June 8 - Venus, goddess of beauty and love, will dance across the sun.

Will you be watching?
http://www.transitofvenus.org/

Anybody plan to record the event?
We don't have the special equipment needed, so I think we'll use the binoculars against cardboard "trick", and maybe get some video or photography that way. I haven't been this excited to get up at 5 AM in a long time.

I'm your Venus!
I'm your fire, joy, desire!

I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore.

when can I see this apl4? I live in Vancouver, BC., Will I get retinal damage if I stare directly at it? I like celestial activity.

Is this the same venus as in Adnan's 'I love you' all, that will go dancing across the sun?

OK. I won't give up just yet then. It seems that I haven't quite figured out the alchemy of the successful topic. High voltage through eye of newt and bits of alumin(i)um foil doesn't seem to work...onward and upward!

This is the very same Venus, Cheeseman. Only this one hasn't happened in122 years! If you miss this one, the next is on June 6, 2012.

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/transit/venus0412.html
where you can see it:
"The global visibility of the 2004 transit is illustrated with the world map in figure 2 ( Low Res or High Res ). The entire transit (all four contacts) is visible from Europe, Africa (except western parts), Middle East, and most of Asia (except eastern parts). The Sun sets while the transit is still in progress from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Korea, easternmost China and Southeast Asia. Similarly, the Sun rises with the transit already in progress for observers in western Africa, eastern North America, the Caribbean and most of South America. None of the transit will be visible from southern Chile or Argentina, western North America, Hawaii or New Zealand. "

It takes photon power
And eight minutes of an hour
To make it to our sun
And I know it sounds weird
But it's 8 more years
To make the next one

I react indifferently. If I do not get to see that which no human has ever witnessed, will my life really be any worse? That is the question I deploy after experiencing any sadness or compunction for missing a something.

I am sorry if I spoiled your topic. I just couldn't find anything smart to say, so I said something stupid. Don't be upset. Please.

Well.........

..........
....ok.

Seriously, I just wanted to see if anyone else was gonna watch the Venus Transit! It should be really cool (It's this Tuesday, June 8th).

So, lessee...hmmm.......must employ Adnan's "4 Rules and a P.S. to a Noteworthy Topic" topic fixer!

What's your favorite part of the universe lately? (It could be anything, and it'll still fit the thread title!)

Me? Right now, I'm diggin' on baby groundhogs in my backyard (also known as whistlepigs or woodchucks), entanglement, and spicy Chicken Pad Thai. Yuuummmm!

PS. Yus! Capitals and 3 exclamation points!!!

Who's LM Margo and what is special about her Peri-Peri?!!!

Do you get to see the stars very well where you live?

P.S. Thank you for noticing, dear Cheeseman!!!

I dunno, its the name of some Peri-peri sauce I bought when I was in South Africa. The night sky was beautiful - I've never seen the Milky Way before, living in London I see pretty much zip. Beautiful. And very big.

PS. You're welcome, sweetest apl!!!

In Paris, no stars either. Except local movie stars, if you're lucky. The most beatiful sky I've ever seen was in the north of Sweden (200 km north of the Polar Circle), and it was just amazing. Especially with all the Northern Lights constantly dancing through the sky...

Just one picture, but not very clear. You need spacial cameras for that (longer exposition). Wait, I will post it.

Here :

It's a very bad picture, we had the feeling that it was very near us, like 200 m (i don't know how many yards this represents) higher. And we have walked for three hours by - 45°C (i don't know how many fahreneits this represents) to see it, but it was worth it. Like seeing the face of God - and I have deerly paid (frozen nose for the next two months).

Wow! Nice image! What in the world are those dark squiggly things? One looks like an upside-down bunny-UFO.

I had a groundhog living in my backyard and my neighbors called the Animal Cops and they came and took it away. Assholes they are.

All the info on where to see and how to view (not directly! -you can get a vision, from looking into the sun...) this very rare and cool event:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/venus_transit_2004.html

More in-depth info:
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/venus_transit_040206.html

you can watch it online too (sites listed at bottom of the article):

And I know it sounds weird
But it'll take you four years
To make the next one

Expanding border
That's the sauce
Of chaos
And that's an order
That's an order

So stomp your feet
And clap your hands
Get out of your seat
And do a little dance
Lift up your voice
And sing with glee
Now listen carefully to me

Desert your quarters
Behold the pie in the sky
And that's an order
That's an order

That's an order (x7)
