Yeah, it's hard to hear about this stuff and not have the gratification satisfied immediately!
So I checked in with my chef friend. He said that a couple of years ago, when he was teaching at a culinary institute in New England, at the end of classes a student gave him as a present all of the Pixies' commercially released works. Then the guy identified himself as Frank's step-brother. My friend cannot remember his former student's name but said he didn't think it was Errol. What he does remember is that the guy was really nice and not boastful about his brother, just wanting to share the music -- which got my friend hoooked. He's into the Catholics now, too.
I realize that this is nowhere near as thrilling as Chicken's train ride and all the news that came from it, but I thought I'd pass it along.

I was with a contact of the management a night or two ago, and he explained that 8 songs had been recorded, with a release imminent.
The reply was prompted by my enquiry why no new material had emerged yet on the tour.
There may also be a song available for download only, with proceeds to a charity.
Bottom line is that new material is soon to be available, but being kept off tour to avoid bootleg screwing the release. |

I like Loganz' plan. Bring us Honeycomb, a tour, a new Catholics album, and then the new Pixies in 2006. :) This is a great time to be alive. |

I bet that this is one of the best first posts on the forum
I love it, somebody with a weird name who hasn't stole the hearts of the forum members who we don't instantly trust comes up with lot's of info
and we are still here groups divided in believers and non-believers
ohh JCarr73729 when do you come back?

I'm off to see the Pixies in London tonight, Thursday, so looking forward to it.
I can't say much more about my source of the imminent 8 track release and the download, but it's kosher. The download method is still unclear when I asked, but I was told the charity's name.
The band was commited to releasing new material this year, but where was it? That was why I asked my source, and he was forthcoming with some information. The recordings exist, the band wants to make a download available to benefit a charity, but with the schedule they have over this Spring and Summer it's finding the time and moment to release the new material. I guess that's where the management play their part?
Another piece of info. The band get 1-to-15 of all the DiscLive recordings, plus 16-to-30 are available to management/etc. to purchase. Not sure if the band have to pay for the first fifteen, but 16-to-30 must be purchased. DiscLive economics!

I can't be the only one who'd be thrilled to purchase all 30 (or more), can I?

I was told that the band has special promo copies, which are unnumbered...

I would be over the moon if there was any new Pixies material in the works. However, despite the fear-of-bootlegs theory, I find it hard to believe they'd play their first world tour in over a decade and not even showcase one new song. It would be a great opportunity to drum up some interest, before officially announcing a new album.
Although, maybe I'm not thinking hard enough about the business plan. Perhaps the idea is to do the reunion tour (all old material) and make some serious cash. Then, after the tour has finished and interest died down a bit, they announce a new album. Bang! They're all over the press again. We've had the "First Pixies Tour in a Decade" headlines. Next comes "First New Pixies Material in a Decade". Then they announce a tour to support the new album. There are plenty of people who couldn't get hold of tickets to this tour, and I'm sure they'll want to go to the album tour. Also, big fans who already went to this tour will have a good reason to go to the next one as well.
I really don't have a problem with the whole "cash-in" thing. If I get to see them play live, or hear new tracks then I'm happy.
And that's pretty clever marketing! |

I don't have a problem with Charles "cashing in" on his earlier musical genius. I figure that the more money he makes, the more money he can spend on new equipment, more tours, fat salaries for the Catholics. I bet it's fun for a musician to get fun toys to record with. It's the guy's overdue due.
And we get to see our Pixies live.
It's win-win.

Thanks JCCarr! I felt from the get-go there'd be new stuff. With Frank being as prolific as he is, it seemed like a given (the cat writes more music than Steve Allen did). I can't wait to hear the new songs and I do not fear them sucking. By the the spring of 1992 when "I Can't Forget" came out on that Leonard Cohen tribute record they sounded a million miles away from Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa but still sounded very much like the band we all knew and loved. The new recordings will be just fine. |

OK, Wooddude, let's discuss this. Would you be into that? Would a "Kim song" be a good thing? I don't care either way. What do others say?

Sorry to be a skeptic but i really can't believe that new material is allready recorded.. I mean they only started playing together what like 8 months ago? perhaps longer in secret which wouldnt surprise me..but to have actually written new songs, rehersed the hell out of them and recorded them allready seems a bit far fetched even for me.. but who knows we'l c i guess. I think frank's honeycomb is gona be the best work we've seen from him since the Pixies days of glory, im really looking forward for that one..whens that coming out? |

Couple thoughts for digestion:
1) I spoke with David Lovering for about 5 minutes prior to the Vancouver shows and he said they had no new material and no plans to record any.
2) I got the disclive #27/28, so I guess if that info about 16-30 being available to mgt. is true, then they didn't want 'em!

I saw 0017 from Vancouver 2nd night handed over from management to a friend. Less not wanting them, more keeping one for themselves and being generous with others.
I guess David Lovering is closer to events than my source, but he knows them well and was quite serious about the new material.
I will speculate no further and let events unfold.
Regards, John. |

I saw the bloke that you are referring to at Brixton. He was off to the side of the stage with a tannish jacket on. Looked like Charles, but with grey hair combed straight back.
I didn't get a chance to say hi as it would have required bull rushing the stage and making it past all the people squashed in front.....
I am not sure what to think about a new record really, but judging from the performance that I just saw at Brixton, I would say sounds good to me....
Mr Black hasn't lost his penchant for screaming I am happy to say.... |
