Typically - between 80 and 90 mph on a motorway (unless it's raining or foggy). Always stick pretty much to speed limits in towns and villages.
Exceptionally - I once blipped the car up to 125 for a very short distance but felt very very uncomfortable.
As a passenger - about 160 in a Lotus Esprit Turbo. Didn't really enjoy it. I had visions of us hitting something and vapourising.
Lucky escape - got flashed by a traffic cop in Idaho whilst doing 85 mph. We pulled in and he zoomed past and booked the guy in front of me who I had been tailing for the last 30 miles or so. How we laughed.....all the way to Boise.

well in NZ we don't really have motorways, and many of the roads are a bit dangerous to be driving at high speeds, but makes for awesome rally driving!
highest speeds: Me driving - 180 kph in my brothers 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfa Sud Sprint Veloce... was ridiculously silly cause it was pitch black and the headlights hardly worked, and it was on a country road i had never driven on before. but i was late for a gig.
Lucky Escape - driving with my brohter in his Alfa Romeo 164, getting caught in some roadowrks on the way to a movie. as soon as we got clear my brother floored it getting up to 180kph in about 10 seconds in a 100kph zone when we see a police motorbike coming in from a side road. my brother slams on the brakes, and gets pulled over. My brother is shitting his pants cause if you're 50kph over, you automatically lose your licence.....Luckily the cops had been sitting just after the roadworks and only clocked him at 147kph. we made the movie, if a little late.
Madness - getting to 100kph on my old KX125 motocross bike...... getting to 80kph on out 4-wheeled farm bike...was shaking like a motherbitch getting to 70kph on my shitty litle mountain bike with my dad struggling to keep up on our farm motorbike on the hill below our farm.
ah, the joys.
Funnest drive - had just completed a 5 day tramp where we had to leave my car at one end and hire a car to drive back and pick it up. upon getting back to my car we see it had been broken into...i was incredibly mad - all they got was 1 shoe and an old pair of thermal pants for fucks sake. anyways, the other car (mine was the '82 alfa still) was a brand new mitsubishi lancer and we decided to have a we race back to where the others in our party were....it was about 350km of almost entirely mountainous terrain and it took us just over 2.5 hours. the number of times i was certain i was about to fly of a cliff......it was fabulous fun. i soon forgot about my broken window. oh, i forgot to mention, the 2.5 hours included abou 30minutes reporting the theft from my car to the cops....ah the irony.

Used to drive fast.
Having kids makes you appreciate speed limits. They are set for reasons of safety.

Hey, I just asked this question in the "Our lovely Selves" topic. Copier!
On highways the fastest I'll drive is 15 over the speed limit. On average I'll go about 68-70 in a 60 zone. In residential areas when it's 35, I go no faster than 45 ever.
I think the fastest I've ever gone over was about 88 MPH in a 60 MPH. It was only for a few seconds and it was 2 in the morning. I just wanted to see if I'd go back in time.

I've had enough tickets, from now on I only go five mph over the speed limit and that's it.

I think the fastest I've ever gone is somewhere around 75 MPH. I tend to speed a little on highways, but I usually don't go very far over the speed limit. I've only been driving for less than two years, by the way. Maybe it has something to do with my not driving at all until I was 24.

On the Interstate (65 mph posted) I usually set the cruise at around 74-78 range. A lot of the Interstates were built with an 80 mph speed limit in mind. I try to drive whatever the rest of traffic is driving. You know, kind of blend in.

The Conservative party have one policy, and one only, that I agree with: they'd set the speed limit to 80mph, because its more often broken than not, which I agree with. On a motorway, I have done over 90mph, but the car makes some really funny noises, so its very rare. Usually about 80.
In a residential, i.e. 30mph area, I'd usually go at the limit, although if its a wide, straight, 'main' road, maybe 40.

America needs more 70 MPH highways. And we also need separate highways just for crappy drivers and elderly people that don't know what they are doing (some older people still have driving skills). Those highways can be all 55 MPH.

What are the speed limits on the east coast states these days? Do any have 65 or 70 yet? Of course with those toll booths every 5 miles it wouldn't really matter anyway... |

I generally don't go any faster than 90 cos my car shakes like a fucker but seeing as I recently got a better car which upped the engine ante Im always tempted to get past a 100 which I did once. Felt like it was going to fall to pieces.
With someone else 125mph but it was in a mondeo and it was still really smooth.

