Okay... so it looks like "I, Robot" is coming to theatres on July 16th. And whereas I had been looking forward to this film, I am now almost completely convinced that it has been butchered beyond recognition from the Asimov book. I'm even seeing ads for Audi online that are tied in closely with the film... "See the Audi of the Future" or some such nonsense.
Even heard tale that the Rules of Robotics have been altered. Now that is just tantamount to blasphemy. *GRIN*
Anyone else have any thoughts about this film before seeing it (which I will anyway)?

Yanno... I wonder about stuff like that. If they're gonna just make up a whole new story, why don't the just give the movie a different name. Like possibly "Will Smith & The Robots" or something?

I, Robot. Asmov. Loved the short stories, but I think the only thing they got right was Susan Calvins's name.
They butchered the THREE LAWS. Sure you can argue the three laws to death and how it might be imposible to build a robot with a positronic brain that followed Asimov's 3 laws. That is why they call it Sci Fi after all, and if the are calling it Asimov's 3 laws then the robots must follow his three laws and not be a danger to humans. Anyone who has read The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun and The Robot of Dawn knows robots where always suspects but humans/spacers where the eventual bad guys.
As for the movie with Will Smith, unless there are humans in the robots they shouldn't call it I, ROBOT.

Haven't read the books, tho familiar with 'em...so the movie won't be ruined until after i see it then read the books. (Me so smart!)
Love the Farscape quote Opaque, i've been getting totally sucked into this series..fantastic! I think it might actually top Lexx as my fav. sci-fi series..

The newly filmed Farscape miniseries should be airing this fall. That's pretty exciting stuff. Can't wait to see it. Especially after the way the show was forced to end. It was the Mother of All Cliffhangers.

I saw a lengthy trailer the other day. Looked quite good. Not read the books. People always do this, Oh I read the books and they've changed it, the bastards! etc etc. Its a film, to begin with they will have to cut alot of it and things have to be changed for reasons Im sure someone could explain. I didn't see anyone complaining when they changed the complexion of the characters in titanic and these were real people!

I agree to a certain extent but when you to take something as important to the story as the three laws of robotics in I, Robot you're really changing a bit much even for creative license. Why not just write a whole new story or at least just say it was "inspired by Isaac Asimov's I, Robot"?

The three books I mentioned, The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun and The Robots of Dawn have nothing to do with the movie or the I, Robot novel. The only connection is the 3 laws of robotics and that Dr. Susan Calvin was a roboticist pioneer.
It's been awhile since I read the shorts stories of I, Robot but I don't remember a Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) or any major detective characters at all from those stories. On the other hand the above novels central character is a detective named Elijah Baley who is partnered with a robot named R. Daneel Olivaw. This is where the confusing might come from. When I first heard they where making a robot movie from Asimov's 3 laws and the main character is a detective. I thought for sure Will Smith was gonna play Baley or Olivaw. Jehosaphat!
I'll go into this movie like I went into Starship Troopers. I knew they had fucked with the story so why not just enjoy the effects.

This movie looks stupid. I have begun to think all Will Smith summer films are pretty much horrible and overrated. Also, it is coming out on my birthday. Lucky me!

THE 3 LAWS OF ROBOTICS:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Yes, some changing is necessary when going from written to film format. No way around it really. But in Sci Fi terms, changing the Rules of Robotics as stated by Asimov would be like oh say... suddenly N'Sync decides that they are gonna do a cover version of "Planet of Sound" but they decide to change the words to "Planet Of Gerber Daisies" and make a video for it starring themselves and Britney Spears singing along with a vocoder and they all talk about their humble origins and decide to sort of explore a "more countrified" back beat to give the song "more depth." Later, this song will be used in a Pepsi commercial, and at the very bottom of the screen you will see the words "Written by Frank Black."
That is just a mere fraction of how the new "I, Robot" seems. To me at any rate.

Yep, saw those pics, very cool...
The entire series is being posted in alt.binaries.multimedia, they're up to 1x11 or so... Eps 1-5 was posted about 20 days ago tho, so you'll need to find a provider with 30 day retention if you wanna download 'em all.. Nice 200mb DivX encodings.
It's especially nice since i've only really seen halfway through the 3rd season and on..

Pretty sure I've seen every episode at this point... especially thanks to those Chain Reaction shows on SciFi. Nothing like curling up on the couch for 24 hours straight with nothing but a whole lot of Farscape. Have the Season 2 DVD box set and have made it a prime goal to acquire the whole series in same format.  Maybe... one day...

Ah! Have you seen the episode called "DNA Mad Scientist" yet? It's the one with Namtar (interestingly enough, in Sumerian mythology the name Namtar is given to a particular demon that personified death, a messenger of the underworld goddess Ereshkigal). One of the highlights of Season 1 to be sure. Farscape's Namtar really had a flair for experimentation.
In Season 2, be on the lookout for "Crackers Don't Matter." Frelling hilarious. If you haven't seen it already of course. :D

Will Smith’s Three Laws of Robotics (as opposed to Asimov’s)
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm… unless it goes along with some cool consparicy plot that has a moronic twist at the end.
2) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings unless it causes a character to miss a one-liner, or conflicts with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect it’s existence unless it would be useful to Will Smith or secondary characters as a cool tool in a strange martial arts move, or conflicts with the First or Second Law.
