Has anyone else checked this out?? It's on the FTP. This certainly is not a substitute for the finished work, but it is a curious artifact. Fans of FB's guitar work will be pleased to hear his tracks well up in the mix. Someone could tell me that this was the mix in FB's headphones while tracking, and I would believe them.
On the other hand, low end is non-existent and the vocals are almost not even there on some of the tracks, which does make it perfect for Pixies karaoke.
If you're working out the guitar parts, or just want to sing/scream along, it's worth a listen.....

If these are the same mixes I heard a while back, they are not actually alternate mixes in the true sense of the word.

They are merely the officially released album tracks that have had their phase inverted.

Inverting the phase tends to emphasize elements that were panned farther away from the center of the stereo image, while minimizing (and sometimes actually "vanishing") elements which are mixed fairly equally in both stereo channels, such as lead vocals (which are almost always panned near the center of most modern rock albums).

This was likely done by a fan with a decent computer program or home studio. However, the same approximate effect can be created by simply intentionally reversing the wiring of the speaker cables in your home stereo.

There are devices that do this automatically, which are marketed as "Vocal Eliminators" and are supposed to remove the lead vocals from most records so people can sing over them.

In reality they also get rid of any other instrumentation that's panned in the same general area, so the levels always sound a bit strange.

Thanks for that Pete!
It always bothered me to hear someone's stereo with the speakers hooked up backwards...sounds like the music is coming out of the back of your head. I've been known to make friends pull over and re-wire the speakers in their car just to not have to deal with it.
Funny though - not everyone can hear it.