There are places on the East coast that are 65 for sure. There are stretches of 70 around my area. But it pisses me off because when I'm driving up north on I-81, it's mostly 70 until Virginia. What the hell, Virginia? Do you not have 70 MPH zones?

my greatest driving feat occured when some friends and I drove from Cincinnati to Naples, Florida, in just over 14 hours.
To give some context the trip, according to the trip tick we had, estimated the time at 21 hours.
average speed of about 100, only two stops |

A question for you North Americans.
When myself and my wife had our long holiday in the US in 1991 (about 10 weeks or so) we did a fair bit of driving on freeways. In places like Idaho, Arizona it seemed like there were hardly any other vehicles on the road. A total contrast to British roads.
I found it physically inpossible to drive at the speed limit!! Particularly in 55 mph areas on big wide open roads. We did one long return trip from Yellowstone to Boise and back again in a big 3.3 litre Buick. I took the car up to it's speed limited 85 mph (speed limited!?) and left it there for the whole journey. I was quite intrigued by the number of cars that flashed their lights as we went past them as if we were causing them some kind of inconvenience. Is this common? I felt like putting a sign in the back window saying 'EUROPEAN' as a kind of excuse.
On the flip side what do Americans do when they come over here? Do they go with the flow and drive at 80-90 mph?

Barney, you're right in that American speed limits seem made to be broken. I'll find myself going 10 or 15 miles/hour faster than the speed limit without realizing it. Keeping my car at or under the speed limit makes me feel like the car's broken. This is especially true on the in-state highways where the speed limit is around 40-50 miles/hour. They're not quite residential, not quite highway. I am a reformed speed demon; I was very close to having my license taken for accumulated violations. Now I keep it 10 miles over the limit, which is a lot slower than the police drive! What's interesting is that I was stopped for speed about 30 times before I got my first ticket and never even got a written warning. Once I got my first ticket, I've gotten one every time I've been stopped for speed. Remember, speed doesn't kill people-aggressive assholes who need to be in front of YOU (so that they can go slower than you were going) are the real problem. Drive fast, not aggressive. This has been a public service announcement.

Barney, the light-flashing, in most areas I've been it's usually a courtesy warning of a speed trap ahead, or at least that a cruiser has been spotted, but your mileage may vary.

Yeah, what apl4eris said... unless those people out west were trying to be "good citizens" and get you to slow down because you were being dangerous. I think in Virginia going 15 MPH over the speed limit is considered reckless driving.
I've never been pulled over (knock on wood) and I always here people in NC saying "Man I got pulled over for going 10 MPH over the speed limit." I always go 10 over, so I just assume people are lying and they were actually going 15 over.

I think you're pretty safe doing 80/85 on a motorway here. I can't believe its physically possible to stick to 55mph limit on an empty road, I don't think your pedal foot would accept it.

Benji, you don't have animals walking around the countryside at night? Can you imagine hitting something sheeplike at 180kph!
I only go fast in case of work related emergencies, if going 140kph on the freeway can be called going fast. I was once pulled over by a cop for going too fast at 3am in the morning. I told him I was on my way out for an emergency at work. I lied, I was on my way back to bed after work.

Ok, so I'll make sure I stick to only 15 over when I drive through Virginia.
I guess 20 over is kind of asking for it, but considering it reckless driving is lame. Going 20 over means you are probably going 5-10 miles per hour more than what everyone else on the highway is doing. Now if everyone actually went the speed limit, going 20 over would be dangerous.

In my part of VA (Southeast / Newport News) speeding fines can fuggin' clear out your bank account.

Failure to give proper signal is also considered reckless driving.
(So, why the heck don't cops use their turn-signals?)

Virginia seems like it's anal about speeding. They even have those signs "Speed limit Enforced by Aircraft" or whatever it is. And radar detectors are illegal as well.

Aren't there some states that have highways with no speed limit? I'm thinking maybe Montana or thereabouts.

I'm pretty sure Montana has one. I remember hearing that somewhere. And... maybe North Dakota because no one lives there.

well yes, but not often. that however, is another reason why that particular stunt was very stupid. if anywhere sheep had been walking on the road, it would have been in the area i was driving. my major problem was that the road was only just over 1 car wide with gravel on either side, so if i had had to take any kind of evasive action it would have ended very very badly. and if a nasty corner had come up, i would have been fucked as well cause i wouldn't have been able to see it until it would have been too late.
i always wanted to be a paramedic - the sole reason being was so i could legally drive fast! i was gutted when i found out you actually have to be pretty qualified to do it.....

This may differ state to state, but I've been told that paramedics are NOT allowed to exceed the speed limit. The ambulances I've seen "in action" don't go more than 5-10 mph over the limit. Having people get out of your way when the lights and siren are going is pretty cool, though.
