My family's house was hit by a tornado last night -as was most of Kentucky- everyone is ok, but one 200+ yr old tree went through their house, hundreds of trees in their yard and their neighborhood were lost, and one house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground because the firemen couldn't reach it for all the downed trees. We had near misses here in Delaware County in Columbus, OH - the entire state was red with tornado watches and warnings until 4 this morning.
I wonder if anyone else on this forum had any problems last night. There have been over 200 tornados -some estimates are over 320- in the past 3 days. Are you ok, CroutonFuton? Anyone else here that was in the line of foul weather? Hope you're all alright!
edit: oh! I thought of you LBF and glacial last night -there were tornados in Tennessee and West Virgina as well -hope you're ok!

I'm sorry to hear that alps. I can't ev en imagine what that must be like. I'm glad you are okay. How long is this nightmare expected to go on? Is this something that can continue all summer?

Hey thank you KoK -I'm just fine, it was my Mom's family's house in Kentucky (and they are all ok), so I just heard about it from them a couple hours ago. I think the weather is on the peak of its cycle -it seems like a 30 year cycle. The last huge string of tornados that hit (in KY) was when I was 1, in '74, and I remember it well.
Ohio just plain sucks. We get hailstorms on a regular basis, and dangerous thunderstorms most days of the week in the summer, and we get nasty thunderstorms and heavy winds in winter(!!), spring and fall. In the summer here, there is a tornado watch or warning at least once a week. Getting pretty good at packing an emergency kit and staring at the basement door.
I don't know why I thought someone would answer this thread if they got hit last night. I guess I just didn't get too much sleep. ...yeah, that's the ticket!
Anybody have any tornado or other nasty weather stories?

We had some big ass hail this week, which I hadn't seen in years. I didn't know about the tornadoes yesterday, that sucks. And I live in Virginia not west, anyway, I hope your mockingbird is all right... |

It's approaching 75 degrees out here so I opened the windows. I might have to go outside and work on my tan in a little bit. I'll bring some water in case I start to feel thirsty. Sorry. That's the best I can do.

Oops -couldn't remember which it was, sorry LBF. I think my mockingbird is alright. ;) I believe I will go outside this evening and get him on our minidisc recorder, if it isn't tornado-ing and hailing that is.
Doesn't it seem like hail is a lot more common these days? It used to be such a rarity, like maybe once in several years, but now it's just about every time we have a thunderstorm. What the hell?

Sorry to hear about that Jen, but glad everyone's OK. It's tornado season here too, I think, but not a whisper of them yet. Good luck!

Some trees went down and the electricity went out for a bit, but other than that I'm alright.

Glad to hear you're alright Crouty. :)
Yeah, I sometimes forget how wide (or long?) the tornado belt really is, Dean. Colorado to the East Coast, Texas North all the way to Canada -wow. I think this year's gonna be a doozy. Knock on wood, all will be ok. fnord.

I think you guys get it far worse than we do up here. Generally one tornado touch down per year and the rest are funnel clouds and twisters that don't do much... I think we have global warming to blame for increased activity as tornados are a result of temperature differences in two air masses meeting.
Glad you're OK too, Crouton.
