disclaimer: this was written by me a few minutes ago while listening to some fave albums, I am not in the most objective of minds so take this for whatever it's worth, if this stinks I might delete it later on, thanks.
The creative ‘canary in the coalmine’ died for me with examples like Radiohead’s latest foray into music. In the silence that follows, with no one left to follow in their footsteps, I am troubled and focused on not dwelling too long on the implications, else developing a compounded feeling of panic.
The biggest disappointment of truly great albums like the Pixies made and one’s like Radiohead’s OK Computer (even TMBG's Flood), seems to be that of a legacy highlighting a phenomenon conspicuous by its absence in our current years. There is currently a silence that emanates like a void in the wake of such acts of these creations.
These albums seem to have been written in a language stemming from the energy of the late 80’s and 90’s. It was created in the traditional, naively, fantastic, mature version state of ‘what if?’ By the late 90’s, the sociological global subconscious still floated about unsettled like particles of chalk dust destined for some inferior future existence on the classroom floor, what was being defined by the chalk still remained obscure. Some last gasps by Gen-X were exhaled like Fight Club, American Beauty and the Matrix as cinematic examples.
In the consequently sober years of mass consumptive global ambitions to follow, the sunlight through the classroom windows filtered through the heavily chalk laden air and illuminated a harsh destiny written by the owners of the classroom, schools and the factories that manufactured all chalk, everywhere.
These symbolic particles of chalk absorbed most of the malleable moisture of the ‘what if?’ language, ultimately hardening into the cement that has bound most of the possibilities of the future, creative and otherwise. The harshest legacy of these albums (acts of creation) is that quite possibly, such quality is no longer deserved by a world like ours, in the cold light of our present days.
Some of the good will that had been taken for granted in the past, with good reason at the time, appears no longer justifiable.
At what point do past and current ‘acts of creation’ (from all fields, not just music) fail to provide us with the progressive leaps at some minimum rate, if at all anymore that we have become accustomed. Perhaps this lack or failure in mass cultural progress is in itself a message. It may be that all that is left for us to do is to take direct action against a force set upon confusing and dimming out all lights deemed unnecessary, whose energy will be used towards total global conquest at all costs.
It is conceivable to accept the proposition that the suffocation of creativity has always been inevitable, unavoidable as the setting of the sun, for our time in history. It is my belief in such things that make me for the first time, at 28, to have feelings of getting old.

Depressed? I use to feel that way, but sometimes (I mean, maybe, three or four times in a year) you discover a surprising thing that helps you to keep your hopes up. But I understand you, we're all surrounded of(by?) rubish.

There are TONS of bands who are doing amazing things, but the record industry just isn't that interested anymore. Don't give up! Just check out as many unsigned bands as possible, enjoy their awesome music and support them!

True. The trees don't let us see the forest... or whatever.

I just woke up from this strange dream I had and somehow I feel it's related to the first post I made. I hope it's mildly entertaining at least. For some background to me lately, I've been listening/playing a lot of music, reading books on Einstein and visited a local buddhist temple yesterday.
DREAM where I am reciting the lyrics of a song to a person on a bus. After I am done, this person step to the driver's seat and begins driving the bus.
As I have absolutely no control over this, I resolve myself to simply enjoying the ride. The bus driver starts racing through the streets of a busy downtown city core.
A passenger next to me starts questioning our destination and asks me something like, "Are we not headed where we're supposed to be?"
I calmly respond, "It's possible."
The passenger starts screaming that they want to get off the bus immediately.
Meanwhile, the bus has pulled us into a bus terminal and is accelerating, full speed, into a cement wall.
As the bus collides with the wall, time slows everything down to near motionlessness. I suppose this would be the non-hollywood version of extreme 'bullet-time'. As the front of the bus slowly begins crumpling upon impact, the windshield breaks. Being in the frontmost passenger seat, I have time to consider my current situation.
First of all, I imagine that this is probably similar to what an astronaut feels like in space. With all of our momentum suddenly reduced to zero velocity, I am feeling weightless and with an alarmingly lack of choice over my direction.
I consider my chances of survival and believe them to be nearly non-existent considering that I will be among the first against the wall. There also remains behind me a mass of bus-metal waiting to say, "Hi," to me up front. I think that I'd rather be dead than survive in whatever painful horrible near-vegetable state that I would emerge in.
What becomes clear to me after sometime is that time on this bus is moving forward so incredibly slowly that according to the pace at which I would inevitably become a pulpy red smear, it would take exactly as many years left in my real conscious life.
Now that I'm awake, it feels as though my subconscious continues to exist in that chaotic, ill-fated, determined state.
As a result, writing this here in real life, time feels for me to be running backwards as in a countdown.
I guess I shouldn't eat so much spicy food before going to sleep.
You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more? |

good question. the thing is, in the dream I was stuck in realtime physics, so I was stuck in my course floating forward off my seat towards the wall and there didn't seem to be anything to do about it.

that sucks. your dream reminds me of a great short story by American writer Ambrose Bierce "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge". it's about this guy who's about to be hung, and in the time between being pushed off the bridge and falling to the end of the noose, he recalls his life story. it's chilling. |
