From an interview with Kim before the release of Tromple le Monde (http://www.playlouder.com/feature/+pixies4/):

"Are there any Pixies tracks recorded that have not been released?

Yes, yes. Definitely.

Can you tell me about them?

No. Because we're trying to work those out, because we're doing another album straight away. that'll be more surfier, like "Bossanova". We've got a lot of recorded material, like Guns 'n' Roses. Not enough to make this album and not enough to make that album. We've done sort of seven eighths of this album and two eighths of that album... see what I mean? We've done more than an album's worth of stuff, but not enough for either of them to come out. It's weird, isn't it?"

I suppose this could have just been an early plan, and they all ended up on TLM, but I'd never heard that before.

Wait, are you saying that Johnny Malta's tape of the Trompe alternate mixes is destroyed?!? And like, everybody knows this?

I guess it doesn't make any difference, it wouldn't get heard either way.

But, has J. Malta ever reared his head around here? All I remember is how he used to fuck with the AbstractPlain list.

Okay, something I've never completely understood is, who exactly is Johnny Malta and what exactly does he have? Could someone please explain this in detail or give me a link that does?

we should make t-shirts that say "Death to Johnny Malta" for people to wear at Pixies gigs.

I've heard that Hang On To Your Ego too. 4-5 years ago. Back in the days of the old Napster. Real raw sounding and no keyboards if I remember correctly. I remember thinking it was going to be more of thrill to hear it than it actually turned out to be.

Crap! I'm sorry; what I remembered as "Brackish Boy" (for whatever stupid reason) turned out to be "Boom Chick-a-Boom"...

Well it seems pretty obvious that J Malta is The Swimmer.
Brackish Boy, Pixies version? Man, I'd kill to hear that one!

That's an old Rock A My Soul interview. There is also an interview with Black in Sounds (i think) where he mentions that they are recording another album, and he mentions an epic surf song...

But, isn't the hang on to your ego version just Black with his guitar + a drum machine and and a 4-track? The one that was used on a peel session? And probably a demo for his original solo project, which was to do an album full of cover songs?

I definitely read something about unreleased TLM session tracks a few years ago. With the success of the reunion, surely 4AD could see about releasing this stuff?
There's a purple tape 2? Wow!

There is, in fact, a full band version of Brackish Boy on the Malta mixes.

I have only heard part of it. If I had access to the whole thing, you know exactly where you'd be able to find it. :)

well we all know where it is (or was)....

i wouldn't have thought that he could have been the only person with a copy of said mixes except that the WERS radio shows only appear to have existed on 1 cassette tape....but now i'm not so sure...

I think I have heard pretty much every nirvana song, released and unreleased, that has ever been recorded. But Nirvana isn't my favorite band anymore. The Pixies are. But I haven't even heard every single album all the way through yet. I think that's because I'm still being blown away by surfer, doolittle, and TLM. It's so hard to get a hold of good bootlegs anyway, unless you know someone who's really into trading and selling em.

Catch ya later, Bill and Ted!

but bhopalstiff, most of the fun is slowly hearing new songs and new recordings...i find tghat if you get a whole bunch of new stuff in one go, it lessens the power and the enjpyment of them as individual pieces of history etc....

i'm all for dripfeeding.
