I just recently started listening to this a lot. I'm in love with it. I think he may turn out to be the next Frank Black. I mean, hell, he wrote a song about a David Lynch movie. He also spent over 400 hours working on this album which is insane...I'm seeing him with Pedro the Lion on the 26th and can't wait! He's got some pretty deep lyrics. He has good taste in movies, too. The album's name is a Donnie Darko reference and he has another song about Requiem for a Dream. Does anyone else have this album? Care to share your thoughts of it?

Here are the lyrics for the song about Mulholland Drive:

"Promising Actress" - John Vanderslice

in the seconds between the safety unlocks and the shot,
the story is clear of distortions and tears and you’ll know why

we’re on mulholland drive
can you survive a look inside?

like a bomb in reverse, fragments of truth return:
the money’s been paid out, the key’s on the table
you’ve killed someone you used to love

yes I agree now, her story’s a hoax
recorded impulses laid, dubbed and cross faded,
it’s just light replayed

still I ended on mulholland drive
can you survive a look inside?

yes I can see now, they had nothing to do with a role refused
and sometimes a cowboy’s just a man in a cowboy suit

I'm a big JV fan. This album is terrific, as is his previous effort, Life and Death of An American Fourtracker. There's so much going on in his songs musically, yet it never feels muddy or overwhelming. I love White Plains, Pale Horse, My Family Tree.... heck, I love the whole thing. Do you have any of his other records, Crouton? Life and Death is amazing.

I've got all of his albums. Life and Death of an American Fourtracker, Time Travel is Lonely, Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, etc etc. The only one I don't have yet is "MGM Endings" (Cellar Door remixes.)

I think he's the next truly great songwriter. He really is terrific. Are you gonna see him while he's on tour? (like right now, haha..)

Ah, and the standouts in this album for me are Heated Pool and Bar and Coming and Going on Easy Terms. (Yep, the Heated Pool and Bar song is a Neil Young reference. So cool.)

just saw john live with pedro last friday, i was somewhat familiar with him even though i don't own any of his cd's,just some free downloads. thought he sounded even better live. i really appreciated the fact that he pronounciated his lyrics so clearly.halfway through pedro's set he came out and sang duet with him for one song, he really seemed to be enjoying himself, really seemed like a pleasant guy. sorry i can't provide a set list.

Yeah, he's really nice. I've exchanged some e-mails with him. He's also a huge Pixies and Frank Black fan!

Does "Cellar Door" have any reference to "Donny Darko"?

well obviously they talk about the phrase 'cellar door' in DD, and it leads him to his fate blah blah. and mullholland drive dissettles me way too much. especially her shrivelled up head! eww!

they got the keys to the city but we got a lotta shakin in our hips!
