death of a loved one or anything. Pretty much "Hi, how's it going" will send me fumbling.

I'm usually very awkward. That's one reason why I tend to be afraid to talk to people.

About 5 years ago, when I was 18 and/or 19, I was just getting to know this group of people who all hung out (I worked with some of them). After hanging out with them for a few months, I went on vacation with my family for a week or two. When I got back, I went to the apartment this group of friends hung out at and chilled for a while. At one point, I was left alone in this room with this girl who I didn't know very well and was attracted to, or at least intrigued by, and in classic Peter (me) tradition, I had to go and say something weird. "So, what happened while I was gone, did anyone die?" The girl looked at me strangely, laughed oddly, and she said, "Yeah, my father did." She was serious. I felt awful. But she wasn't too upset. She found it rather amusing... somehow.

I lost my virginity to that same girl about a year and a half later. I haven't talked to her, or even seen her around, in a long time.

I know the feeling, foot in mouth disease...

It's bound to happen. That's weird a guy would bring a newspaper clipping of his dead son and photo copy it in public. I would never do that, I have my own.

That's just fucking wierd dude.

Anyway, yeah, when I accidentally provoke shit like that from other people, I do the Apl method. "(look down, ah man, I'm sorry."

No one gets mad about it.
It's therapy for them to talk about it,

Sensitivity and tre have nver been close friends

I started a new job recently and the peeps there are full on antisoacials, went into the smoke room and there was a group of men trying to be big I am's talking about pussy and blow jobs then looking over to see if I was getting indignant.

I waited patiently with my fag for around 10 mins then let rip with a torrent of pure filth with hand movements and everything then sat there grinning untill they left one by one by one

heh heh heh

I bet it probably effects you more than you think. Not just the fact that he's dead...but the fact that you didn't get to know him and he's dead..so you'll never get to have that. Whether you want sympathy or not, you're getting it, hahaha. I'm sorry your dad died without you getting to know him. So..there!

fuck you! it doesnt affect me! damn it. Apart fromt he fact that he never got to live to experience the fact that I rock, and didnt need him around to do that and want nothing to do with him. The fact that he took that choice away, thats what annoys me.

The only way it effects me is the older men thing, but i think id go for older men anyways. Boys are no fun. I need a man.

Just thought I'd throw that in there...
