Not trying to start a fight with the anti-Phair contingent but thought I'd share what I just posted at a Phair fansite:

First time seeing Liz and must say it was truly great fun. So glad they managed to put together what I take to be a somewhat isolated, non-tour show. Liz seemed genuinely delighted to be at Lake Tahoe, saying she loved the scenery on the drive up from Reno, presumably having landed there a few hours before, and otherwise commenting on how happy she was to be there. I’m told it was her first show at the lake but it sounded like she might be back. Then again, maybe she glows about wherever she is. Anyway, it was great to see her enjoying herself.

No opening act, table and booth seating, good casino acoustics and production. Liz had technical problems with one guitar intermittantly but took it all with professional, and touching, good will. Great show-woman! Opened with Rock Me, followed by Polyester Bride. Liz wore a beighish tank top and denim miniskirt, looking hot per usual. Don’t have a setlist but they also played Uncle Alvarez, Chopsticks, 6’1”, Fuck and Run, Divorce Song, Stratford-On-Guy, Extraordinary, Why Can’t I?, Love/Hate, My Bionic Eyes, and many others that perhaps someone else can list. Liz was in good voice. Lot’s of light banter throughout. Decent crowd of a few hundred though nowhere near filling the venue. I was seated with three moms who really seemed to identify with much of Liz’s sexual and inter-relational imagery. Would love to see photos and hear a recording of this show. I think it would be better than most of the recent bootlegs I’ve heard. She should release a live disc from the recent shows.

Was pleased to see Liz featured on the cover of the current Tahoe casino promo tabloid, with two pages of photos and story within. Such a sweetie. Couldn’t be more happy that I got to see her. First time I’ve seen someone I both respect and love so much as both artist and woman. So strong and vulnerable at the same time. The whole thing was such a treat that it has my hungover self feeling all warm and fuzzy. Damn, I love her!

I loved the earlier three records, but after I heard three or four songs from the new one I couldn't stand to continue. How many songs were from the older ones and how many new? Did the show sound more like the old style or the new?

When I saw her last summer she played a LOT of old songs, and probably four or five from the new CD. I think she knows that is what many people want to hear, but she really seems to enjoy the new songs.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed seeing her, Erebus! I have seen her three or four times now, and I always have fun.

The recent album surprised me too. Of course I love the earlier stuff. I think since the show I've listened to almost all of my Liz discs, with fresh appreciation. re the new disc, I initially burned a cdr from the non-Matrix album tracks and the comeandgetit internet ep. That ep follows the core Liz trajectory, in my opinion. But as I listened I caught onto the Matrix stuff.

In regard to the show, I would say it was roughly a third new. As to the sound, it varied considerably, to good effect. Stratford-On-Guy was just her, acoustic guitar, & stool, and for Chopsticks she trekked "up" to the keyboards. Almost half of the show was cast in the newer mod-rockin' sound but I must say it rang true. Why Can't I? was wonderful. Frankly, going in I had been concerned about her rep for stagefright, having heard bootlegs that could confirm, but I must say there was no hint of that. Beyond command of voice, presence, intent, ... she staged a riveting show. Left me feeling good, and it seemed Liz enjoyed herself. Then cigarette.
